The Ashes (Australia tour of England)

Who will take the urn in the 2019 Ashes?

The Hicks XII vs Haddin XII ruined the chances of Burns and Patterson, Head probably still got the knod because of him being one of the Vice Captains . Bancroft has to play the first game opening with Warner, the rest will probably slot in their natural positions. However, I want atleast one game where Paine bats 6, Pattinson, Cummins, Starc, Lyon, Hazlewood make the tail. That bowling unit has all been supposed to play for a few years now. This is the perfect time to release it to a below-par/par England batting lineup .

Okay so I've been thinking...

1. :eng: :bat: Dom Sibley - He's the form opener in county cricket and can't possibly do worse than Burns.

2. :eng: :bat: Joe Root - One of very few recent England openers to be non-terrible, plus it's where the team needs solidity most.

3. :eng: :ar: Joe Denly - Looked good twice in the Ireland game and hasn't really done anything drop-worthy. Possibly usable partnership-breaking pies.

4. :eng: :bat: Dawid Malan - In excellent form, and a proud owner of an Ashes ton. Prepared to grind out a long innings.

5. :eng: :wkb: Jos Buttler :c: - A change of captain? Well yes, if I'm going full 1990s England I must. Also, he's an excellent leader, has been for years.

6. :eng: :ar: Ben Stokes - Yeah, you really can't not pick him. He's crucial to this side, and has a bit of fight about him when the team needs it.

7. :eng: :wk: Ben Foakes - I've controversially picked the best keeper in England to keep wicket. No place for Bairstow here.

8. :eng: :ar: Chris Woakes - He's so good at home; absolutely has to stay in the side until at least Lord's.

9. :eng: :bwl: Stuart Broad - I'm not a huge fan but his record speaks for itself. He's also fit, firing and clocking 89 mph.

10. :eng: :bwl: Jimmy Anderson - England's best bowler, absolutely not allowed to retire before Tim Murtagh.

11. :eng: :bwl: Matt Parkinson - He's the best spinner in England and I love watching him.

Reserves:
  • :eng: :bat: Jason Roy
  • :eng: :ar: Sam Curran
  • :eng: :ar: Moeen Ali
  • :eng: :bwl: Ollie Stone
  • :eng: :bwl: Jofra Archer

I think Balance deserves a comeback. He's been good in county cricket. I seriously don't want Moeen even in the squad. Instead they should go for someone like Jack Leach or even Dom Bess.

Ballance went back to county cricket with instructions to work on hit technique and didn't. Moeen actually has a very respectable record in Tests at home, and is in purely for his bowling which is definitely better than Bess (hell, I'm better than Bess) and probably better than Leach who looked like cannon fodder at Lord's

I'd still have Bairstow ahead of Buttler

I'd still have Bairstow ahead of Buttler
How?! He's offered nothing in Tests aith the bat for years, is a substantially worse keeper than either Buttler or Foakes, and has a disproportionate amount of power in the dressing room that allows him to ddmand the gloves and his favourite batting position. It's embarrassing

I think this is how they'll shape up:

1 Burns (I'd give Sibley a chance - but I think if he was going to get one he'd have played v Ireland.)
2 Roy (he played well at 3 and looks hopeless against the moving ball but they've obviously made the decision he is the man they want to open)
3 Denly (he's only played three matches and only two of them at 3 so he probably deserves a better crack at it)
4 Root (he should bat at 3 but doesn't want to)
5 Stokes
6 Buttler (he came in as a specialist number 7 but god knows where he'll bat)
7 Bairstow
8 Ali (because they'd rather have the potential he might score something and at number 8, an average of 20 in the last two years isn't bad)
9 Broad
10 Archer
11 Anderson

I'd give Foakes a chance (he's one of three English players to average above 40 in the last two years - only a ten innings... but still), either as keeper or a specialist batsman. Bairstow averages less than 30 in the last two years but it doesn't seem like they'll drop him for some reason.

I'd like to see Woakes play but I think they'll want the pace of Archer. Unless they go Ali at 7 and Woakes at 8 and put Stokes in at 3 at the expense of Denly. They need a long batting line up because they top order is so vulnerable.

Yeah, yours is probably a realistic line-up. Although I reckon they'll pick Woakes ahead of Archer for the first couple of Tests with Archer coming in for the last three

I think they'll want to fight fire with fire and have that extra pace. It's an interesting headache. Given Anderson is a shoe-in, they have the four bowlers from the Ireland game plus Archer fitting into two spots, three if they had a particular suitable pitch and were willing to rely on Denly and Root as spin options or drop a batsman.

On paper, it looks like it could be the closest Ashes since 2005.

I think Archer should be in the playjng XI. He could turn out to be an impact player. I would have him in place of Moin/Woakes depending on the nature of the pitch.

Top 3 looks way to shaky to be facing the Aussies.Would have liked to have seen Sibley opening instead of Burns, push Root up to number 3 and replace Denly with Foakes.
1.Sibley
2.Roy
3.Root
4.Bairstow
5.Stokes
6.Butter
7.Foakes
8.Ali
9.Woakes
10.Broad
11.Archer.....if Anderson isn't fit.

I think he's been quite reliable, actually. Although probably i wouldn't keep him at Buttler's expense. Probably sacrifice Foakes.

This seems the best possible England XI to me (among the realistic options, because Cook is still the best opener in the country)

Burns (still too early to get rid of him)
Sibley/Hain
Denly
Root
Bairstow
Stokes
Buttler
Woakes
Archer
Broad
Anderson

Denly will be the only spin option, but it's a sacrifice worth making for Archer, imo. This allows Stokes to focus a bit more on batting.

Hain could be a good option for the one day team in the future (he averages almost 60 in list a) but he's a middle order batsman in first class and his record isn't nearly as strong, although he's averaging 51 this year.

Foakes batted at 3 for the Lions, so it's not impossible they see him as the next best option to fill that gap.
