The Australian Football code battle AFL/NRL/Soccer

Clearly VICTORIANS! like AFL better, its a different culture. NRL crowds arent higher but their TV ratings are in New South Wales and Queensland

Yeah but no one in Victoria likes Rugby League and allot of people in NSW like AFL.

Allot more people in NSW like AFL more then people in Victoria like Rugby League.

I've met TONS of people in NSW who love AFL and I lived in Victoria for 13 years and never met one person who played or liked Rugby League.

I assure you AFL isnt number 1 in New SOuth Wales... i wouldnt even be number 2

Rugby League is a much more popular game worldwide due to its physical contact. Even NFL players think Rugby League players are crazy :p

This is Australia not worldwide.

NFL coaches have tried to recruit AFL players in the past like Wayne Carey & Sav Rocca.

To be a punter.... Rugby League players actually play on the offense (Willie Mason trialled with New York Giants and turned it down) and defense (Colin Scott)

How long have you lived in Sydney for?

I'm trying to say Rugby League in Victoria has only got more popular the last 2 years since Melbourne have been the best team in the comp.

No it hasn't.

But your technically right as membership has gone up from last year to this year,

I dont think people up north comprihend that Rugby basically does not exist in Victoria! If it wasn't for the Melbourne Storm i doubt 80% of people wouldnt even know what the hell Rugby was!

Now on the other hand, i have travelled alot to Sydney due to my dads work. And AFL is getting more attention gradually. 10 years ago when i was in Sydney for a month i didnt here jack all about the games down here. Last year when i was in Sydney for half a month AFL stories were in the news, i saw some stores selling alot of Sydney Swans merchandise and pretty big crowd numbers. Not to mention alot more games on free to air telly, compared to no NRL games down here (well theres like one if you count 3am in the morning)

Also AFL has to pull bigger Television viewers. NRL basically only has Channel 9 competing against Foxtel for the rights. Where as its like a massacre between all free to air stations and Foxtel to have the rights each year for the AFL.

I know because there is always full houses at melbourne home games and the massive parade when they came back after winning the final.

No it isn't, Australia is the only country in the world in which it is more popular than its sister code, union. England is the only other country that it's even popular in.

Every other rugby country doesn't care for it. South Africa and New Zealand love Union but don't care about League. What does that say to you?

Rugby League is slowly dying. It will be dead in Australia in about 50 years' time. Soccer will overtake it and the AFL will stretch its lead. It's not even a matter of which sport is better, I don't mind soccer by itself but in comparison I realise that it is a boring sport compared with AFL and even rugby (union, not league).

Australia is great that it likes so many sports, but not all are sustainable at the moment. With the AFL growing rapidly in both NSW and QLD, and NRL making absolutely no ground in WA and SA, not to mention VIC which it has very little growth in despite a premiership winning team there, plus soccer growing nationwide, the NRL will really struggle.

And @ FB, as for full houses in Melbourne, a full house at the hole that is Olympic Park is about 10,000. Attendances there are pathetic compared to other sports. Their finals can't even get decent crowds. Meanwhile the parade wasn't even really mentioned in our news, so massive is obviously the footage they showed you on TV, which would be one stage of the parade. I can tell you that it wasn't major at all.

I don't know anyone who follows the NRL closely. I know a few people who kind of like it, but know little about it (less than me and I hate it).
