I think what Sohum is saying that traditionally, the rivalry is bigger between India and Pakistan and England and Australia.

But in terms of competitiveness, India-Australia all the way.

That is indeed what I am saying. In fact, anyone who read my post should have understood that because this is almost exactly the same wording I used.

India vs Sri Lanka is pretty big in my opinion you have the kings of spin at the moment in Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis versing people like Surav Ganguly from India, great stuff.

To be fair, I haven't seen a single Australian fan who claims to have a bigger rivalry with India than England. Perhaps, it's just wishful thinking on India's part...

Exactly right. We just simply dont care about India. If Australia lose the upcoming series in India, you will not hear any critics or news people having a go at the team. (which there will be hardly any free to air coverage of, maybe a 1 mintute summary in the news)

Where as when we lose/win the Ashes, its all over the news like its world war 3 or something.

England Versus West Indies, is that a big rivalry at the moment you think?

Even if Australia win the next 10 Ashes series by a margin of 5-0 each time, and if every single test match of every single Australia-India series went down to a nail-biting last-wicket finish, with every series decided on the last day of the last test, the Ashes will still be more special. You can't rewrite 100-odd years of history.

I agree that Ashes is legend but I say currently the fans may like the barmy army but the players prefer the Indian

Right. This is why the last India-Australia series featured almost no media coverage, right? Most Australian fans didn't give a hoot about the whole Symonds-Harbhajan fiasco either, I think. Wonder how that thread got so long at PC.

What's so special about a dead rivalry. If that were indeed to happen, I doubt many people would watch The Ashes, since the result would be pre-decided. I'm sure all the English would be tired of getting insulted by the Aussies as well.

Well, it happened in the 1990s, didn't it? :D But we never gave up, and always attended in numbers to support the three lions, even if we knew the result would be a foregone conclusion. Every series was anticipated with a naive sense of optimism, even though we knew we would be steamrolled. 'We've got 2 dollars, to the pound!'. Terrific.

Besides, we're used to being called every name under the sun by the Aussies.....pasty-faced, shower-dodging, etc, etc.

No, it will forever be Australia and England from a fans perspective. I dont think Indians understand that the general Australian cricket fan doesnt give a damn about India.

Plus England and Australia is a rivalry of sportsmanship, take the 2005 ashes for example.

Its just like India and Pakistan where the animosity makes the rivalry more intense. Whats a good rivalry? When two teams fight it out tooth 'n neck. Has England been fighting like that with Australia (barring the 2005 Ashes which they won the battle)?

Australia v South Africa is amazing to watch. Same with Australia v India.

They are the two biggest today I think.
