Lancashire Lightning Vs Glamorgan Dragons
Not a bad bowling performance to kick start our one day capaign here, my main aim was to keep them under 5 and over which was achieved, the second aim was to get them all out which, unfortunately wasnt. Oh well, you cant have it all. Another great performance by Murali who skittled the Glamorgan middle order single handedly saw us through, the rest of the bowlers werent lethal enough with the ball though and didnt take wickets, Chapple, Cork and Flintoff claimed one a piece while Jimmys bad start to the season continued as he came out wicketless. We have a good chance of chasing the total down, i was looking to keep them under 200 if we didnt bowl them out and they only passed that mark with a singular boundary in the last over so we did well in that respect. It is very getable with the talent in our batting order but wickets in hand is the main thing.
Corky was the first to strike in his first over after the bowling change, Sourav Ganguly, the Indian captain and former Lancashire player was the batsman on the recieving end, he started promisingly and scored at a decent rate but a cracking ball got the better of him in the end, Dom got one to nip back in when it pitched on off stump, completely done by the seam movement Ganguly went for the square cut and was made to look like a fool. A good time to strike as both openers were getting comfy.
Freddie didnt make an impact in his first little spell really, i only bowled him for four overs, then i introduced Murali who bowled in tandem with Corky for a few overs, he really made an impact, his first wicket was that of Thomas who was scoring at nearly a run a ball, Murlai changed his line from over the wicket and the subtle change really disorintated the batsman, the ball was flatter and didnt spin, it was a good delivery and deserved a wicket, so far all of the batsmen had gotten starts but couldnt build upon them.
Elliot fell in Murali's next over after passing his half century, a good little knock from him, he played some wonderful shots, some that went for boundaries and some that didnt quite get there, he manouvered the ball around well from the seamers but seemed to struggle againt the Off Spin. An almost identical delivery to the one that got Thomas the previous over, it didnt turn and was very flat and fast, it was on to him in a hurry and he panicked, this was the first ball of the over so Murali had another 5 balls at the new batsman to unsettle him.
It turned out that he only needed two of those five. Just when we needed a quick spell of wickets the magician pulled the rabbit out of the hat. Powell tried to clip him to the leg side but the ball took a leading edge after it spunmore than expected and Stuey Law took a simple catch to pull the roses back into the match, it was easy to see why this man is such an influence, not just on the plyers but on me, he really instilled confidence that you could call on him and he would get you a wicket, thats the sort of player you need in the squad and i hope to bring in a few more of those when the season ends.
By this time all the major seamers had, had one spell and we were going back round again, Jimmy didnt really bowl that well so i decided that to put some more pressure on the batters i would bring Glenn mack into the attack and bowl Murali through because he was going so well. The bowling changes seemed to be confusing the batsmen because Chapps grabbed a wicket in the first ball of his new spell, pitching outside off stump and nipping back in, Crofty was caught in the crease and missed the ball, it struck him in front and the finger went up, he will be dissapointed in himself but who cares, we had got another wicket.
Matthew Maynard started slowly but realised that he was running out of partners, he decided to target Murali which was a bad idea considering his form. The first ball of his 9th over was smacked hard into the legside by the right hander, the spectators were all looking to the boundary expecting to see the ball cross it sometime soon, they werent expecting to see Murali jumping for joy and Stuey Law with the ball in his hand! After viewing the replay i can confirm that it got stuck under his arm after he crouched away from it but at the time i thought it was one hell of catch!
Once again Andrew Flintoff is never left out, although, he didnt do as well as i was expecting, i set him a target of three wickets from the overs that he bowled. He turned out to be the most expensive out of all the bowlers and also bowled one less than the seamers, it was him and Bradley Hodge bowling the last three over, Hodgey but in a good maiden over in the crucial 44th, he beat the bat three times and was whiskers away from the stumps once. The wicket that he did claim came in the 43rd, he had Wallace LBW after a ball similair to the one that got Corky his wicket, only this time it hit the pads and not the stumps, the umpire had an easy job...
Once again, a decent performance overall with the expection of one or two overs that went for big runs, we did the job, kept them to under 5 an over and have given ourselves a chance, i would back us to chase this target comfortably but i dont want to jinx it, a 100% record would be nice but like i said before, you cant have eveything, i will be happy if we turn in a good performance, even if we lose, we have to give 110% each time we go out if we are to win this league and get promotion from the County Championship, i think we have the capabilities to do both...
