Story The Origin Of Test Cricket:IvoBligh's XI in Australia;1882-83;3rd Test; Two innings in one day!!!

Australia continue their plan into Day Three.Bannerman and Massie are watchful but are also quick to pounce on anything short. The first wicket stand is worth 38 before Massie goes, caught and bowled by Bates.
Murdoch goes back the next over, caught behind by Pilling off Midwinter.Australia are two down for 39.

Horans bad luck continues as he is out leg before to Midwinter.

There is lapse of concentration from Bannerman and he is smartly caught by Selby off a pull shot that goes into air.Thats totally irresponsible in he last over before lunch.Pretty much like Horan which cost Australia the last test.

At lunch Asutralia are 66/4 off 22 overs.Mcdonnell with 9 off 33 balls.Giffen yet to score on the other end.Australia will be hoping Giffen sticks around with Mcdonnell.
English bowlers have mantained tight line and lenght but Aussies have kept them at bay with some spectacular stonewalling.

Score moves onto 91 before Giffen falls Caught and Bowled to Ulyett.
Blackham's mixed luck with bat at top level continues as he goes only for a duck, caught by Shaw off Emmett.

Mcdonnell gets to his fifty off 106 balls. He has scored runs all around the ground. He hasn't been afraid to despatch the bad ball to the fence.

At tea, Australia have moved onto 153/6.Mcdonnell is in there with a well compiled 57 off 120.Keeping him company and English at bay is Jones with 28 off 46 balls.83 runs to get.The two batsmen have added 61 runs and there is a glimmer of hope.England have only four wickets to take.Once this partnership is breached, nothing much is expected from the tail. This one is going to wire as well.

Mcdonnell is batting well at the moment. Australia can score a reasonable total if this partnership goes on. Nice story :)

Mcdonnell is batting well and as GK said, Australia can get a good core if this partnership goes on.

Great presenation!

Great work mate, this story is one of the best at the moment for your sheer determination and very neat presentation.

Hopefully England can get a few more wickets

Jones reaches his fifty off just 69 balls with 10 hits to the fence.Great batting and great partnership.Australia in the drivers seat.

Score is 195 when disaster strikes.Jones plays off the back foot and sets for a run. There is a moment of hesitation as fielders converge on the ball.Jones sacrifices his wicket by running to the danger end. Before he leaves, he however pats Mcdonnell to go on.

Garrett and Mcdonnell then combine to move the score to 217 before Garrett heads back to the pavillion.Another hesitation and a runout.Australia still need 22 more to win with two wickets remaining.

Mcdonnell reahces a well made 100.A great innings under great pressure .It has taken him 196 balls.:hpraise

More drama as Palmer's hook shot lands in the waiting hands of Emmett.Just two runs to get.Can it be a case of yet so near and yet so far?

With tension mounting, Shaw brings the fielders close in to the batsmen.Unfazed, Mcdonnell launches the ball in the air.Luckily, the fielder overruns the ball and Australia win by a wicket.

Yeah, that century remained really as the main key for this victory. Great game of cricket like this great story :)

Fourth Test match

Australia v England 1881-82

Played at MELBOURNE, Friday, Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, March 10, 11, 13, 14, 1882. Drawn. Bonnor and Jones were the two men left out of the Colonists' team while Spofforth occupied a place in the eleven, but, as the bowling analysis will show, 'the Demon' was the least effective of all the trundlers in the match. 843 runs were scored for the loss of 22 wickets. The hitting was very severe all round, but particularly in the second innings of the Englishmen, when 220 runs were scored from the bat off 98 overs.

Shaw won the toss and his team went in first, remaining at the wickets all day, and losing 8 wickets for 282 runs. The feature of the innings, and of the match, was the grand batting of Ulyett, who went in first and was ninth out, having made 149 out of 239, without giving a chance until he had scored 132, and that was his only mistake. Up to the close of the season of 1882 Ulyett has not exceeded that score in a First-class match, and it is the highest innings yet made by an Englishman against Spofforth's bowling. Ulyett followed up his splendid performance by scoring 64 in brilliant style in the second innings, and he was backed up by Barlow, Selby, and Bates, who all played first-class cricket. Murdoch exhibited his best form while scoring his 85, and McDonnell batted in dashing style for his 52.

When stumps were finally drawn, and with them the match, the Englishmen had a great advantage, as they were 243 runs ahead with 8 wickets to fall.
