Qualifying for the 2008 Under-19 World Cup gets underway this week, with several teams in each of the ICC's five regions battling it out to join the ten full members and hosts Malaysia.

The winner of each regional tournament qualifies for the World Cup, except if Malaysia win the Asian tournament, in which case the Asian runners-up qualify.

PNG look like the best team by far out there. I don't like sub-100 scores in cricket.

EAP Qualifying Day Three Results

Vanuatu innings: 115/9
PNG innings: 118/2

PNG win by 8 wickets

Fiji innings: 440/8 (Rika 257) - yes you read that right, two hundred and fifty seven!
Japan innings: 53 all out (Biauniceva 6/13)

Fiji win by 387 runs

Fiji goes from a total of 164 combined in both matches and then crack 440? Wow!

About 2.7 times their totals in two matches combined in one innings? Lol!

A player scores 257 in a one-day game and it gets no comments? Oh well...

Anyway....

EAP Qualifying - Play offs results

3rd place play off

Japan innings: 35 all out (Tavo 4/12 Yabaki 4/4)
Fiji innings: 41/0

Final

Papua New Guinea: 207 all out (Ura 74, Dunn 4/53)
Vanuatu: 103 all out (Nou 4/22)

PNG win by 104 runs

Papua New Guinea qualify for the Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia in 2008.

Obviously you all see scores of 257 in one-day games all the time so it's nothing to get excited about, but I'll continue with coverage of the qualifiers anyway.

Europe Qualifiers Day One Results

Netherlands innings: 123 all out
Ireland innings: 126/2

Ireland win by 8 wickets

Scotland innings: 255 all out (Dalgleish 68)
Denmark innings: 110 all out

Scotland win by 145 runs

Stunning performances by Rika, by the looks of the scores. Andrew as you know of these players a lot better than I; Is he genuinely a very good player, better than you would "expect" from an associate side or was it just a bit of a one off?

Really sad preformance by the Netherlands. "Mr. Extra" was the topscorer of the innings. I think the team relies to heavy on Alexei Kervezee: if he fails, so will the whole team. Impressed with the resistance by Stijn Allema though, who's a very talented batsman and a tidy wicketkeeper. And some good bowling showed by T. Gruijters.
The chances of qualifying for the WC are small now we've lost Ireland.
I know a lot of these guys quite well as I used to play with that same team in the Netherlands U15 so I wish them luck and hope they'll preform well.

He was playing for Fiji Under-19s at the age of 13 and the senior side at 18, so he must be pretty good! Japan have been pretty poor in this tournament though, so I guess he took the chance to cash in.

Christ! So he sounds like he's going to be a very good player. I wonder if we'll see him try to move abroad for First class cricket in England, Australia, South Africa or someone in the upcoming years.

A good youth record sometimes doesn't translate to senior success though. IN 2005, Greg Thompson played for Ireland Under 17s, Under 19s, Under 23s and the senior side, all while just 17, but two years later can't even make the Ireland A team.

Oh yeah. It's always a likely story that he might no succeed later on in his years, but still, I would have thought a county with an eye about across the world would take a look at him.
