Warne-Muralidaran Trophy (Australia in Sri Lanka) Aug-Sep 2011

Been awhile since I've been able to say this but I really wanted us to bat first to see what our batters can do. Not the case so kinda of want SL to be a competitive total but then there is the flip side of wanting our bowlers to do well.

Our bowlers have done well or at least the seamers have. They've had no luck though. I'd like to see the Aussies chase a decent score to see where they are if they have to move along against spin.

Sent in on a sweaty pitch and they manage to bat their best. The ball moved around a lot, but the batsmen mostly missed the good ones completely, while the best chances were safely away from fielders. The pitch should only get better to bat on, but they've virtually negated their disadvantage by hanging on.

I get a feeling that these two guys will score 200 partnership.. I know its still far, but they are timing every ball to perfection

Will definitely be getting one today unless SL do a spectacular collapse. Feels like we bowled Johnson too early, he should now be a middle overs specialist. Bollinger has been a standout, given this is the sort of pitch we will get in the Test series, it's a shame he's been sent home. In hindsight Hastings for Smith with Johnson at 7 would have been worth a go on this pitch.

Tharanga gets a century and the Lankan line up is already looking far more comfortable today than they did in the earlier games.

hmm...249 in 45....a score of 290 is achievable....and if Mahela can produce a small blitz....a 300-310 is also possible...Best thing to do for Australia to restrict them is, remove these 2 and see how it goes from there.

Just bending in to the leftie for Johnson, this a bit more like the world cup group games where the batsmen would open comfortably but become subdued at the death.

----------

That is the most ridiculous shot I've ever seen.

----------

Next one, much more conventional, far less effective.

A dozen short or half a dozen too many? Ladies and gentlemen, we have what might be considered by future generations after careful deliberations to be a "game".

This one seems to be shaping up nicely. with australia 72/3 after just 16 overs, it could go either way.

There's a reputation for Sri Lanka being a bad place to bowl fast, but I don't think it is well earned. There are belters, sure, but there are lots of games where there seems to be something there for bowlers.

Ye of all the 4 sub-continent countries you find more pacer friendly tracks in SRI compared to IND, PAK, BANG.

I had a feeling our weakness against spin was being masked. Although it seems to be the guys batting at 6 and 7 more so than the top 5.

Haddin's time looks to be up and Smith needs to go back to the domestic scene and Dussey is probably done with too.

Didn't stay up and watch it, but it looks like we were never really in the chase. Even the 2 bigger parterships (Hussey/Clarke) and then Hussey/Smith, weren't scoring quick enough to get there.

Will be interesting to see how Dave Hussey gets treated, because he's not young and probably won't be around in 2015. And the only edge he has over a Ferguson is that he can bowl a little bit. I'd give him the rest of the series to give him a chance to respond, but I wouldn't be crying too much to lose him.

And yeah, Haddin seems lost of late. Will be interesting to see how he goes in the Tests, to see if he's playing OK, but just struggling with the ODI openers role.
