Agree on that India has not exactly the best image as a tourist hotspot. However there are some parts like Kerala, the North-east etc which can be a cheap but interesting options. In fact, Kerala was featured among National Geographic's top 100 destinations in the World.eh, the word "holiday" and "India" just don't fit togethor I'm afraid, especially from a Westerners point of view.
I've been there. Loved the food, people and the change of culture, but apart from that i hated everything else. Humidity, rubbish, poverty and the chaos of people just really turned me off.

As to NZ, I must confess it were the movies that drew me in, particularly Lord of the Rings. I have browsed some sites and found it interesting. And given my state of finances, a trip to NZ can be safely ruled out atleast for the next 4-5 years, unless I hit a jackpot or marry a rich girl.
