For the first time, not only will the Champions of England and Australia have to beat one another to take the Championship, but they will also have to overcome the best that the Emerald Isle has to offer.

Team News

Yorkshire

Twelve months ago, Yorkshire had their first opportunity to become the World Champions of Cricket, but they fell, agonizingly, one wicket short of victory over New South Wales. Now, they look to overcome not one but two opponents on their way to a first world title. Wilfred Rhodes, Lord Hawke, et al will all be looking to prove themselves to be the best team not just in England but the world.

Victoria

Like Yorkshire, Victoria will be looking to take their second chance to become World Champions after being runners up the first time. There has been some transition to the team which couldn't stop Surrey, but for the most part it has only got stronger. Despite New South Wales managing to defeat Yorkshire last time out, few would have dared argue that Victoria were not the best team in Australia at the time.

Ireland

The Irish team which tours England this year is no pushover. Blessed with players of the calibre of Tim O'Brien and Lucius Gwynn, this is not a weak team. However, Victoria and Yorkshire will not by Gwynn's only opponents: the young all-rounder is also battling health problems which, if rumours are to be believed, threaten to end not only his career, but also his life. This would be a fitting way for him to leave the game.

Context
Yorkshire are well on their way to building a dynasty in the County Championship. However, Victoria had a disappointing Shield campaign this winter, with New South Wales building on their World Championship to take a clean sweep of their domestic competition. They will be back next year.

Watch out for
The two big teams contain all manner of star names, but WG Grace himself thinks Lucius Gwynn to be the match of any of them.

Prediction
Yorkshire will be looking to right the wrongs of twelve months ago, but won't have an easy time of it.​
