Australia comes out to response on the 2005 Ashes Video

Botham calls for urn to stay

Sir Richard Branson may not know much about cricket, but his campaign to leave the Ashes urn in Australia at the end of this series has drawn support from two former Ashes captains.

Branson reignited the debate over the 124-year-old artefact yesterday with a press conference in Sydney. Flanked by Allan Border and Ian Botham, he insisted: "Australia should keep the Ashes until we can win them back again. As chairman of the airline that actually sponsored bringing the Ashes down here, I feel uncomfortable about the idea of flying them back to England."

The Ashes urn has spent the past two months on a busy tour of Australia, visiting museums around the country. Botham and Border both argued that it means too much to the players for it to go back and be locked up in the Lord's museum by its owners, the Marylebone Cricket Club, for the rest of its life.

"To see the Ashes urn put down in the MCG or SCG, what a moment that would be for Australia," Botham said. "And it would be the same for England the next time they win it back.

"In this day and age, I don't believe the urn is too fragile to travel," he added. "It's here now and it's been around Australia."

Australian Prime Minister John Howard joined the campaign, promising that if the MCC agreed to Branson's proposal he would help find a home where the urn could be kept safe ? probably at Cricket Australia's offices in Melbourne.

"I know there is a lot of tradition surrounding where it has been in the past," Howard said, "but I don't think there is any valid reason why it shouldn't follow the outcome of the series."

Most unexpectedly, Branson's proposal found favour with the Wisden Almanack, a publication that dates back even further than the Ashes contest itself. "It would be incredibly powerful if you not only had the urn wherever the Ashes happened to belong at the time but there was also an empty plinth wherever they weren't, whether in Lord's or Sydney or Melbourne," said Wisden editor Matthew Engel.

The MCC remained unmoved, however, reiterating that the urn is not a trophy and never has been. A spokesman said it would have to be carefully examined for any damage upon its return to England.

Australia Cricket is giving the members of Planetcricket to decide wether the Urn stays in Australia until England can win them back, or if they go back to England and not ruin a 125 year histort. What are your thoughts?

Ofcourse , The Urn should stay in Australia :) . We hve won it back . we desreved it ,more than anybody . :cheers

i guess who ever win it, they shd get it... after all, it comes only once in two yrs!

Teams announced for the 2nd Final of the Commonwealth Bank Series

Australia:

1. A. Gilchrist
2. M/ Hayden
3. R. Ponting
4. M. Clarke
5. A. Symonds
6. M. Hussey
7. J. Maher
8. B. Hogg
9. B. Lee
10. S. Clark
11. G. McGrath

Australia have gone into this match with a 1-0 lead of the Poms, and if they win this match, then the Series is there's, but if England win, they will need to play the 3rd and Final match to determin at winner.
Australia have gone with their usual team, their team has not changed throughout the series, everyone has played all games. No changes what so ever, the danger for England is their hitting power. With Gilchrist and Hayden the 2 openers, that will be a patnership they will need to break up quick, but as soon as they do that, they have the likes of Ponting, Clarke, Hussey and Symonds to contend with. Australaia have gone with a good side according to me.

England

1. P. Collingwood
2. K. Pietersen
3. M. Vaughan
4. A. Strauss
5. I. Bell
6. A. Flintoff
7. G. Jones
8. A. Giles
9. M. Hoggard
10. S. Harmison
11. J. Anderson

Same as Australia, this has been their team for most of the Series, not many changes at all. Its the same team, but they have been switched around alot for this up-coming match. Dont know why that is, trying to get Australia to think that Strauss will be opening but they see that Collingwood and Pietersen wil be the openers. Either that or trying to get players like Pietersen and Collingwood in form for the Ashes.
Kevin Pietersen and Collingwood need a 100+ partnership first up if England are with any chance.

Both Team look Well balanced , It will be an even match . Go Aussie . :cheers

Australia vs England - 2nd Match of the Final of the Commonwealth Bank Series @ Sydney

Match Summary: If Australia win, then they will win the Commonwealth Bank tropy, because they have already beaten England in the 1st final. But if England win then we will have to play another match and see who the winner is from the 3rd Final

England have won the toss and elected to bat

I guess Aussies will win at ease becos of the great confidence level :)

England come out of the blocks early.
(After 20 overs)

England have chosen to bat 1st against Australia on a dusty pitch. Alot of bounce onto the batsmans bat is the trick that is working for the Poms at the moment.
England went with a different looking side, they are the same players, just different positions with Collingwood and Pietersen opening the batting instead of someone like Strauss and Vaughan. It was a good start for England, great running between the wickets from Collingwood and Pietersen were crucial. Pietersen really made the most of the field restrictions during the power play, hitting 4 fours to the boundary. Collingwood wasnt as effective but did play well being the singles man of the pair.
Glenn McGrath was bowling superb for the Australias with 2 maidens of 8 overs, 38 runs conceeded and now picked up the wicket of Paul Collingwood, Collingwood making 20 runs in the 1st stage of the match, being bowled by McGrath and caught by Hussey at mid wicket.
Michael Vaughan was at number 3, and Vaughan and Pietersen are continueing for England with Pietersen on 41 and Vaughan on 28.

KP is playing well . He is the only one who will create the difference in this match . Nice presentation mate and good start by England.

England look settle with 10 overs reamaining

England have posted a good score at this stage of the match. With 10 overs reamaining, Andrew Strauss and Ashely Giles are at the crease for England, with Strauss on 32 and Giles just coming in for Jones on 8. The Wickets have fallen with alot of the England players not making a big enough score to really look England dangerous, but with Strauss at the crease with 10 overs reamaning, who knows what will happen.
Kevin Pietersen really made the oppourtunity of batting 1st again, making another big score of 54 would of really hoped he could of builded on that to secure a score in the 80's or so. Captain Michael Vaughan also played well for his 40. Pietersen faced 70 balls, and hit 8 boundaries in his innings for 54.
Andrew Strauss still at the crease for the reamainding overs has faced 39 balls, 7 boundaries for a total of 32.
The game looks evenly balanced at the moment.

Andrew Strauss and Kevin Pietersen have set up England for a good total

A. Flintoff: c&b - b. Hogg - 14
G. Jones: lbw - b. White - 12

B. Hogg: 69 - 3
A. Symonds: 17 - 1

England is doing well especially Strauss seems to be settled and cud be danger in last 10 Overs.. if Aussies restrict England below 250, they have great chance of winning this!
