Lust. Lust for stats.

Dhoni aside (who had captaincy and keeping) as subordinate roles I cannot remember a middle order batsman from India bar Yuvraj Singh who has been revered. Even Yuvi had a second wing.

We just want hundreds, averages. Guys like Raina, Jadeja (Ajay), Dravid were mostly treated like hot cups of tea and coffee in the white ball game. When it was cold and the going was tough and they did their job, it was just that- their job.

Look at this discussion board itself. Jadeja and Bumrah are not even a discussion for the leadership role. How do we know how good they are? Our perspective as a country only is not balanced. Cricket is a small aspect of it.

For us, bowlers are the farmers, those that can do a bit of both are traders and the batters are bureaucrats who can have the fattest salaries for sitting in the comfiest of chairs all year.

On what basis does Rohit get the test job ahead of at least 4 other chaps I can name? FFS, Rahane won us a god damn test series down under with a second/third wing team against an Aussie side at full pelt. Unbelievable.
I agree. But we have to see the other side of it too. Bowlers are prone to injuries. Chances are higher than that of batsmen. And for a longer run, it's important for a captain to be fit. If the bowlers can do that, then why not? :)

For an instance, I don't know if Rohit has done enough in the past to be considered as a regular player in the Test side. Let alone be the Vice-Captain!!! I think BCCI and the selectors rather want to prove that they are open to Rohit leading the side but Kohli was a better choice and hence they came up with a brainless decision like such! Rahane should be the Captain of this damn side in the longer format, but he is not even a vice-Captain now.

Also, I do believe Ravi Jadeja can prove to be a good white-ball Captain given an opportunity.

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul have missed a fair few games on the road the last two years. Picking a bowler who needs rest will groom a young vice captain like. a Pant or Rahul in a meaningless bilateral as well. I know Dravid has become the coach but I don't know who is picking these teams but it seems like we need someone there first and foremost!!!

I don't like Ishan Kishan at open. He made 500+ runs at number 4 (except a few innings) in IPL 2020. Making him an opener makes no sense. Prithvi, Agarwal and Gaikwad can't play at 4 but Ishan can.

Who is to blame now for this shambolic side selected for this series? We don't have Kohli to thrash. You put SKY and Kishan out and you will not find an impact middle order India bat in all of the IPL. The toughest phase of batting in the IPL is taken burden by 80% foreigners. It has been exposed to the hilt in this World Cup and it's lead up!

I think it might be time to do the reverse of Sehwag and try and make KL a middle order bat with the license to hammer from ball 1.

They will have to start doing that soon, considering that almost everyone who wants to play for India in white ball cricket, wants to open the innings. The Sachin-Sehwag-Saurav effect on the youngsters... :D

I am the last person to glorify Tendulkar. In fact, I quite despise the god like status the country has bestowed on him. But, the batsmanship he had for his time was just paranormal. Nobody is replicating him till you and I are alive. What irks me is that when I speak to a Tendulkar fan, their 'justifications' are his records. For me, his batsmanship was more related to playing for a team on it's crutches in the 90's on challenging tracks and smashing the greatest bowlers ever. And by smashing, I mean smashing. The bigger contribution was the plethora of cricketers who picked up a bat hoping to be Sachin Tendulkar.

I know Venkatesh Iyer has been a finisher in the past in domestic cricket, but he is picked on the back of his success as an opener for KKR in the recent IPL.
Is that really a bad thing though? He had a great IPL and he's been picked for T20Is - the same format. Granted that the skill levels will be far tougher in an International match, but IPL can and should be a stepping stone to recruit for T20Is.

He is also a batsman who can bowl/all rounder that bowls seam. Iyer could be a massive player for India. Look how good Liam Livingstone has been for England. He's a limited overs opener but he has to fit into the side somewhere else and brings an extra skill that gives England more bowling options.

If Hardik can't bowl he's no test batsman and leaves the limited overs side without a sixth bowler. India need a back up/replacement for that.

Yeh, he bowls occasionally, but hard to tell if it's of any substance. Haven't watched him in action to be honest so can't really comment on how good or bad it is.
