Lancashire vs Yorkshire
Old Trafford

Its the battle of the Roses part 4 as Yorkshire make their second trip of the season over the pennines to take on their rivals Lancashire in this Twenty20 group game. With both teams near the top of the North Zone, a win for either of them will do them a world of good, especially Lancashire who lie in 3rd and a win would put them level on points with the two teams above them. Yorkshire could do with the win too, as it would all but confirm their progression to the next stages of the competition. Yorkshire beat Lancashire by 28 runs when the two met in the first game of the competition so may hold the advantage coming in to this one. Mark Chilton and Craig White met down on the pitch to check the conditions.

A green pitch with overcast conditions, should be some swing around for the bowlers early on so this pitch looks good to bowl on first and you would expect the captain who wins the toss to do just that. The match referee met the captains in the middle for the coin toss.

So, as expected, the winning captain Mark Chilton has put the opposition in to bat, so Yorkshire will have to post a decent score with a strong looking Lancashire team to come. The teams were announced soon after and the players made their way out onto the pitch to start the match.

Harvey And McGrath Give Yorkshire Stability
At Old Trafford

A quick fire 50 from Ian Harvey and 44 from Anthony McGrath guided Yorkshire to 146 after their 20 overs against Lancashire. After a bright start, Yorkshire tailed off in the middle of the innings, not scoring as fast with the field being spread, but on this pitch with the ball swinging about as it was doing early on, 146 is a good score. Lancashire bowled well, especially Anderson and Murali who both went at under 6 an over and both picked up the wickets that fell, with 2 going to Anderson and 1 to Murali. Harvey's 50 was the highlight of the innings, coming from only 28 deliveries, he hammered away at the start, especially against Dominic Cork who took some stick. There were also contributions from Briggs (20) and Vaughan (30*) as Yorkshire should now look to defend this total on a decent looking pitch.

From Briggs View
An exciting innings ended a little too early for Briggs likeing as he was dismissed for only 20, attempting to hit over the covers off the bowling of James Anderson. After a slow start, Briggs exploded into life hitting Cork straight back over his head for 6 and then doing the same to Anderson next over. However, some play and misses seemed to shake Briggs' confidence a little bit which resulted in the rash stroke which led to his downfall, so Briggs should now look to make up for it with the ball and lead Yorkshire to victory.

Hoggard And Briggs Complete Roses Whitewash
At Old Trafford

Matthew Hoggard and Shaun Briggs picked up 7 wickets between them to give Yorkshire a 51 run victory over there red rivals from over the pennines. Lancashire never got going after Hoggard picked up the Lancashire captain Chilton early on and were eventually bowled out for 95 in conditions which were hell for the Lancashire batsmen. Briggs and Hoggard took full advantage of the swinging conditions and use it brilliantly, and undoubtebly Briggs produced the delivery of the game to dismiss Andrew Flintoff who was un-done by an amazing delivery which came back off the pitch and bowled him through the gate. Murali top scored for Lancashire with 15, which really sums up the Lancashire innings and moves Yorkshire one step closer to advancing to the next stage.

From Briggs View
Briggs produced yet another blinding spell of bowling against Lancashire to help his side to victory. 4 for 19 from 4 of the finest overs you will see in the competition this year was the end result for Briggs who really gave it his all to try and give Yorkshire the victory. The swinging conditions helped him, especially in his 2nd over which saw Mal Loye play and miss 3 times in a row. That pressure mounted later on as Loye would eventually hit out from Briggs and his wicket, along with Flintoff, Hegg and Chapple completed a sound game for Briggs and his Yorkshire team mates.

Shaun Briggs 4-0-19-4

1st Over: WICKET! In a wild over Briggs produces the perfect delivery to get rid of Flintoff who is cleaned up by a beauty. An earlier delivery resulted in a no ball and then Loye helped himself to a boundary after Flintoff's dismissal to complete a mixed first over. 9 from the over
2nd Over: Loye plays and misses 3 times in a fine over from Briggs. 1 from the over
3rd Over: WICKET! Mal Loye becomes Briggs second victim, hitting out after the pressure of the previous over seemingly got to him. Hegg then comes in and hits a boundary of the first ball he faces. 4 from the over
4th Over: WICKETS! Perfect final over from Briggs see's him collect 2 wickets, first Hegg mis times a shot straight to Vaughan then later Chapple tries to hit one out of the ground but only succeeds in finding Vaughan who takes a comfortable catch. Anderson later hits a huge boundary down the ground. 5 from the over

Man Of The Match
mom4la.jpg

Briggs seems to have adjusted nicely to Twenty20 now, getting wickets frequently and scoring nicely too. It will be interesting to see how Briggs handles the pressure situations of knock out competition if Yorkshire proceed as his only experience of that so far was when Yorkshire lost in the first round of the C&G.

thats dumb brigs had better bowling figures thatn hoggard why did he get man of the match. he didn't even bat

:) good stuff briggsey :)

Briggs has settled well in the 20/20 version too. But I seriously doubt the sanity of the man of the match selector. That decision was RIDICULOUS!

wasnt that rediculous, he scored 30 not out, took 3 wickets and 3 catches, plus he bowled more economically then briggs, economy beats wickets in one dayers. id have picked vaughan.

vaughan? he didn't bowl mate and 30 off 32 in a 20 overs match is a bit slow :P

briggs picked up 4 wickets, and there was only 2 runs difference so that realy negates anything.

Taking wickets is more important IMO just because it slows the run rate down. You dont win by having a better economy, you win by getting more runs than the other team
