Going Public...

Well it was time I met the press. Though I have been amongst the press folk before, this was something new. A whole army of Everton fans will be listening to the one who is going to be incharge of the team they love. I was under tremendous pressure to give some sort of confidence to the fans and the team.

Donning the Everton jacket, (I hate suits!) I steped into the 1878 suite, where the conference was to begin.

To say I had kittens running around my tummy was an understatement!

Going public with the press!

"Evening folks! In case you guys do not recognize me, I am the manager of Everton Football Club now"

I could hear a few chuckles! Good!

A balding guy in a boring green suit called out!

"Congratulations Balaji! Alex Furer from SKY, news just has come in that you are after Hernan Crespo. Why?"
"Well, over the past couple of seasons there have been talks of Hernan wanting to move to a place where he is not in the bench. And all you rumour mongers out here will be knowing that Chelsea are after Adriano. So where does that leave Hernan?

All I am asking Hernan is to think. He is at the prime stage of his career. I would insist Hernan to think of considering joining Everton. We have a great heritage and Hernan can settle very well here. There are people who would look to him here. I can say Hernan will feel wanted.

We are playing Champions Cup football this time around and Hernan would be of a great asset with his European exposure. I will most certainly be speaking to the player in a couple of days."
A young man in a black suit called out

"Can you afford to bring in Crespo?"
"Indeed we can. We have atleast 35 Million to bring in some quality players!"
The same guy shot out!

"Then why Crespo? Might as well bid for Shevchenko or Henry?"
Few open laughs around...

So this git is trying to prove I am worthless, ay!

"I want players who want play for Everton football Club. Just having some quality dough in my hand doesn't necessarily mean I can run off in a wild goose chase. I will most certainly sign players who feel to wear the Everton Jersey and no one else."
"Steven McCann from ESPN, how many signings are you looking at?"
"Atleast 5. I am most certainly after a striker and a goal keeper. We are looking to add some more quality to the squad."
"Have you decided on the first team?"
"Not yet! Not yet! Will be done this week!"
"What is your promise to the fans?"
"I am not promising anything. All I ask the fans is to trust the team they love, to have faith in the people who run it and the players who give their ultimate all for the team. Thank you very much"
As I steped away from the mike, I could see a couple of old news people show me a thumbs-up!

So, that went well! I can retire for the day!

Vs the Reserves....

6th July, 2005. My first game as Manager of Everton and the firsts are pitted against the reserves. The match was scheduled at Haig Avenue, the ground for the reserves.

I preferred the traditional 4-4-2 formation with Beattie and McFadden upfront. My midfield was made up of Simon Davies, Mikel Arteta, Tim Cahill and Andy ven der Meyde.

Pistone, Weir, Ferrari and Yobo made the defensive line and Richard Wright was at goal. Weir iwore the captain's arm band for the match.

I opted to have big Dunc, Leon, Stubbs, Valente in the bench.

Alan had gone for a 5 - 2 - 1 - 2 formation with Jamie Vaughan and Lewis upfront. Hopkins was to support them as an attacking mid...

More of an Italian formation, I should say. Alan had a dirty smile when I came into the dugout before the match! Cocky guy! Maybe this match should show him something of my managerial skills! (I wonder!)

I was pretty worried on the outcome, if my assistant could get one over me! Oh well, atleast I can make a judgement on the team.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions guys! Do keep 'em flowing in!

Cheers!

Bala :)

Best of luck, BTW nice stroy so far.

Yeah come on the blues! We should easily beat the reserves, although it's never that easy with Everton.

I reckon this will be a close contest,it depends on whose worse on the day,the first team or the reserves. You're pretty lucky or maybe shrewd that you assigned this as your first game otherwise your team would have lost for sure :p Good luck with the reserves.

Nice interview. I like how you put your face on top of the Everton jacket. I think you'll just beat the reserves 2-1. Cause when you say you are going to smash an easy team it can bite you on the backside.

I really like this story. I think it deserves some reps ;).
