I reckon this will be a close contest,it depends on whose worse on the day,the first team or the reserves. You're pretty lucky or maybe shrewd that you assigned this as your first game otherwise your team would have lost for sure :p Good luck with the reserves.
Har de har har! Spoken like a true El Poole fan :P . I prefer the first friendly against the reserves as I can gauge more than 30 people of my own team.

Yeah come on the blues! We should easily beat the reserves, although it's never that easy with Everton.

Nice interview. I like how you put your face on top of the Everton jacket. I think you'll just beat the reserves 2-1. Cause when you say you are going to smash an easy team it can bite you on the backside.

I really like this story. I think it deserves some reps ;).
Nice prediction there LH. You might never know hoe true this just might be! ;)

Alan 1 - Balaji 0

Well this is the score card after todays match against the reserves! A pretty rude shock first up!

James Vaughan defied his age by scoring two goals in 2 minutes (57' , 59')

The half time score was 0 - 0 as the boys produced a game that could be called nothing but ridiculous. Though we had more shots than the reserves, most of them were way of target!

I brought in Nige, Osman, Phil Neville, Li Tie and Nuno Valente for Wright, Cahill, van der Meyde and Davies!

Alan's boys played a pretty rough game and were booked 5 times!

But it was a gross mistake from big Nige as we gifted the reserves' first goal. Vaughan beat Nuno Valente in an 1 on 1 and hit a low shot towards the goal. Martyn fumbled it and the kid smashed it in!

Two minutes later James Vaughan showed his precarious talent by weaving in and out of the defence, drawing the experienced Martyn out of the line and slotted the ball in.

I called the boys to attack more and pushed Osman forward just behind the strikers.

That paid off as Leon Osman curled in a pass from Phil Neville beating the impressive Iain Turner from about 16 yards!

As there was no chances of another goal, I pulled out McFadden and sent in Dunc with an instruction to hit the long ball!

We did get atleast 3 opportunities to score but contrived to miss 'em all and the match ended with the score 2 - 1 in favor of the reserves!

Alan had taught me a rough lesson, but that is for the good of the team. This was an absolute horror show by the team with only Arteta and Osman looking good!

16 year old Dan Ballinger was superb for the reserves.

We did play a better game overall, but never took the chances in our hand!

My first task - Get in a keeper and striker!

After the match, I called James Vaughan to my office and congratulated him over the great game, he had! The kid was a sponge and I conveyed my intent to provide him a good run with the first team.

Vaughan - A great game indeed!

He was very much excited and confirmed he is ready to prove himself amongst the best in the business.

Once that was done, I pulled out my mobile and called up the No 1 name in my wanted list - Hernan Crespo.

Embarking on the pre - season tour

I had already decided that the boys need some quality opposition to play the friendlies before we start the season. So what best place to test our strength than Italy.

We had been in discussion with the Italian Serie A clubs and agreed on a 4 match tour. Our first game was against Livorno. I was pretty keen on getting the team honed up before our season opener and it was imperative that we got our acts together, and quick!

The schedule for the pre - season friendlies...

8th July, 2005 Livorno vs Everton (Stadio Armando Picchi)
20th July, 2005 Reggina vs Everton (Oreste Granillo)
24th July, 2005 Cagliari vs Everton (Sant' Elia)
28th July, 2005 Lecce vs Everton (Via del Mare)

and we tread the grass at Goodison for the first time against Preston North End on 2nd August.

I intend to return to Goodison between the 9th and 17th as that is going to be the time I will try and sign few targets!

As we boarded the flight to Livorno, I had made it clear to the team that I needed atleast 50.% success from the tour.

Livorno would be a tough fixture as we hit the turf without much practice. But I just have one word - Bring it on!

Livorno vs Everton
8th July, 2005

It was a cool day at Livorno with a slight drizzle around. Ground was not that slippery though. A temperature of 23 degrees typified Italian conditions as I fielded the same XI that started against the reserves. I left out Duncan Ferguson out of the substitutes and drafted in James Vaughan instead.

Livorno started with an attacking 4 - 2 - 4 formation that was so unlike an Italian club. Their manager Carlo Mazzone was clearly experimenting.

The kick off started as Alan and me started to ponder over a few tactical possibilities.

Pipped by Livorno...

Well, we lost again. But this time we matched the italians shot for shot and was pipped only at the end. 3 - 2 is not a bad score line, I should say - considering the very little time we had to acclamatize and prepare.

The match started evenly with the boys showing the muscle and brain to outwit and out tackle the skilled Italian team.

We did concede first with Livorno's Brazilian forward Paulinho tricking David Weir and let rip a thunderbolt from the edge of the box for which Richard Wright could do nothing.

But we struck back 6 minutes later with Cahill heading in a beautiful cross by Mikel (Arteta). The score at half time was 1 - 1.

I brought on James Vaughan and Phil Neville on for McFadden and Davies after half time.

We took the lead deservedly in the 54th minute when Beattie scored in of a Andy (van der Meyde) pearler of a cross.

All credit to the Italians as they struck back immediatly on the hour's mark as Coco scored of a free kick just outside the box!

I brought in Nuno Valente for Alessandro Pistone in the 76th minute and he made an immediate impact by clearing two good goal bound shots.

The match was looking to end at 2 - 2 when Paulinho struck again as he score off a superb 1 - 2 with Lucarelli. Paulinho has looked very impressive and I made a mental note to keep tabs on this impressive 21 year old.

Andy, Tim, Beattie and Mikel had a good outing. Though Weir, Pistone and Wright were off the boil.

Our next match is against Reggina and we have a solid 11 days off to prepare better for the game.

I am getting back to Goodison today as I intend to complete my first signing tomorrow.

The first signing...

July 9, 2005.

I landed in Liverpool in the wee hours this morning. Being a Saturday, I wanted to get as much work done as possible as I can go out to the pub I noticed down by the Walton Lane.

As I entered my office, the clock chimed 7 AM. Katie had left few reports from the scouts on my table. These were the reports of players who were available for a free transfer. I had atleast 50 names to ponder about.

It was half past 10 as I zeroed in on my first pick - Vampeta.

vampeta10ha.jpg

Vampeta

A natural right side mid fielder who is at 31, is in the last few years of his career. A dead ball specialist and an experienced creative mid fielder, he personified what I wanted to add to my midfield to complement Arteta.

I called up the player who had been released by his hometown club Vitoria and expressed (with difficulty in my scant Portugese!) that I would like to take a look at him and asked him to be at Goodison before the 14th for discussions.

The player was naturally delighted and said he would confirm me of his plans shortly. He did sound earnest and if what I had seen of him in videos were any close to his current abilities, I would have no qualms in signing him.

I still have a busy day ahead...
