What will Balaji achieve with Everton?

At loggerheads with the LMA...

This just had to happen eh! First were the fans, then the players now the League Manager's Association. They dont want me...

It seems that the LMA have suddenly woken up from their slumber and found out that I dont have the UEFA Pro Licence that is required to manage a premiership club.

Katie asked me to watch SKY 2 in which the LMA chief John Barnwell was being interviewed.

Barnwell - Where was he all fortnight?

"They can't do it - it's as simple as that,"
said Barnwell

"My understanding is that Everton have had lengthy discussions with the Premier League over the weekend and they have been flatly refused.

Ramesh Balaji may be working towards becoming a coach but at this stage he hasn't got the necessary qualifications to do the job.

If they wanted to appoint a senior figure who did have the qualifications and who would come in and show Balaji the ropes, then that would be a different matter.

The LMA will never approve anyone without the necessary badges to manage a premiership club. Thats that!"
Sheesh! Is it "Pick on Balaji" month? Badges, smadges! I know I can manage the team. How do they know that I am not fit for the job. Its upto my employers who get to bloody decide that.

Phil Carter called me and said that he would be explaining Everton's stand to TV this evening and asked me to be present then.

In the mean time, I received one bit of good news that Standard Liege have agreed to Oguchi Onyewu's bid and a deal has been finalized. Now all that remains is a work permit to the player and he will be unveiled at Goodison by the month end.

Note:

Most of John Barnwell's comments are for real. They were on Boro appointing Gareth Southgate as their manager. Thanks to SKYSports!

The press meet...

At 7 I stepped into the lobby leading to the 1878 hall, where the meet was to happen. Sir Philip Carter joined me on the way and we were chatting on further propositions for the club.

Sir Philip has really grown on me and I have started to respect him a lot. He too has been quite appreciative of my work style so far!

We entered thr hall and Sir Phil took over immediately.

Sir Phil Carter - wants me to stay!

"John Barnwell doesn't know what it's like to take a club from liquidation to the Uefa Champions League"

"I will take the decisions that are right for Everton.

"Surely we shouldn't be denied for bureaucratic reasons, when any schoolteacher could go and get those qualifications? He should be supporting a great English football club called Everton"

"No one knows this club like I do and no one is as passionate about the club doing well as I and Balaji do. "

"Why should he [Balaji] be penalised for being remarkable. I am quite impressed by his decisions and his future plans for the club. He has brought in 4 quality players in just 15 days. And the money alone did not speak"

"Balaji obviously has not got the qualifications. But he is working diligently towards it. People are stipulating that you have to have them but for me the badges and such like are purely a money spinner."

"Look at Howard Wilkinson, he had more badges than John Wayne when he went to Sunderland but never won a game."

"Look at Vialli when he went to Chelsea, he never had any badges and won five trophies."
The press turned their attention to me.

"Well, I know I don't quite have the badges. But I know the game and I know how to deal with money.

I have attended 3 training programs for managing so far and have ranked among the best. I know, I can get those badges, but just not having them must not hinder me taking the club places! "
Who else are you looking of signing?

"I am confident of bringing some quality into the squad. Everton have struck a deal to sign Oguchi Onyewu and I can assure more quality signings will follow"

Let us see, what the LMA hits us back with!

One this way, one that way!

18th July, 2005

The LMA still haven't hit back. I was back to search for new players. I was analysing a report sent by the new scout Marek Jowcziak on goal keepers!

I had 2 players on my final short list!

1. Roberto Abbondenziari - This tall Argentine was a good pic, but he does not have age on his side.

2. Sebastian Frey - I have watched videos of him and I have made up my mind to get him in.

Frey - My pick!

I called up Mario Beretta, the Manager of Parma and tabled a bid of 5 Million for this strapping goal keeper.

Parma was keen on some dough and asked for 12 Million. After atleast 4 hours of discussion, we agreed at a transfer fee of 8 Million pounds.

I then called up Sebastian and discussed about his possible transfer. He was absolutely delighted to play for a club who could offer UEFA matches.

It was trivial issue of agreeing personal terms and I have to say, I have managed to net in the biggest fish for the season.

My targets! - 1 striker and 2 Midfielders!

At around 9 in the evening, I received a call from Danny Blind, the Manager of Ajax asking about the availability of Jamie McFadden. He said Ajax would offer 2.5 Million for him.

After careful consideration, I called up Jamie who was in Italy, to discuss this. He was open to leave for Netherlands. I then called up Blind and placed a counter bid of 7 Million pounds.

McFadden - He might play in the Eredevise next season!

Whatever, James McFadden is certain to leave us and I have to get in a new striker and fast!

Frey plays for Fiorentina
He was a Parma player and was on loan to Viola! It was in this season that he chose to sign for Fiorentina on a permanent basis (and they got dumped to Serie B). Whereas this story starts off with the 2005 - 06 season, when Frey was still a Parma player!

To Italy, Frustrated!

19th July, 2005

I am frustrated. First with the LMA, now with absolutely no headway in getting a new striker. I had my overtures turned down for 4 different strikers.

forlangd3.jpg

Diego Forlan
Bid: 7.5 Million going upto 9 Million
Result: FLOP!

I had bid 7.5 Million for Villareal's Diego Forlan and was willing to raise it up to 9 Million. But the player himself was not too keen on returning to England.

Dirk Kuyt
Result: FLOP!

I next called up Feyenoord to enquire the availability of Dirk Kuyt only to know he had just signed a contract extension.

Vincenzo Iaquinta
Bid: 6 Million going upto 7.5 Million
Counter Bid: 11 Million
Result: FLOP!

My next attempt was on Vincenzo Iaquinta for whom my bid of 6 Million was turned down flat by Udinese. They demanded 11 Million, which according to me is robbery! I said I could go upto 7.5 Million, but their stand was at a minimum of 10.5 Million. I asked them to forget about the deal and called up Ajax to check on Klaas Jan Huntelaar.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar
Result: FLOP!

Ajax were in no mood to sell him as they had only recently acquired him.

I still have no clue on whom to get to pair up front with Beattie.

One good thing though was that the Work Permit for Oguchi Onyewu was granted without any hassles. He and Sebastian Frey would join with the squad before the Italian tour ends.

We are up against Reggina tomorrow.
