Ashes 2013 - Australia tour of England June/August 2013

I would totally agree. Warner could be a Gilchrist like presence at #6 - Gilly always preferred pace, but coming in mid innings in a Test never seemed to bother him too much. Warner might be similar. And Cowan was my first choice to move down to begin with. I think he would be a reasonable middle order grinder. Like Katich was originally, and Hussey turned into.

Watson, Hughes, Khawaja/Rogers, Clarke, Cowan, Warner?? That might be the order I'd put them in. Maybe Warner higher because he's good once he's going, so you don't want to leave him with no partners. So many openers!

That is a tricky one, I guess Cowan at 6 and Warner at 4 would avoid the problem of leaving him stranded. Clarke loves the 5 spot so best to leave him there.

Cowan should be the one benched sacrificed AFAIC.

That's an interesting call seeing as he's been playing well for Notts in the LVCC.

Oh yeah, in an ideal world Cowan is not in my team. Will be happy to replace him when a middle order guy puts his hand up. Bailey, Doolan, Ferguson etc. need to do a bit better before they get a spot IMHO. Perhaps should have had Steve Smith in there instead of Cowan, I'm sure you would have loved that :D That's in part seriousness though... would have been interesting to see how Smith went on the seaming English pitches, since he showed a bit of something on the spinning decks.

With the first test being at Trent bridge I would be amazed if they didn't select Cowan.

Key point right there. Bailey has done nothing since his first innings. And the rest aren't playing FC atm so can't judge them. Only guys performing so far are yet again more openers.

Why not try out some of these openers in the middle-order? I mean, look at how Mike Hussey turned out...

Well, they tried Watson and that wasn't the great success that they needed to have.

As far as moving one of the openers permanently down the order, the best candidate would we Warner IMO, it protects him against the prodigious swing of the new-ball bowlers and adds a threat down the order so opposition teams cannot relax.

Cowan's scores are getting smaller by the innings. Probably lucky for him the selectors aren't known for dropping based on domestic form. Copeland really is making a late bid, just taken his third 5 fer in a row.

Not a good sign for Ed. I'm guessing the emphasis for tour games will be getting Clarke, Hughes, Haddin, Wade and Khawaja up to speed (guys who've had no cricket recently). They'll be assuming Ed will be in decent nick.

On a better note: I notice Shane Watson's bowling seems to be going pretty well in the IPL. Could provide that useful 4th seam option, and probably a much more reliable line and length than a couple of our quick bowlers eg. Starc.

I did not exactly know where to post this but if anybody is on twitter, my word David Warner is having some quality time with Malcolm Conn.

Eh, interesting.

Dave Warner is now my hero...Craddock loves throwing rocks from his glass house, and I've never been a fan of Conn. Perhaps the reaction was a bit too over the top (and public), but I think he's spot on.
