Ashes 2013 - Australia tour of England June/August 2013

"I felt Australia would have been a stronger side in this Ashes with both me and Mike Hussey in the side," Ponting said. "The Ashes are the pinnacle and England is the greatest tour to be on. But the bottom line is I just wasn't good enough any more to be a part of this team. I knew that.

VERY interesting comments! So Punter feels like he and Huss would make the side better, yet acknowledges he's not good enough to play. If that's not a massive back hand slap to the current top 6, I'm not sure what is. Can't find fault with him though, I think it's true.

Other news yesterday saw the very exciting development of new immigration legislation being introduced in the Aussie parliament. Not exciting of itself, but if the bill is passed before parliament adjourns in a couple of weeks, then Mr Fawad Ahmed may be free to play for Australia in time for the 1st Ashes Test. Immediately Aussies would have a more dynamic spin option. Lyon would still be the safer, more defensive pick I guess, but Fawad will be a great option to have.

Well if you look at experience he's right; only Clarke of the top 6 really has any 100s. On that basis though they should probably be picking Steve Waugh and Glenn McGrath at this point too though.
I think Hussey would be a good addition but Ponting's time has gone.

Is Rogers playing the Hussey role? The senior batsman that bats below Clarke to save Australia?

Also, is it just me or is the England Home Ashes kinda pointless? I mean, whoever wins it will hold it for a few months until it has to be contested again. They don't even get to hold it for 1yr +

Have no idea where he'll bat. I imagine Watson will stay down the order for one. But it will be very interesting to see how they fit 6 openers into the team :p Watson, Warner, Hughes, Khawaja, Cowan and Rogers - my god! Swann must be absolutely licking his lips - potentially 5 left handed openers to bowl at.

Fawad Ahmed haven't seen him play so i want to know is he really the best spinner available now and what about Ashton Agar

If Rogers plays he really should be opening, would be a waste having a guy like him down there. We really need an opener that isn't flashing at stuff and can convert his starts. Cowan in theory was meant to be that man but he's been getting out softly of late and struggles to convert starts because his technique is not good enough to survive for a long enough period for him to make a 100. Plus his form in County cricket is a worry.

Everyone who has seen Fawad Ahmed has been impressed - not Shane Warne level of impressed...but enough that he might be the best spinner in Aus right now. And I think with so many right handers in the England side, and perhaps a mental weakness against Aussie leg spinners :p, then he's a good chance at supplanting Lyon in the upcoming series. Maybe not at the start, but Lyon will have to perform well to keep his spot.

Don't think Agar is rated as highly - he's seen more as a kid who will have a good future. I think Jon Holland would have been ahead of him, had he been fit this summer. I liked that they took Agar to India for a while, give him a taste of the top level and challenge him to take his game to that next level.

Agar should have jumped infront of Holland, he has shown very little to date and would be another spinner picked with a poor domestic record.

Am not excited by this Fawad Ahmed thing, yeah, good on the guy, of course I support him, but is it really going to make any difference?
There was a lot of excitement about Imran Tahir, but he has been smashed out of international cricket for now, so what makes it any more likely a player with a far less impressive record will do any better?
Lyon is a very good spinner, and has done very well for himself, but people still complain, yet if Fawad Ahmed did anywhere near as well people would be jumping up and down being excited, for the sheer fact he is a legspinner.

Am also tired of this stuff about the selectors being the problem for choosing the wrong players, the problem is the players, we don't have any batsmen good enough these days, and no depth, it has nothing to do with picking the right spinner.

Just have to accept that sometimes Australia (of all places, shock horror), is not always going to be the best cricket team.

Enjoy the success when it rolls around again, maybe in 5 or 10 years, when a new generation is playing the game.

Almost put my neck out while nodding in agreement to this! TOTALLY right. Selectors (or coaches) are an easy scapegoat - how about some performances from players other than MJ Clarke?

As for Fawad Ahmed, Coverdale's article on cricinfo today is a good one about having realistic expectations:

Some runs for Khawaja, enough to put some pressure on Warner and Hughes. Haddin with a 100, another of our oldies performing.

And Siddle getting 80-odd, nice job Petey. If Haddin wasn't in the team already, then he's got that foot firmly in the door now. It's 'only' Scotland, but weight of runs should always count.

Interested to see how Sayers goes with the ball.

Siddle scoring a century :)

About Ponting, why is it that he absolutely sucked against the Saffers. I mean Warner and Cowan both scored a century against them and Ponting just failed and yet he's dominating a lot of domestics.
