Ashes 2015 - Australia tour of England July/September 2015

I don't think its about Moeen being dropped. Its more about where he fits in. Can he open in tests? We don't know. I, for one, don't think Lyth should be dropped, but he needs stern words. His last dismissal was probably the only good ball he's been out to in this series. The rest have been silly shots. He needs to learn to take his time.

But on Moeen, he is not a good enough bowler to get in the side on this alone, and we need a front line spinner. Look at the damage Lyon did. So, do you bring in Rashid (who isn't that great) and drop Bairstow for Moeen? I don't think there was anything Bairstow could have done for his wicket. It was an absolute snorter from MJ. Or do you drop Bell on the back of that performance? Although saying that, his first dismissal was very tame and he should have been gone for 20 in the second. Its where to fit Moeen in more than anything. The other option is to drop Butler and let Bairstow keep, but Butlers glove work has been superb and he is a very good batsmen. I'd like to see him open actually.

For now:

Lyth
Cook
Bell
Root
Bairstow
Stokes
Buttler
Ali
Woakes
Broad
Finn

For the future:

Opener?
Cook
Root
Bairstow
Stokes
Buttler
Ali
Broad
Front line spinner?
Finn
Anderson

Woakes and Wood to be kept around the squad and rotated around to keep all 5 quicks fresh.

So it looks like Wood will just come in for Anderson. Not sure about that. Hope he has a good one.

Does anyone fancy trying to pick an English one-day team that doesn't get a traditional post-Ashes thumping?

:ar: Moeen Ali
:bat: Alex Hales
:bat: James Taylor :c:
:bat: Joe Root
:wk: Jos Buttler
:ar: Ben Stokes
:ar: Liam Dawson
:ar: Adil Rashid
:ar: David Willey
:bwl: Steven Finn
:bwl: Reece Topley

Leave out Broad, as he has a big job to do in the Tests and will need the break. Drop Morgan, as he averages about minus four for Middlesex this season. Reserves:

:bat: Steve Davies
:bat: Jonny Bairstow
:wk: Sam Billings
:bwl: Liam Plunkett

:bat: Alex Hales
:bat: Jason Roy
:bat: Joe Root
:bat: Eoin Morgan :c:
:wk: Jos Buttler
:ar: Ben Stokes
:bat: Sam Billings
:ar: Adil Rashid
:ar: Jamie Overton
:bwl: Mark Wood
:bwl: Steven Finn

Morgan has been in poor form for Middlesex but he had an excellent series against NZ both with bat and with the captaincy so he doesn't deserve to be dropped in the slightest. Time to get one of the Overtons in, and I would go for Jamie right now although Craig isn't too far away. Would give Roy one more series because he can be destructive but he needs to show it in international cricket. As for the bowlers Finn and Wood will be the main bowlers, but Topley and Plunkett won't be far away.

I think Morgan has enough credit in the bank after the NZ series, but I agree that his county form is a real worry.

I think David Willey did a pretty good job against NZ, but it seems he's carrying an injury that's making it difficult to bowl. Can't see the point if him playing really.

Would be great if they give Topley a go. He's done well in limited overs cricket for three years now, and back in 2011, when I met Geoff Miller (then chairman of selectors), I told him to keep an eye on Topley. He didn't seem to know much about him then.

This team is such a risk. Going in with 5 bowlers these days is a massive gamble. Especially when you've got guys that you wouldn't be confident in getting through ten decent overs, like Stokes or Overton. Both can be very expensive. In which case, you either have to replace Roy with Ali or Billings with an all rounder like Willey or Woakes.

This present Nasser Hussain and Shane Warne segment, is one of the most informative segments I have ever seen on any cricket show ever. Hover-Touch-Go, I will remember that.

It's always nice when this sort of thing happens. Never like anyone to miss the action - I'd hate it to have happened this afternoon whilst the Aussies were asleep.

Good thing I tuned in only 15 mins late ... 30 mins late and I could have missed the whole of Aus 1st innings.
