Ashes Cricket General Discussion

I just got the game and it looks beautiful, and coming from DBC 14, the learning curve is quite steep. I predominantly bat and the first thing I noticed was that I couldn't play off the backfoot to most deliveries, and that's quite disappointing. Given that Smith was one of mo capped players, I had hoped it would be possible to play off the backfoot to most deliveries.

Some other things I noticed was that the placement of the foot is much more important compared to how it was in DBC 14, and gameplay the feels a bit slower. Hoping to try out the modifiers as mentioned in the other thread to see if I can emulate DBC style footwork and game speed.

Another issue I found in my first match was that the bowlers were swinging it like bananas and Starc was bowling cutters like chinaman delivers, turning so sharp, which took away from the immersion. This was in a casual test match between England and Australia, and I was playing as England. The pitch was green and soft. I get that swing is to be expected on a green pitch but so much swing seemed unrealistic. Has anyone else experienced this? The lack of ability to play backfoot shots and this is my biggest issue right now.

Backfoot shots have been nerfed since DBC 14 for some reason. It was the case with DBC 17 and the trend has continued in AC 2017. There's no incentive playing backfoot shots as they are underpowered. Other than playing a hook or cut shot to 3rd man, sticking to front foot makes sense. The balance between the front & back foot is simply not there and that's another area the game has regressed since DBC 14. It's unfortunate but I maintain that adding sliders, especially the 'Ball Marker Display Time' one, in DBC 14 would lead to a much better game than DBC 17 or AC 2017.

Yes Backfoot shot is an issue,I mean some don't connect, some connect and the ball doesn't travel even at ideal timing .Backfoot shots are very important and also very satisfying to play IMO, also spend few days in the game and I will see a post from you saying batting is easy coming from DBC Series for sure! Well, if you talk about modifiers people would want a setting which is challenging but not at the cost of being too premeditated which restricts you exploring shot choices etc..But still after a day the new modifier setting won't make a difference and you gonna hit easy peasy sixes which is a real real turn off.

and AI edges... then i'm with you.

Am I missing something obvious here?
Using career batting camera close and recently the following happens without me changing any camera settings:
With the batting modifier enabled, after the bowler releases the ball and I select my shot, the camera angle changes to batsman far when the ball is about halfway down the pitch. I'e never connected with a shot as it is completely off putting.
If I disable the batting modifier then all is normal . I play on batting hardest but have tried all difficulty options without success. This means I can't use the batting sliders.
I'e tried restarting etc but still have the problem .
Any ideas?

Yes. I have been playing very little, but with the modifiers enabled, I can confirm this is an issue.

It seems like it has something to do with the game assuming that we’re either too early into the shot or too late, which is not always the case.

Please put it up in the bugs thread.

I'm guessing it's when you play cricket on a book ;)
Ya ri
Courage... ? I'll leave that there. You know nothing about me or how much courage I have or have showed... !

I accept 'your' apology for not finding a girl\boy and buying a crate of beer and playing with them in the same room loads of fun actually sharing those moments together.

You've made the list.
[DOUBLEPOST=1514678770][/DOUBLEPOST]Have no idea u go from where to where we are here discussing ashes how come u reach to beers no link just like missing links in ashes 17
Hahaha

Inability to play every ball on front foot/back foot is progressive gameplay from dbc14 not regressive

It's not about "inability to play every ball on front/back foot". It's about not replicating batsmen or batting with a pre-dominant back foot game. Back foot punch through the covers or through Point/Backward Point or back foot punch/drive down the ground are some of the most elegant shots in the sport but in Ashes Cricket you simply don't get any value for those shots. Neither is playing a glance off back foot a realistic option as majority of the times, a hook animation is all you get.

On a hard/bouncy wicket or against deliveries short of good length one should be able to drive off the back foot and these shots should be comparable to front foot drives in power but they barely get past the fielding circle and I haven't had a back foot driven boundary in the game. There should be a penalty for playing off the back foot in case deliveries are pitched up but when the deliveries are slightly short of good length, you should be able to choose to play off the back foot. In DBC 14 you could actually play off the back foot but since then back foot has been nerfed and all you can do is play cut or hook off the back foot. And just like in DBC 14, if you play off the back foot, you get an extra bit of time and you are not as hurried as you are when you play off the front foot. IMO that was one of the better features in DBC 14 and I used to love to play off the back foot against genuine quicks as it used to get you a bit of extra time that allowed you not be late on the shot and time the ball a bit better.

IMO the following tweaks are needed on the batting front (along with better balance between bat & ball, which is a different discussion altogether) :-
1. Front foot square drive and front foot glances needs to get their power turned down.
2. Backfoot shots need to be ramped up in terms of power and in some cases (e.g., against short of good length deliveries or when deliveries are thigh high or higher) back foot shots should actually be more powerful than the front foot ones. This added layer will add complexity around shot selection.
3. Back foot glances should be easier to play. Maybe an easier option is that when folks play towards Square Leg or Fine Leg off the back foot, either a hook/pull or glance animation kicks in depending on the height of the delivery. E.g., if the delivery is chest high or higher, the game automatically chooses a hook/pull animation else the glance animation kicks in.

I think this game has a limitation in animations to be honest. Even if you increase the shot power, most of the deliveries wouldn't connect off a back foot shot because the animations don't allow that. I played a backfoot defence with Cook to a straight delivery on a lengthy slightly full of good length and the ball ended up going under my bat and smashed the stumps. This would have been a safe backfoot option in DBC 14, and I'm sure in real life as well as I've seen batsman do it. If this can't be fixed, I'd be very disappointed.

I also think its the Animations thats limiting the game.

I mean , I have just witnessed a Square Drive Six , hit 106m , and the bat animation showed a small little punch.

Alot of the Shot animations needs a bit of work , especially that one .

And dont get me started on the awful , zig zag running of the striker to the non-strikers end , ending in a casual bat halfway past the crease but not grounded runout .....

I mean , can they not default slide their bats in , like we were taught since lower grade ?

Even the cut shot in backfoot and front foot not perfect at a perticular bounce short ball it always misses the ball.
The bat too not having a straight face while playing square.
It goes towards long off.
