Australia A tour of Zimbabwe

Seems we have some players that can play spin, the spinners from Zimbabwe weren't as effective as they usually are against us. Can't be too long before Lyon grabs the ODI spinners jersey and Starc continuing where he left off.

^Be interesting to see what the pecking order will be spinner wise. Doherty and Hauritz both got contracts, but aren't here. I would assume that Doherty would be an ODI spinner only after his poor Ashes and Hauritz could do both and might (should...) get his Test job back now that Ricky is gone. That means Lyon could become the 2nd or 3rd ODI spin choice with Doherty and Hauritz in the mix, while in the longer stuff Beer and Krejza would be fighting for the 2nd spinners job for the SL tour. But it's such a mess that I don't think it would take much to jump up a couple of spots in the pecking order(or down...)

And then of course there's Steve Smith. I guess he'll probably be the #7 for both teams in SL because there will be a desire to play 2 spinners.

Zimbabwe have been hit like a tracer bullet!

Yes, the win was 'just what the doctor ordered'...Lucky Aus A had some 'cool customers' in the middle order...:D

Yea who knows what the Australian selectors have in mind when it comes to spin bowlers and their pecking order :p

That was a bad loss for Zimbabwe, they crumbled under pressure. That was with their best batsmen as well except for Tatenda Taibu, who will have to come back in the next game. They might also go back to Charles Coventry, His bad form never looks like ending. I'd like to see them try out Sikander Raza or Tino Mawoyo who are both talented young batsmen. They could even bring in Chamu Chibhabha, he's a pretty good all-rounder.

It's a pretty bad sign, when Zimbabwe's spinners arn't getting wickets or at least keeping it tight.

It's best to give credit where it's due, the Australian batsmen played every ball on its merit and let the bat do the talking, now the team has to take it day by day and keep their eye on the ball. :p

Butterworth with another good display, Hastings is a class above this field atm. The SA A side has a fair bit of international experience so our boys are going pretty well to beat them by 50.

Haha - indeed.

Just a note about this tournament - it's an excellent idea :thumbs I think this is the way the lesser nations should be given a shot, against 'A' teams.

And bowling dam well at that! Surely must be Hastings, he's been producing figures like that through this series.

I think it is meant to be Copeland, not too sure though. 7 overs for 19 runs would be very impressive for a wicket keeper batsman who has never bowled at a high level before :p

No real consistent selection policy with the selectors regarding this tour. Don't know how guys with poor one dayer records are getting games.

If everyone was fully fit, this would be my Australia A team

S. Marsh
Finch
Voges
Maddinson/Lynn
Ferguson
Wade
Christian
Hastings
Pattinson
Starc
Lyon

Faulkner unlucky to miss out. Paine is too slow. A one day strike rate of 68 hurts the team so much. Rotate Lynn/Maddinson. McKay on the bench.

4-day team

Marsh
Hughes
Khawaja
Maddinson
Lynn
McDonald
Paine
Faulkner
Butterworth
O'Keefe
Swan

Chris Swan is one of the most underrated bowlers in Australian cricket. He has a great record and is handy with the bat. He's 32 now, which is old, but he could still play cricket for another 4 or so years. It's good to pick and develop the youth, but at the same time you also want the best team possible.

McDonald should still be in the selectors thoughts for test selection. The last year he has been on fire and his overall batting overage is now just below 40. He has a very handy bowling average of 29 as well and as we saw in South Africa he does a job for the time. He can tie up and end which frees up the roller coaster bowling of Mitchell Johnson.

The teams that I've picked have a couple of experienced players who should be pushing for national selection as well as younger players who have performed. Young talented players who have scored runs or taken wickets to actually get in the team, instead of players being given a free ride on natural talent.

Copeland is listed as playing and has his bowling figures listed. 1/3 off 2.2 overs or something. Might be Michael Beer? If it was Wade he would've come in to bat before Mitchell Starc unless he got injured while fielding. Maddinson hasn't batted as well so I assume he's injured himself. You're always gonna struggle with the bat if you have Tim Paine coming in at no. 4 and then the bowling all-rounders at 5.

I wouldnt have Voges or McDonald in any A-team since they dont a future in the AUS team in any format IMO, especially McDonald.

Copeland was listed as the other opening bowler where Wade was, so it was Copeland I believe.

Seems really hard to judge how our bowlers are doing because it is such bowler friendly conditions such that even Copeland is going well in this format. None the less Lyon is really putting his hand up as is Starc while Hastings should have been in the side all along.

I think they are picking guys who they think have potential to play for Australia in the next year or so and want to have a look at them to see how they handle tours, playing in unfamiliar conditions etc. It's not about picking the best Aus A team possible eg. Brad Hodge, Michael Klinger, James, Hopes, Chris Swan, Andrew McDonald etc. because in the grand scheme of things, no one cares if Aus A wins or not. Might as well use it as a testing ground for players with potential.
