why do we?

Australia has rarely if ever produced an alrounder of quality AND we have been the top team for 5-10 years without an allrounder - if your batsman and bowlers do what they are suppose to, we dont need one. Plus dont forget our bowlers are handy with the bad as well.

I wish we could drop this nonsence of a allrounder which only came about because Flintoff had one good series against us in the Ashes.

So you are moving Hussey up the order?

Yes we don't need one now, but what about the future? Will our bowlers be handy with the bat like they are now? They certainly won't be as good in the bowling department.

you hope they would

we are teaching our younsters to be handy with the bat if your a bowler and vica versa. My cousin playes cricket (hes under 13's atmo) and was opening and got a trophy for most wickets.

Could do I guess but that would mean Cosgrove definitely won't get a game.
I see the selectors bringing in Hopes due to the bowling problems. They don't have that much faith in our bowlers I don't think.

Flintoff has shown how precious an all rounder is to the team and as you say Aus. should just face the fact that there are no all rounder who could match Flintoff or even a Jacques Kallis. Also Flintoff has performed well in more that one series, he has performed consistently for the last few years, its just that many realised Flintoff's full potential in the Ashes.

Agreed, the attitude of complacency can't go on much longer, Australian Cricket needs a solid foundation for the future and different talents will have to be developed, as the same plans won't always work in every era, even though they've been successful in our lifetime. Youth in the bowling department has been scarcely opted for, and although the talent there doesn't look to bad, with the bat it's not overly prospective. ( i.e. Bollinger, Tait, Bird)

Isn't Bird handy with the bat? I remember reading he was a handy lower order batsmen in cricinfo. Tait well he had a good small inns for SA one match where he hit four 4s. Bollinger not too much hope I don't think.

Well I stuffed up with Bird there, he's actually half decent, and so is Johnson, but I dunno about Tait....Bollinger can hit, pretty far too, but not a great deal apart from that. By the way, can Hilfenhaus bat?

nup hilfie is a bit of a bunny as they say lol

Tait smashed that Pura half century a few months back and Johno is alright for a tailender.
Bollinger.........hmmmmm
and Birdie is probably the only one with a batsman's technique

Tait actually has 2 50s. I knew my boy had talent with the bat :p
Johnson has shown he can bat so I guess we have 2 guys that we can develop on like we have with Warne, Dizzy and Lee.

Aaron Bird impressed me last season, in the ING cup especially....he proved very effective with working with Bollinger and Henriques

hopefully we see him in the green and gold in the next few ;)

Gonna be great to see all these fresh faces (batsmen) in the odi team and for once most of them deserved a chance due to good form and a good season.
Normally they look back too far.

Johnson reminds me of Brendan Julian not sure if he is as useful with the bat though.

I think Gilly is going to be awesome to watch,no pressure slow wickets.
He is my tip for player of the odi series.

Who are the bowlers we have over there for the odi's?
Lee,Johnson,Bracken,Dorey ????

From what i saw of Cullen i cant see what all the fuss about him is.
Doesnt spin it much, also didnt give the ball much flight.
Hope it was just nerves coz he didnt look anything special.

He definitely isn't in the class that Julian was with the bat, not that he was exceptional but could at least be referred to as a genuine allrounder, but Johnson can definitely salvage late runs, build partnerships and provide support, so that's a decent platform in which to develop that aspect of his game from. I don't remember Julian too much as he existed, in terms of his cricketing career, when I was very young, but I dunno how he reminds you of Johnson with the ball- probably because he's a left armer :p

Anyway, GK, Bird definitely has impressed me too, he's made the most of opportunities and matured through the experiences, particularly in the ING Cup format, and has displayed the ability to maintain pressure through variety, yet at the same time developing a plan and sticking to it. At times I've seen him move it both ways at good pace, which is obviously a lethal trait if it can be reproduced consistently.

Lies! :p

His flight, drift and spin are what impress me (and others that I know) when I have seen him in the ING Cup.

Like with the other bowlers in the first Test, coming in without any proper practice is probably a bit much, especially for a player with negligible international experience.

So then have the Aussie press declared 3 days of national mourning after the search for the "All-Rounder" has finished?
