Australia vs England ODI Series - 7 matches - Sep 4 to Sep 20

Strauss is capable of playing agressive and dogged innings, quite why you'd drop the only batsman in the side doing a decent job I don't know - even if down the order into an unfamiliar role.

Strauss is an opener, nothing else. Denly is too. By definition Ravi drops down to 3, possibly 4 with Shah going up to 3?

Strauss averages 35 in ODIs opening, I find it amazing he gets stick. Sure he had a spell where he was looking too suspect outside off stump, but he's got over that with aplomb

STRAUSS ODIs - BY BATTING POSITION

Opener : 44 inns, 1469 runs @ 35.83
No 3 : 13 inns, 395 runs @ 30.38
No 4 : 28 inns, 731 runs @ 30.46
No 5 : 1 inns, 26 runs @ 26.00

Not bad in all positions, but most productive opening. The only criticism I would have is 17 fifties and only three hundreds, two opening and one at no 4.

STRAUSS ODIs - HUNDREDS

06/07/04 (Lords) 100 vs West Indies batting at no 4 in his 11th ODI. Strauss and Flintoff shared a 4th wicket partnership of 226 having been 54/3. England lost by seven wickets as Anderson went for 69 runs off 9.1 overs (two wickets) and Collingwood was hit for 58 off 9.0 overs.

21/06/05 (Trent Bridge) 152 vs Bangladesh opening, putting on 141 for the opening stand as England amassed 391/4 and won by 168 runs. This was Strauss' 32nd ODI. Tremlett took 4/32, Collingwood 6/31

22/03/09 (Providence Stadium) 105 vs West Indies opening, next highest scorer for England was Mascarenhas with 29 as England lost by 21 runs. Strauss was the 9th wicket to fall, only faced 129 balls and hit only seven fours. Some bright spark included Gareth Batty, 0/38 off six overs

Easy series win from here to be honest. Now that Australia have been lulled into a false sense of security. Wright's upcoming 100 in the next two matches will result in our victories. Followed by Bresnan taking two fivers which lead to the win. Simples.

Hey let's not forget Bopara's explosive double century to finish it off, with one Lee over going for 6 maximums.

I've got to say, I don't rate Shah one bit, he makes batting look incredibly difficult and I'm more worried when he sets off for a run than I am when the AI does in AC09

Nice, I feel the pain. :doh

We focus on the batting, but are our bowlers doing anything?

Sidebottom : 2 wkts @ 66.00
Bresnan : 1 wkt @ 71.00
Anderson : 2 wkts @ 72.00
Broad : 0/52 off 9 overs

The bowlers are doing a hell of a lot better than the batsmen that's for sure. To my Aussie eye, Sidebottom is bowling well using a very good containing length. Anderson however is not, too many balls on the pads and no movement at all. It will be good for England that he's resting. Bresnan bowled well at Michael Clarke, but meh that didn't mean much the other night. I'd stick with him though. And Broad should be back, he'll be better than Anderson.

Other than that, I'm not really sure what England can do to get more wickets. The common problem with ODI teams is that they play too many dobbler-type bowlers and don't have enough of their Test bowlers - the wicket takers. But England already is using many of their Test bowlers - Broad, Anderson and Swann. Maybe Onions would be worth a trundle instead of Bresnan, but even Bresnan and Sidebottom have been in the Test squad this summer.

And to me Rashid is not really an attacking option either. If Australia sit on him, like game 1, he won't take wickets IMHO. He'll only get wickets if Australia takes risks against him - like any of the other bowlers. I'd only play him if the pitch looks slow to be honest.

Opener : 44 inns, 1469 runs @ 35.83

That isn't the best record as an opener. Its something I would expect from a big hitting opener like Gilly. For the anchor type you would expect them to be in the high 30s. But I understand his figures will be skewed by his poor attempt in ODIs before he became the batter he is now so that will improve if he continues playing like he has in this series. His last knock was good with a strike rate of over 80, just needs to convert into a 100.

I don't know why Bopara is batting so slow, he should be told to go out there and smash it now play the second anchor role.

Here is cricinfo predicted lineup for us

1 Shane Watson, 2 Tim Paine (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Callum Ferguson, 6 Michael Hussey, 7 Cameron White, 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Nathan Hauritz, 10 Brett Lee, 11 Nathan Bracken.

Ferguson can play anywhere in the lower order, White on the other hand was pretty average at finishing off an innings so he would be better in the 5 spot.

Ponting's return will definately boost and strengthen Aus side...

England are joke of a one day team, how can they still not know how to win one day cricket games? They've been crap since OD cricket was first introduced. Massive fail.

Yes they really dont play ODI well, whether its at home or away, they are good test side, but not that good ODI side...With Flintoff(now retired) and KP(due to injury) out then its really difficult, its possible for Aus for a white wash....
