BBL|11 - Derp's Megathread + General Discussions

Why have a proven performer like Ben Dunk have opted out of BBL to participate in the Lanka Premier League? I was quite surprised when I saw him in Sri Lanka.
Because he got tossed out of the Stars for being completely s**t last year - he averaged about 10. I did think the Heat could use him but Dunk himself didn't seem keen to return after the Stars terminated his contract halfway through last year.

Also, team news:

Renegades XI: 1 Sam Harper (wk), 2 MacKenzie Harvey, 3 Jake Fraser-McGurk, 4 James Seymour, 5 Jonathan Merlo, 6 Mohammad Nabi, 7 Will Sutherland, 8 James Pattinson, 9 Kane Richardson (capt), 10 Reece Topley, 11 Zahir Khan

Strikers XI: 1 Jake Weatherald, 2 Matt Short, 3 Harry Nielsen (wk), 4 Jon Wells, 5 Ryan Gibson, 6 Daniel Drew, 7 George Garton, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Daniel Worrall, 10 Wes Agar, 11 Peter Siddle (capt).

BBL debuts for James Seymour and Daniel Drew (as well as internationals Garton and Topley). Also interesting to see Matt Short and Mac Harvey opening the batting - neither has done that at BBL level before either.

Edit: BTW, I'm cooking again tonight, so there's gonna be some infrequent updates early

George Garton opens the attack with real pace. Rashid makes a meal of fielding the second ball on the point fence, but shows great commitment and saves it from crossing the line. Harvey gets away with a chip over the infield two balls later - some real swing in the air. And finally Harper ramps one from the middle stump! Very interesting shot choice.

WICKET??? Nope! Looked like a textbook nick to first slip but it was off his thigh pad according to the umpire. Worrall is displeased, so is my father who is making gestures at the TV. It's the right decision though. Worrall's doing all the stuff out there, swinging and seaming it both ways. Until the final ball which is a bit short and put about 10 rows back by Harvey. Worrall's so confused by the hit he returns to his marks and prepares to bowl again. Oops.

Missed opportunity! Harper looks anchorless as he charges at everything. Against Garton and Worrall this wasn't an issue, but he dances down and misses Rashid. Luckily Harry Nielsen drops the ball.

0/34 from five overs and a ball thanks to a nice ramp from Harper.

Harper hits one a mile in the air! Nearly hits the roof, but ultimately only nets three runs as it plugs in the outfield.

A shot from Harper! He's moving now. He whips Agar off his pads and nearly makes the second tier! Missed by the crowd as it goes to empty seats. Unfortunate

WICKET! WHAT A BLOODY CATCH FROM MATT SHORT! He's a tall, tall man and it was at Harper's peril to chip over him, even though he was bowling. He tried it anyway because he's Sam Harper, but an astonishing one handed jump and grab breaks the opening stand at 65.

Agar shows his pace to limit his over to just five runs, and the score halfway is 1/70

After a couple quiet overs, Harvey gets it going again! He hits one low and flat and for six. Spilled by the man on the boundary fence.

Big top edge from Harvey now! The ball lands safe and Nielsen can't get there despite sprinting about 40 metres. Good effort though

WICKET! The Power Surge is taken and Fraser McGurk tries to provide the commentators (who are on the boundary for some reason) with a catch. Picks out the man at deep square leg though and he's gone. 2/92
Jimmy Seymour, though! He takes his first ball and whacks it into deep square leg. Reaches the man at cow corner but it's a very tough attempt to keep it in (no chance of a catch without landing outside the rope) and it's dropped over. Six from his first ever BBL ball!

WICKET! Rashid Khan on for his second ever Surge over. He gets cut over point for four, then bowls a five wide. Harvey goes for the big swing again from the next ball though and is clean bowled. Great 56 from the youngster though 3/114
Nabi whacks Rashid for four more over cover! 3/118 from 15

Seymour is fearless! Hits the first ball of Garton he sees over mid on for four (tbf it was a pie). A very ncie slower ball hits him 4 balls later and he picks up the third leg by of his innings

Seymour continues to do exceptionally! He just carries a Siddle bouncer on its way and into the crowd at fine leg. Mac Harvey gives him an ovation on the boundary. Top edges his attempt at a repeat but it drops safe.

A massive bucket tower emerges on the screen. It's putting the tower of Pisa to shame. Good to see the kids enjoying their cricket, even if their mullets are rubbish.

WICKET! Seymour flicks one from Worrall to short third. A good yet short innings. More of the same from the lower order will propel the Renegades to around 170. 4/142
WICKET! What a poor shot from Sutherland. Bunts it straight up to Matt Short and is gone for a duck. The highlight of that entire innings was the song played after his dismissal 5/142

WICKET! At least Jonno Merlo was giving it a go. Went for a big shot down the ground and got beat by the change of pace. Carries only as far as long on 6/144
WICKET! My dad just said the youngsters should get Mohammad Nabi on strike. He did, and replicated Seymour's dismissal 7/146

WICKET! Great catch! Kane Richardson wasn't expected to do better than Seymour or Nabi but he made it really tricky for Wes Agar at short third man. He did get there though. 8/149
WICKET! They keep going hard and they keep going (although with three balls left it is excusable. Pattinson nearly clears the rope but Jono Wells doesn't drop outfield catches 9/151

9/153 is how the Renegades finish. They'll be disappointed with the finish of the innings as nobody could hit anything after Seymour's dismissal. On the other hand, the Strikers brought it back well after the expensive power surge. Slightly in Adelaide's favour but it could still go either way...

Matt Short's turned up! Final ball of Reece Topley's first BBL over, he just flicks it into the stands! Great shot

Huge shout from Weatherald's first ball! Not out is given. Did it pitch outside leg? Only just... Pattinson looks like he wants to cause some destruction.

Another shout from the Renegades! This one had a inside edge. But it's clear Weatherald isn't 100% comfortable. Short, on the other hand, is doing outstanding and replicates his prior shot! 94 metres, so it's longer! Good start for the Strikers

DROPPED! A tough high ball as Pattinson has to run back and try and hold a really tall one from Short. He can't hold on.

WICKET! A big moment from the final ball of Zahir's first over! Short feathers one back, and walks as soon as it sticks in Harper's glove. 1/45

WICKET! OH MY the rest of this sentence was deleted due to utter profanity what a catch that is! Jake Fraser McGurk jumps up right on the boundary, sticks out a hand, holds the ball and lands without dropping it, within a metre of the boundary! The Short catch was ridiculous but that's catch of the season already! Weatherald will be feeling so stiff. Finch on commentary is speechless! 2/50, game back into the balance!

After a quiet few overs, a big skier from Harry Nielsen, but it lands safe in the middle of a few fielders.

And an overthrow to finish the first 10 overs! We're in the same position as last game. The Renegades can break into an unproven lower order with one more wicket, but at 2/82 the Strikers are ahead by a bit of a margin.

Stumping shout from Harper! It's keeper on keeper as Nielsen is the batsman, but his toe is in the crease.
WICKET! Zahir doing everything! Three wickets taken and all three are from him. And while he needed help from Harper and Fraser McGurk earlier, he gets Wells plumb LBW here. Game changes again 3/84

The ball falls in the middle again! Nielsen lucky once more. He's 24 from 24, and the run rate required has reached 8 thanks to Zahir and Richardson's pressure. It's all evened out...

WICKET! More great fielding, albeit less spectacular. Will Sutherland's first ball is a slower ball that Nielsen smokes... straight to Mac Harvey at deep mid wicket. 4/96, game on.

Oh no. Ryan Gibson hurried through for a single and he appears hurt. Replays appear to confirm he's damaged a hamstring. If that's a bad one, his tournament is done after seven balls. Less consequentially in terms of the long term, the Renegades have access to Adelaide's tail after just 13.5 overs. 4/100

After 40 deliveries, we finally have a boundary! Daniel Drew pierces the gap at cow corner for a four. One of the game's better moustaches I have to say. Great 'catch' from Reece Topley too - it was a bump ball but he saved a second boundary from going straight back past him.

WICKET! Garton whipped Sutherland away for a four... next ball was a brilliant yorker that repositioned the furniture. Strikers 5/111, and Ryan Gibson has been seen wearing his pads still...

Huge miss from the Strikers! They were late on calling the Power Surge (edit: confirmed by Sam Harper on the mic)! So surely next over then... with that said they may have bluffed Richardson's tactics here, as he bowls himself.

Power surge called. 5/121, 33 needed from the last 3 overs.

Tight run! Drew can't get it away and Rashid and Topley footrace to the stumps. Rashid wins, and Topley misses anyway. Rashid flicks the next ball over backward point for four. Too much width. Spears the next one down the leg side, but he got the pace and length right... and another boundary outside off! Rashid making his own space here.
WICKET! Just as Rashid got them going again, he slices it directly to Kane Richardson at mid on! Topley's sins are forgiven. 6/131
Or are they? Worrall puts Topley through cow corner for four. And another drop and run single completes an eventful over. Ryan Gibson is spotted getting ready again. Surely you wouldn't unless absolutely necessary...

Thick edge for four from Richardson's third ball! That alleviates some pressure after three dots. 14 needed from 9.
WICKET! Worrall plays on! Wes Agar is coming out. No Gibson yet. 7/140
Drew grabs a boundary from the final ball of the over! Just beats the dive of mid on! Nine needed from the final over, and it's in the hands of a BBL debutant, a tailender and (probably) a hobbled batsman.

The last over
19.1: Wes Agar whacks it back at Pattinson but it's fielded exceptionally by the bowler! Dot ball!
19.2: UP INB THE AIR AND HELD BY THE FIELDER! Agar is out! Good catch by Nabi I think. Out comes Siddle! 8/145, 9 needed from four. They cross, so Drew has strike.
19.3: Swing and a miss! Not a wide too! J-Pat has three dots in a row!
19.4: Good running! They come back for two after they slide it into the deep. 7 needed from 2
19.5: Drew hammers it straight! He grabs two but he needs a boundary for a super over or a six for a victory here. No need for Ryan Gibson after all. This may be the last we've seen of him this BBL.
19.6: BIG TOP EDGE! AND IT PLUGS! TWO RUNS ARE TAKEN! THE RENEGADES WIN BY TWO RUNS! AFTER TWO FIZZERS, WHAT A GAME!

Outstanding game. The Strikers will be quite unhappy with that loss, although they will take some comfort in promising performances by their bowlers. The Renegades, on the other hand, will need to work on their death batting, but the bowling clicked and the top order did enough to spare their blushes and ensure a tight win.

:goldo: Zahir Khan (3/24)
:slvo: Mac Harvey (56)
:bro: Dan Worrall (2/26)

Tomorrow, we have a double-header! I'll have the early game covered, but will likely not see out the late game. Sad really, as it's the Heat

On the second one, Haris Rauf was a thing that happened and the Stars seem to think that any Pakistani they sign will do the same (spoiler alert: Faridoun is quite average from what I've seen of him)
Also Lahore Qalandars have an agreement with the Stars for some of their rookies to play the BBL, somehow.
