BBL|11 - Derp's Megathread + General Discussions

WICKET! Patterson finally picks a fielder. Catch is taken in the outfield, and Gannon has his first. 3/92

Commentators are rubbishing Gaze's fielding abilities. Still think he could have taken the catch that Bazley missed. A quiet over from Mujeeb is completed.

Big appeal as Bazley yorks Turner! But it's probably swinging down. Umpire's choice at most I think

Chris Lynn suggests he'd be satisfied with just one run being added in the last six overs. Optimistic I think, although Evans and Turner have struggled since Patterson departed. Power Surge called. Bartlett serves up a pie to finish up what was a good over, and it goes straight back over his head and into the crowd.

Turner repeats with the second ball of Gannon's next over. 3/130 from 15.2

WICKET! A big top edge from Turner, and it bobs up to Tom Cooper running in from point. The first ball after the Surge produces the wicket, unusually. 4/137

Big full bunger from Bazley. Luckily, it only concedes two nudged to square leg rather than being a big loss for the Heat. A big high ball from Evans follows from the final ball of the over but it lands in no man's land.

WICKET! Hardie lines up Gannon, and only edges it straight through to Peirson. 5/150

WICKET! Agar throws the bat at a wide short one from Bartlett to open the 20th, and snicks through. 6/153
Tye takes one to the inside thigh. Looks painful. Great fielding from Ben Duckett on the last ball prevents a six and limits it to three. 6/157 is the final score, and I'm going to bed.

Well shite. If only we got Patterson earlier.

Tonight, we see the first return game, as a scheduling quirk sees the Strikers and Renegades match up for the second time in two days. Here's the lineups:

Adelaide Strikers: Matt Short, Jake Weatherald, Harry Nielson (wk), Jono Wells, Daniel Drew, Liam Scott, George Garton, Rashid Khan, Daniel Worrall, Wes Agar, Peter Siddle (capt).

X-factor subs: Thomas Kelly, Liam O'Connor

Melbourne Renegades: Sam Harper (wk), Mackenzie Harvey, Jake Fraser-McGurk, James Seymour, Jono Merlo, Mohammad Nabi, Will Sutherland, James Pattinson, Kane Richardson (capt), Reece Topley, Zahir Khan

X-factor subs: Jack Prestwidge, Mitch Perry

One change for each side technically. There's definitely a change for the Strikers, who have Scott in for Gibson (hamstring), and O'Connor to the subs bench. It's trickier for the Renegades, who have no change to the starters, while Mitch Perry comes in as an X-Factor I believe.

Sam Billings opens the innings for the first time ever. Granted, it is in comms... Weatherald with an early boundary seizing on a wide one from Topley and drilling it to the cover fence.

Short hits the first six though! He picks up Pattinson and deposits him onto the rope. A fast start for Adelaide, as a boundary from the final ball takes them to 0/20 from two.

Short repeats the dose to Khan! Actually into the crowd this time though, so it's even better. And the next (legal) ball is even bigger! Great hitting.
WICKET! But revenge from the final ball! Weatherald reads the wrong-un as a regular leggie and pays the price with his bails. 1/34

WICKET! Someone fetch the gold cap for Zahir! Short slices it backward of point. Unfortunately, there is a man at backward point. 2/50
Welp, two balls later, he drags it well down leg (and is lucky to only concede three). 2/54 from 5

Wells started slow, but he was given a bit of short from Sutherland and he just rocks back and dispatches it into the seats at deep square leg. Good shot.

Dropped! Reece Topley and Jake Fraser-McGurk run together towards a big air ball from Nielsen, and neither communicate well enough (it should have been FM's catch but it appeared Topley called it). Then an overthrow from the next ball! Sloppy from the Renegades.

Six more for Wells who picks up Pattinson and drops him over the mid wicket fence! He's rolling now. Good to see after a disappointing BBL10.
WICKET! How's he done that? Nielsen's chopped on with such force that the leg stump has parted company with the ground. 3/81

3/86 after ten overs. Pressure on Wells now, as there's not exactly a ton of batting following him.

The partnership between Drew and Wells has started slowly.
WICKET! Drew is given LBW, and he can't have too many complaints, although there's a question or two about the height. 4/104

Power surge taken in the 15th over, and Richardson bowls his third over.
WICKET! Wells would have needed to launch for the surge to be a success. He instead feathers through to Harper. Strikers in bother at 5/111
Welp, Richardson delivers a bean ball immediately after the wicket to produce the inaugral free hit of BBL11. A bit contentious, that. Free hit goes to Rashid Khan. He slices it away to four, but it's another high full toss... it was higher than the first one, but not called. Odd. 5/117 from 15

WICKET! Rashid whips one to the point boundary, then edges a four, then chips one that balloons straight to Nabi at mid on. 6/125
WICKET! Scott produces a carbon copy after a slower ball! Hat trick ball for Topley coming up 7/125
Hattrick ball is slashed for four over point. Good shot, bad ball.

Another bucket tower on the TV. This one falls over like the Strikers batting, as Brad Hodge quips.

WICKET! A very odd shot from Worrall. Throws the kitchen sink at a slow bouncer, edges, and is easily caught by Harper. 8/139
Another big airball from Topley! This one is only chest height so no no-ball but something in the air maybe?

WICKET! High ball from Garton and an easy catch for Nabi. 9/149
WICKET! Wes Agar chops on to end it all. 150 needed for victory for the Renegades, 149 all out. This is a massive W of an innings for the Gades, and they should capitalise. The Strikers, though, can defend well and bowling is their strength, so anything can happen...

Two boundaries in the first over is the way to get off to a good start. One's upgraded to a six on review too! Harper dances down and whacks Short over his head. Expensive start.

Update from earlier: Kane Richardson's first wicket, that of Wells I think, was his 100th in the BBL. For anyone still looking for a bowler in my draft, I implore you to check the list of BBL wicket takers...

I can't hear a lot due to the rain absolutely tossing down here, but I can see a few boundaries. 0/36 from the powerplay thanks to a big top edge that runs away to the fine leg fence from the final ball.

WICKET! Comical run out, and a lack of match awareness costs the Renegades! A bit LBW appeal (pitches outside leg), sees Mac Harvey take off for a leg bye, only to see Sam Harper at the other end being extremely confused as to what his partner is doing. Harvey is the one run out, quite deservedly, and the first runout of the tournament is complete 1/39 after 4.5

Nice shot from Seymour after being elevated to three! Upper cuts Agar just over the ropes. 69 metre six - nice

Big edge! Seymour nicks a Worrall swinger but it bounces before it reaches Nielsen. The Renegades have been subdued recently. Need to speed up soon.

WICKET! That one does carry and it's Rashid of course! Seymour is optimistic in trying to switch hit the GOAT of legspin, and gloves it straight into the hands of Nielsen. Big wicket 2/59

2/69 from 10 overs. Strikers get one point, and they're probably favourites at this point to win the remaining trio too.

WICKET! Harper's gone! He picks out Short at fine leg with a hook. Oh dear. 3/72, and Fraser McGurk still hasn't come out. Could there be an injury?

The Renegades continue to move slowly. Merlo and Nabi take just three from Siddle in the 12th.

WICKET! Jon Merlo didn't have a lot of chance against Rashid Khan did he, let's be honest. Plumb LBW. 4/80

WICKET! It's all going wrong. Nabi nails it out into the deep, and Weatherald judges it well - he nearly falls back over the boundary, but Worrall gets the key wicket 5/84

WICKET! Sweet Caroline booms through the speakers, but the Renegades will have a vile taste in their mouths. Fraser-McGurk feathers through to the keeper. 6/85, wickets in the last three overs and no boundaries in the last 8 of them.
Seven plays 'Another One Bites The Dust' as he walks off. Much more appropriate music.
WICKET! THAT WAS OUTSTANDING! Pattinson can't be as annoyed with that as Sutherland. It was first slip's catch, but it may not have carried, so Nielsen goes diving across him and takes a blinder. 7/85, they've made much more than the Stars did at least???

WICKET! Big ball from Sutherland! And Weatherland takes a great catch after a massive amount of hangtime! 8/89. Brad Hodge (rightfully) questions the lack of power surge taken.

Sam Billings in commentary is discovering quickly he doesn't need to fear the Renegades this year. At least, their tactics that is.

A long run out check for Richardson, but apart from that, Rashid's final over is surprisingly uneventful.

WICKET! Richardson charges at Siddle who bowls a big full toss, and the resultant miscue goes straight to mid wicket. The Renegades captain has to go, despite protesting about the height of the full toss. 9/99
A big noise from Zahir's first ball! Not given out. May have been a nick, may not have, but it's certainl a chance.

WICKET! Worrall hits when Zahir misses. All out for 100, that's game.
A great bowling performance from the Strikers but a 7/28 choke from the Renegades. There are reasons why I suggested the Gades wouldn't make finals. Not many great batting performances from either team actually, after the powerplay was done for the Strikers.

:goldo: Wes Agar (3/17)
:slvo: Rashid Khan (2/17)
:bro: Kane Richardson (4/32)

Seven's put a big up on Maxi in the lead up. So he'll be out for 3. Also, Will Pucovski in commentary - this should be fun.

Sydney Thunder: Alex Hales, Sam Whiteman, Matthew Gilkes, Sam Billings (wk), Alex Ross, Daniel Sams, Ben Cutting, Nathan McAndrew, Chris Green (capt), Gurinder Sandhu, Tanveer Sangha
Sydney Thunder X Factor Subs: Lachlan Hearne and Jason Sangha

Melbourne Stars: Marcus Stoinis, Joe Clarke (wk), Nick Larkin, Glenn Maxwell (capt), Hilton Cartwright, Andre Russell, Beau Webster, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Adam Zampa, Qais Ahmad, Brody Couch
Melbourne Stars X Factor Subs: Clint Hinchliffe and Sam Rainbird

HUGE inclusions for the Stars. Stoinis in, Russell in, NCN in, Qais in. Brody Couch deserves to retain that spot and he does. As for the Thunder, unchanges and why not. Although I've never heard of one of their subs...

No boundaries from the first over, but Sams overpitches on the second, and on the MCG where it's short straight, you don't do that. Clarke's vicious swat nearly scones Stoinis. The next ball does break something - his bat. A new one is retrieved in the over break

WICKET! And there goes Clarke! Unfortunate really, he bottom edges a big swing into the thigh pad. Alex Ross' eyes light up (probably) and he dives in to take a good catch. 1/18

Stoinis gets a big edge from Sams' first ball of his second over! Goes flying into space though as no short fine leg exists. Two balls later he executes properly and mauls it to the fence. The next ball goes to the fence at mid off with what is basically a baseball shot! Stars moving.

WICKET! OH DEAR WHAT ON EARTH! Stoinis calls Maxi through, but the ball is fielded well. Seeing this, Stoinis changes his call, runs back into his crease, looks up, and is horrified to see Maxi there too. The direct hit misses but the relay through beats Stoinis to the other end and he's on his way 2/31
2/33 from 5. Will that loss of Stoin bite the Stars?
