BBL|11 - Derp's Megathread + General Discussions

Sixers' challenge is fading. No boundaries in the last four overs barring a monster six hit by Philippe off Rogers.

Meanwhile, across town in a closed doors match:
8.58 pm The news is that the Scorchers have won the bat flip and will be batting first.

Scorchers XI:
1 Colin Munro, 2 Cameron Bancroft (wk), 3 Kurtis Patterson, 4 Laurie Evans, 5 Ashton Turner (capt), 6 Aaron Hardie, 7 Ashton Agar, 8 Andrew Tye, 9 Matthew Kelly, 10 Jason Behrendorff, 11 Peter Hatzoglou.

Scorchers X-Factor Players are Nick Hobson and David Moody.

Strikers XI: 1 Jake Weatherald, 2 Matt Short, 3 Harry Nielsen (wk), 4 Jon Wells, 5 Daniel Drew, 6 Thomas Kelly, 7 Rashid Khan, 8 Daniel Worrall, 9 Wes Agar, 10 Peter Siddle, 11 Fawad Ahmed.

Strikers X-Factor Subs are Liam Scott and Liam O'Connor. No George Garton in the XI tonight. There's been no communication about any injury. Thomas Kelly is making his Strikers debut.

Late again! Missed a 14-run first over for the Thunder.
Thunder XI: 1 Alex Hales, 2 Sam Whiteman, 3 Matthew Gilkes, 4 Sam Billings (wk), 5 Alex Ross, 6 Daniel Sams, 7 Ben Cutting, 8 Nathan McAndrew, 9 Chris Green (capt), 10 Gurinder Sandhu, 11 Tanveer Sangha.
Thunder's X-Factor players are Jason Sangha and Chris Tremain.

Stars XI: 1 Marcus Stoinis, 2 Joe Clarke, 3 Nick Larkin, 4 Glenn Maxwell (capt), 5 Hilton Cartwright, 6 Beau Webster, 7 Andre Russell, 8 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 9 Adam Zampa, 10 Qais Ahmad, 11 Brody Couch.
Stars X-Factor players are Clint Hinchcliffe & Sam Rainbird.
This means both teams are unchanged from yesterday although Tremain is new as an Xfactor I think.

Qais with a big appeal from his first ball. Pitching outside leg. Hales gets revenge two balls later though by drilling him back over his head for six!

WICKET! The third over of spin in the powerplay produces the breakthrough! Whiteman gets a big edge straight up (but not very high), and a good effort from Joe Clarke who is moving one way and has to turn on a dime to the other sends him on his way 1/24
Gilkes moving early! Runs at Maxwell and chips him over mid wicket for four. He has more skill than me, whose forearm muscle wants to disconnect from the elbow after a 30 minute net session.

WICKET! Rubbish shot from Gilkes. Exposes all three stumps to sweep, and Qais chooses to hit middle. Performs what appears to be a interpretative dance given he can't contact his teammates 2/33, and the score doesn't move before the end of the fifth

Awkward collision on the field! Both are okay, it would appear to be Joe Clarke and possibly Coulter-Nile. A better highlight the next ball as Hales helicopters Russell for four over mid off. Brad Hodge has tried to emulate the haircut of Andre Russell and failed spectacularly. Looks like a btec 2005 Michael Clarke, if 2005 Michael Clarke was twenty years older.

WICKET! Couch with the big wicket! Hales tries to cut his first ball but it follows him too closely (unlike Dre Russ' bouncer) and only gloves to Clarke. 3/40

Update: it turns out Brad Hodge's mohawk was stick on. Explains its rubbishness. The discussion about hockey that he and Alister Nicholson are having is far more entertaining than any shot in the last two overs.

Drinks are taken at 3/58. Need some spark soon, the Thunder. They still have Billings in and Sams and Cutting to come...

Shout! Sounded woody down the leg side from Ross, but was pad. Billings on just 7 from 14, yikes. Gets a big top edge trying to accelerate, and it lands safe. Doug The Rug's runout joke is ringing in my ears

WICKET! Billings' pained innings ends as he goes inside out and shells one to Coulter-Nile at backward point. Qais now does a Cristo de Redentor impersonation. Can he take every wicket this BBL? 4/65

Finally boundaries! Zampa serves up a half tracker dispatched by Ross, then one perfect for the Sweepologist to do his thing (not aided by a missed stop by Stoinis).

Power Surge will be overs 15 and 16. Boundary straight away by Dan Sams - nearly a six over fine leg actually! Great shot. 4/88 from 15

Ross takes a bad blow on his knee! Keeping on though.

Great shot from Sams! Sends Zampa 88 metres deep over cow. The run rate boost that was required. The replicates it two balls later! I'd say it was a carbon copy but it went six meters further.

Ross joins in! Despite the slow start today, he's in great form! And he drops Andre Russell onto the green man at cow corner. Dre isn't happy. Ross is, and he's even happier with the next ball! It's absolutely hammered back over the bowler's head for a 100 metre, third tier bomb that brings up his fifty!
THREE IN A ROW! This is "only" 84 metres but it goes over square leg. Big money for the cricket club they're donating to today....
No six sixes, but a bad misfield means another boundary! Russell looks like he wants to cry. Couch, presumably bowling the 20th, probably already is.

Six more! Not a very remarkable one by his standards as it doesn't even make the crowd but they're six runs all the same. Ross rolling.
WICKET! Sams hit those two bombs, but trying for a third from the second to last ball, he holes out to Qais at deep backward square. 5/149
Smart running from the final ball gets the Thunder to 150! The boost point is already in the Stars' hands at just 58, but a hurried final five overs with 63 coming from them have the Thunder in with a chance.

Early boundary for Stoinis! Given three dots occurred earlier in the over, that slash behind point was vital. Then duplicates it! Very nice from "The Rig" as the commentators call him.

WICKET! Dammit I was outside watching the fireworks! Clarke gets a healthy edge behind to Billings who takes a good catch. 1/15
And a very stiff LBW decision for McAndrew! He won't like that at all, and he doesn't. Probably umpires call. Larkin survives on 0.

WICKET! Larkin chips Cutting directly to mid wicket! Stars struggling a bit at 2/24. 2/27 from 5 too

Finally! Maxi sends McAndrew over the fence at midwicket and nearly drills a security guard!
DROPPED! Maxi tries to repeat and it goes into the air for miles! Sams should have gone for it coming in but Hales calls for it, running back, and drops it. Big let off.

Bad over from Cutting! He keeps overpitching without people straight back and Maxi and Stoinis cash in with three straight boundaries.

Another nice six from Maxwell, disposing with Sangha over long on! Brad Hodge accidentally says he's trying to hit every six for ball. Other way around, Hodgey

Chris Green comes on and gets the same treatment, except not quite for six! To be fair, it's harder to reverse sweep a six... Drinks at 2/77. Forgot to say the Bash Boost point was confortably the Sixers

WICKET! Stoinis holes out! Tries to nail Sangha over the fence and picks out Daniel Sams on the fence. Maxwell is the guy going but a nice support innings ends 3/83
WICKET! OR NOT! Maxwell out immediately after Stoin! He top edges a slog sweep that does well to carry to Cutting at deep long off, and no mistake is made. Sangha on a hattrick, 4/83. As a side note, a nightmare for the TV crew as they rewind the entire film of the wicket live on TV
And the hat trick ball, to Andre Russell... Dot balL! But no wicket! Unfortunate. Momentum has gone from the Stars though.

Andre Russell wishes to steal it back! He blocked the last three balls of Sangha, but cleared his front leg and struck McAndrew deep into the stands at cow corner. The treatment McAndrew's bowling deserves too methinks. Four byes later in the over thanks to a wildly seaming ball are a good benefit for the Stars. Cartwright then tries to replicate the big West Indian (not that Hilt is small) but only drops it into the outfield.

POWER SURGE! And Andre Russell's had a supercharge! A short slow ball from Sams is hammered 93m into the crowd over mid on. Momentum back with the Stars!
WHAT A SHOT! Zampa signals six from the boundary, which would be normal from the other end where he's stationed at mid wicket. He's at third man. An uppercut just went for six. Andre Russell is a cheat code at the moment. Sams responds with a wide on height. I guess it's something Russell can't hit? Brutalises it straight down the ground next for a four. 20 from the over!

A quiet first few balls, and then Russell goes down! Thankfully for him it's only Tanveer bowling as if it had been Sams, he may not be able to have any more children. Marcus Stoinis cannot control his laughter on the side, but Russell doesn't see the funny side. Nearly replicates the next ball too! Anyone remember Livingstone?
That one goes though! Just like Ross it goes into the top tier over mid wicket! Sangha dropped short and was dispatched. 102 METRES! SO LONGER THAN ROSS'S!
And then more luck for Dre! He edges into his foot and the ball rolls into the stumps, but the bails stay on! 4/125 from 15, and it's all going on!

Gilkes bobbles it in the outfield! IDK why the Thunder keep putting a keeper in the outfield, but...
IS IT OUT OR NOT? Russell slightly edges one out into the air, and Sams takes a great catch, before flicking it back. Sams appears to have stepped on the boundary though. Or not, soft signal is out! A very long video review ensures. Given how dejected Sams is, I'd be surprised if it's out... and Not Out! So it's a six!

Cartwright proves he can hit it too by flicking McAndrew high into the stand! Less theatrics than anything Dre Russ has done but equally as effective. Replicates it next ball! What a display of six hitting from Maxi, Dre and Cartwright tonight, and the cricket club that gets $500 for every six has a choice now: new equipment, or Dre Russ as they have enough money now to sign him!*
* may be exaggerated

A wide ties the score, and Cartwright then finishes it off by sending a tracer bullet whizzing past the square leg umpire and to the fence. What a game that was! A feast for batsmen with a couple tricky moments (Sangha and Qais found something), but ultimately the Stars had the quality to rebound from adversity and the Thunder didn't.

:goldo: Alex Ross - 77 (49)
:slvo: Andre Russell - 42 (21) (the less said about the bowling the better)
:bro: Qais Ahmad - 2/17 (4)

Heat XI: 1 Chris Lynn, 2 Max Bryant, 3 Ben Duckett, 4 Sam Heazlett, 5 Tom Abell, 6 Jimmy Peirson (capt/wk), 7 James Bazley, 8 Xavier Bartlett, 9 Mitchell Swepson, 10 Mujeeb Ur Rahman, 11 Liam Guthrie.

Renegades XI: 1 Sam Harper (wk), 2 Mackenzie Harvey, 3 Nic Maddinson (capt), 4 James Seymour, 5 Jake Fraser-McGurk, 6 Mohammad Nabi, 7 Will Sutherland, 8 Jack Prestwidge, 9 Kane Richardson, 10 Reece Topley, 11 Zahir Khan.

Swepson and Maddinson back in from Australia A duty, while Tom Abell making his BBL debut. Cooper and Gannon are X-Factors for the heat. Not sure about the Gades. Bring on the game.

All the Santas are out tonight. The pictures on the TV may break a few kids' hearts.

Bartlett's first ball angles right at Harvey's pads, who just glances it down to fine leg for four. Maybe Bartlett was wearing red and white before the game...

Harper giving the Heat some early thoughts! He tries to ramp and nearly puts it directly into the wickets. Ball misses bat and bat misses bails, so all is good for him.

Runs down the wicket and hits Bartlett for four! Harper looking decent when he isn't being cute. Harvey at the other end gets a great stroke of luck when an inside edge misses leg stump and hits the rope.

DROPPED! Would have been such a blinder from Heazlett at point there. Harvey blazes a cut just over him and he does well to get a hand to it and save two runs.

A quiet over from Mujeeb sees the score at 0/32 from five.

WICKET! Harper gone! Hooks Bazley directly to Mujeeb at fine leg. 1/38

Maddinson with the interesting sweep under Peirson's legs! Gets two. They're interviewing the couple who proposed at the Ashes test. May be more interesting than most of the strokes being played off Mujeeb and Swepson at the moment.

1/58 from 10. Quiet now. Will there be a Ross-esque finish or will this game be a fizzer?

Surge taken immediately. Four taken from the first Bartlett ball by Harvey, before he nearly nicks the next one. The noise is bat on ground though.
Wild ball from the fourth of the over! Lucky not to be a no ball on height. It's just a wide on line. Maddinson goes over the top of cover for four with the makeup ball.
Oh no, he does it again! This is a no ball on line! A rarity to see here. Or has it hit the pitch? Yes, only just. Only a wide. Still, an erratic over from Bartlett, who has been asked to hit the tramlines and missed every time. Harvey finishes with a boundary. 17 from it.

Falls safe! Huge top edge off Mujeeb for Maddinson but he gets enough on it to clear mid on. Still looks rusty as he wildly swings and misses at the next one. Despite one fairly wild ball that goes through the lot of them, it's a good over from Mujeeb to recover from the Bartlett disaster, just five from and 22 from the Surge overall.

WICKET! Swepson gets hit for one straight four by Maddinson, but he picks the man on the fence in trying to repeat! First wicket of BBL|11 for the leggie, 2/84

WICKET! Nabi holes out to deep square leg off Bazley! The big hits aren't going to plan for the Renegades tonight, 3/90
Harvey does better off the last ball of the over, though. He hits into the same area, but it bounces into the inner outfield and more importantly with his left handedness, it's into the wind. The resultant boundary brings up his 50.

3/98 from 15. The acceleration from the Bartlett over didn't last after Mujeeb's tight one and Maddinson's dismissal.
