Champions League Twenty20 2011

How on earth does the country that invented T20 not get an automatic qualifier? And don't get me started on not having each country represented. This tournament has lost a lot of my respect after such a promising start, a bit like the Big Bash.

ya this is really horrible to see 4 indian team and the winner of nz,eng,wi and sl have to play a qualifier match after all the tournament name is champions league .instead of this they should have made the CLT20 2 format were 12 teams were participating it 3 from india ,2 each form sa,aus and eng and 1 each teams from nz,sl and wi

Why 3 IPL teams. IPL is not better than anyother domestic tournament. There fore they should alln be equal. 2 of each country

Yes, I agree with Ahmad, every country should have equal number of teams in Champions League and India is no exception for that. This is clear partiality.

This time, Australia may host this event... Not sure.

I don't see Australia hosting this for a long time. Unfortunately no one in India or NA will be able to watch it due to time difference. Would be fun to see how subcontinental teams would do in Aus..

Fantastic BCCI , just fantastic , 4 possible Indian teams in a 10 team tournament ! Just give the trophy to an IPL side already ! :clap

Can injustice get any better than what you're seeing now?

This is stupid. Why should we have to participate in a qualifying tournament when there are three Indian teams in the tournament.

I read in TimesofIndia (remember they just blow things up) that champions league is having a hard time getting viewers and spectators for non indian teams. I guess they want make more people watch. I hope this will change once it becomes popular in India.

England has 18 teams in its t20 tournament , but has only 1 representative , while the IPL has 10 teams featuring but allows 4 to compete in the CLt20? Can you explain that part of injustice to me?

So what does having 18 domestic teams got to do with it? They don't run the tournament..ECB and English supporters should seriously stop trying to equate themselves to India. India runs the tournament, they bring in the money...and they (BCCI +ACB + CSA + sponsors) do what is best to get a return of investment. ICC T20 world cup has equal representation from all countries...so all is fine.

I wouldn't be surprised if the BCCI made it a 16 team tournament next season with all 10 ten IPL teams qualifying (maybe the bottom two sides via qualifiers :rolleyes).

Not gonna happen. IPL will lose its appeal.

I think its being done on the request of broadcasters who are demanding better teams to participate and given that IPL teams play more overseas players + the domestic players are also quite well known so it would attract more audience.

But to call it a champions league without teams from 2-3 other nations is stupid. I hope this idea is scrapped.

I hope this will change once tournament gets more popular and other teams become strong. NZ and SL teams have been push overs.

I love how no Pakistani team will be in attendance, in either the actual tournament itself, nor the qualifier.

Hmm? 4 IPL teams, yet no Pakistani.

Blatant discrimination.

No discrimination. If Pak comes then there are some politicians who will cause trouble. Also Ijaz Butt has been eccentric in the past.... PAK has great players and it is unfortunate that we will not get to see them any time soon.

This is however meant to be a Champions League, which is meant to be a serious event, not some pajama party run by the BCCI like the IPL is.

It is a serious "private" event. CSA, AUS and BCCI want to make money. The tournament needs to first get popular before it can be a truly Champions league. ICC had a champions tournament and no one really cared about that. It is vital that this does not happen to this.

Firstly the ICC need to grow a pair and say that the home players are going to play for their home country, none of this ████ that happened with CD last year where the only reason they got their (Taylor) wasn't even playing. (It also didn't help that their two best bowlers Napier and Oram were injured)

ICC does not make Champions league decisions. Also IPL teams compensate local teams. I think this system is better. If IPL does not compensate teams and if players had liberty to play for any team, I am confident players would choose IPL for money.

That's crap. It doesn't matter if it's run by CSA, AUS, and BCCI, the ICC sanction it so it has to be performed in an official way. My whole point is the ICC should make the Champions League decisions, because atm why do you even call it a Champions League when you have a team finishing 4th out of ten teams there. The ICL was also a "private" event, but the ICC didn't sanction it, so they could do whatever they wanted, but this is meant to be an official tournament which they have made a gap in the international cricket calender for it for the next eight years, so the ICC should take control.

----------

And the IPL/BCCI don't give a crap about the local teams, Central Districts still haven't been paid since the last Champions League.

I mentioned before IPL teams 3 and 4 are in there to bring more Indian audience. I do not agree with it. But ESPN is not stupid to give 1billion $ for something that is so new. They want to get a return of investment. The problem is Indian audience do not get interested when two non-indian teams meet, especially when they play bad cricket (Wayamba vs CD). There is hope since last year the match with the highest TRP in India involved the warriors (SA) and some other foreigh team. I hope and I do want teams 3 and 4 kicked out once CL becomes more popular (5 years). I don't even think the no.2 team from AUS/SA/Ind should get a chance. Should be a tournament only for winners.

I know the tournament is currently unfair but the key is to first make sure money flows in and the concept settles in with the biggest market. The last time CL was in India almost every stadium was empty.

BTW patience is the key (both for payment and for a real champions tournament).

What do you expect from a team who's best player and really the only reason they managed to get gets poached by his IPL side, while on top of that their two best bowlers are out injured?

I guarantee a full strength Auckland side will be able to put up a good showing this year, but atm it looks like two out of our three overseas players are going to only be boarderline on whether they can play for us, because of how well their respective English counties are doing.

Ross taylor in CL
DNB, 46 (not a match winning innings), 9, 4 (in semi final)

You did not miss much :D

In any case losing 1 batsman does not justify this. Even if ross had scored 46+9+4, they would have still lost :D

Since when does inventing a sport guarantee a spot?

This time Champions League will be played in India and the final will be at Chennai.

3rd tournament in India this year. Really want it to be in England for a change so I can go watch it. This FriendsLife is no fun. Only plus is they have Pakistani players:). Not the atmosphere you get in Asian countries or the buzz

You seem to have conveniently left out that they also lost in the LAST OVER twice as well. It definitely would have made a massive difference if Ross was playing for CD. I'd say the loss of their two best bowlers Oram and Napier was slightly bigger than the loss of Taylor though, because except Mason none of their bowlers had any international experience, and most of them had only made their debuts that season or the one before.

I highly doubt RT would have made a difference. He is a horrible IPL finisher... Also I think he is quite overrated as a finisher in ODI cricket. He is a brilliant batsman though. Who is this guy Napier? Never heard about him. All I see on google is Graham Napier who is a batsman.

Napier is probably one of the best t20 players in England, I cant understand how he doesn't get picked.

It would be nice if there was a tournament where there would be one qualifier from each country but I guess thats not the way BCCI does things. I could care less really I dont watch any twenty20 unless its international but it would be sad for no New Zealand team to be in it. I reckon Auckland could actually give it a real good shot.
