Story Club Life - The Diary of a County Cricketer [C2007]

wow amazing results for you so far Evo, you should be in the england squad

Amazing. 4.25 runs per wicket and clearly at the top. Lancashire are dominating.

Can't wait to see you back in action Matthew! Keep up your terrific form

The Home of Cricket

May 7th 2007 - What a place to play a cricket match. I'm in the squad today to play Middlesex at none other than Lords. Now in my brief career i've already played at illustrious venues such as Headingley and Old Trafford, but none of those have the history behind them that Lords possesses. I practised my bowling near the nursery end before the game and I was overwhelmed with a sense of excitement over the fact that I was playing in this prestigious venue. Hopefully it wouldn't be long before I was wearing an England shirt in this arena.

A beautiful view of the Lords Mound stand.

As for the game itself, I would be batting at 6 which i'm not all that comfortable with in an OD game. I'd rather come at 3 or 4 myself but oh well, it's not up to me?

A strong looking line-up which should overpower Middlesex.

6 is a good position for you Matt, gives you a chance to hit out in the later overs :D

Good luck. Very strong line-up there for Lancashire. Looking foward to it.

Could be tough batting first but, with you and Freddie you could really cash in in the last 10 overs if you keep wickets in hand.

Missing a Chance

May 7th 2007 - Flippin' heck I ruined it! At the very least I should be celebrating a 50 here but instead I have to make do with 42. I felt in magnificent nick out there today and even though I only hit one boundary - a towering six - I still felt brilliant out there. The fact that I was batting with Fred allowed me to just nick singles and let him do the attacking.

Are you watching Kev?; KP would have been proud of this.

It was a shame that my first loose shot came to a Styris slower ball which saw me loop a catch to Ed Joyce in the covers. I was visibly gutted at throwing my wicket away but given that the lads scored 293 on a tough Lords pitch, I shouldn't feel too bad about it.

Out-2.jpg

You can tell by my reaction how devastated I was.

With runs on the board and the pitch deteriorating, we were surely favourites to win this game. If we bowl anything like we have been doing so far this season then we'll win in no time.

A team effort; Nobody went on to bigger things but everyone who batted contributed.

Don't worry Matt, 2 top class batsman didn't get half centuries either; Law and Flintoff. A very good team effort by Lancashire, now bloody bowl well :p

Hey, what was that you said about Freddie in the rep. He got handy runs there. 293 should be a good enough total to able to see out this match. I always get them dismissals to cover, they're really annoying, especially in OD's.

Am loving the massive slog sweep.

Leaking Runs

May 7th 2007 - Well first things first, we won and that's all that matters. As for me, well the less said the better really. I was hammered for 46 runs in my 8 overs despite taking the first wicket to fall. It started off swimmingly with me again striking in my first over by breaking an impressive innings from Ed Smith. Smith hit my first ball for four but the second was an in-swinging low full-toss which castled his leg-stump.

The Breakthrough! Sadly it all went downhill from here.

That was pretty much the only plus side of my bowling today. I was wayward, in-disciplined and I showed my first signs of inexperience. Hopefully today was just a blip and my previous performances will ensure that I survive the chop from Watto the gaffer.

It's testament to the lads that even though I was erratic today, they still won convincingly by 78 runs;

The result is what matters and it couldn't have gone much better from a team perspective.

Despite my bad figures, that's a very solid bowling card.
