Commonwealth Bank Series Feb-Mar 2011/12

No love for Dave Hussey? I'd be disappointed if he didn't make our T20 and ODI squads. Definitely take him over White and Smith.

He's been okay without being a must have, Id rather go with a younger fella. However if the selectors are desperately after a spinning all rounder then fair enough however once Maxwell returns I'd have him take his spot.

Yeah at 34 Dave's pushing it, but I've always trusted him to deliver with bat or ball, unlike others. Plenty of time and opportunities for the Faulkners, Maxwells and Smiths to break into the ODI team I reckon.

Don't really see the point of Dussey after we had got rid of him. Would have preferred Ferguson with a view to the WC.
Forrest definitely more a view for the Test side.

Anyway only the side for the first 3 ODIs so hopefully Ferguson gets a look in for the next squad.

Be a bit strange to only have that side for the first 3 ODI's. It means Mitch Marsh is there purely for PR purposes - young gun status and all that - as he is not joining the squad till the third ODI.

Glad that McKay is getting another chance. I'm not really a fan of his but he has an immense record so far in ODI's and it's stupid not to find out if he's of real merit. He's only 27 or so.

I think India has a really good chance of winning the ODI series,
the ODI team looks a lot more balanced,
Yadav should not play the ODIs, he should be given a break and he anyways lacks that control required to succeed in the shorter formats.

My ODI XI would be

Sachin
Sehwag
Gambhir
Kohli
Raina/Rohit Sharma
Dhoni
Jadeja
Irfan
Praveen
Ashwin
Zaheer

Dussey is in the KFC ads right? I can well believe the selectors were overruled by a sponsor...

Jadeja wouldn't be a good pick because we use him in our pitches mostly because of the dry tracks.

My XI

Sehwag
Sachin
Gambhir
Kohli
Rohit
Raina
Dhoni
Irfan
Ashwin
Zaheer
Praveen

Why isn't David Hussey in the squad? He played so well in the QF.

Where is the 11th player? I think we are allowed 11 players.:D Put Raina in there at No.6 (edited your above team in the quote). Also where is Yadav? I would play Yadav in place of Irfan. We already have a swing bowler in Praveen and Zaheer can swing it too. We need someone with raw pace. And, I think four bowlers plus the all round capabilities of Kohli and Raina (and Sehwag) should be more than enough.

Sachin needs to find form quickly. If he can reprise the form from the last CB series, India will win this one. But seeing how our test players are mentally drained after shattering losses, I think Sachin could struggle.

Most media reports are saying it is, it definitely isn't the squad for the whole series as Ponting, Hussey and Clarke will be getting rested and Haddin more than likely will be returning along with Watson.

I always for the no.11 :facepalm

Agree about McKay, he seems the prototype back of a length ODI bowler with a good slower ball - he's just as good as Hastings ever was IMHO.

As for Mitch Marsh, yes I think the selectors have a bit of indecision here. For the 2nd time, the selectors have named 9 top 7 players in a squad vs 5 8-11s. They have again picked both M.Marsh and Dan Christian when I would venture that they are very unlikely to play together, certainly in ODIs - maybe in T20s they could play both as more bowling options are often handy in T20. But in some ways I just wish they'd pick one or the other.

According to Ryobi cup form Forrest has cored 176 from 6 games @ 29 with one half century and was not amongst the top run scorers in the big bash league either. So i'm most certainly perplexed at this form the selectors are speaking of ahead of Cal Ferguson who is the 2nd highest run scorer to date in the Ryobi cup..

I'd agree - I like Ferguson as a better player long term than Forrest. But...Inverarity specifically said Ferguson isn't batting well currently. This is what happens when you insert a Big Bash into the middle of your calendar. Ryobi Cup form gets thrown out the window because it's old news - happened months ago now.

You're getting in early - it's 3+ years away :D If that were the plan, then turf Ponting and M.Hussey.

I think perhaps the selectors are keen to have a 2nd spin option in the XI. Steve Smith was that guy until the WC semi final. You mentioned Maxwell could be that option in the future. Michael Clarke would have been considered, but he bowls the same stuff as Doherty so that's a negative for that idea.

An interesting question will be the Aus batting order. No Shaun Marsh or Shane Watson or Brad Haddin - the 3 most regular openers of late. Dave Warner will get one of those spots. Who gets the other? Wade is probably the favourite I guess, as Haddin can come back and slot straight back in at the top. Another option is Ricky Ponting who I've always said should open in ODIs. Then Clarke could come up to #3 followed by a couple of Husseys and Marsh/Christian at 6, then Wade. Forrest looks like the bench warmer at this stage.

Not just me, Invers has already stated the selectors are looking at the WC, see the press conference it was his opening statement. Basically he said they are bringing in younger inexperienced players but mixing it with experienced players. Hence keeping Ponting, Hussey and Lee. But I don't see the need for Dussey for experience especially when you add Clarke to that mix. As you say if it is for the spinning all rounder spot then fair enough but his experience is surplus to requirements.
