Commonwealth Bank Series Feb-Mar 2011/12

Agree about McKay, he seems the prototype back of a length ODI bowler with a good slower ball - he's just as good as Hastings ever was IMHO.

As for Mitch Marsh, yes I think the selectors have a bit of indecision here. For the 2nd time, the selectors have named 9 top 7 players in a squad vs 5 8-11s. They have again picked both M.Marsh and Dan Christian when I would venture that they are very unlikely to play together, certainly in ODIs - maybe in T20s they could play both as more bowling options are often handy in T20. But in some ways I just wish they'd pick one or the other.

An interesting question will be the Aus batting order. No Shaun Marsh or Shane Watson or Brad Haddin - the 3 most regular openers of late. Dave Warner will get one of those spots. Who gets the other? Wade is probably the favourite I guess, as Haddin can come back and slot straight back in at the top. Another option is Ricky Ponting who I've always said should open in ODIs. Then Clarke could come up to #3 followed by a couple of Husseys and Marsh/Christian at 6, then Wade. Forrest looks like the bench warmer at this stage.

You are not wrong about Mitch Marsh. First he was in the PM's 11, then he was pulled from that for the T20s, then they 'pick' him for the ODI's but only for the third so he can play Shield? WTF is that about?

I'm a big fan of Marsh's, but I'd genuinely like to see Christian get a decent run to see if he's up to it. He should be hitting his prime age for being a real contributor.

I would play Yadav in place of Irfan. We already have a swing bowler in Praveen and Zaheer can swing it too. We need someone with raw pace. And, I think four bowlers plus the all round capabilities of Kohli and Raina (and Sehwag) should be more than enough.

I think Yadav should should not be in the ODI XI, he lacks control and bowls too many loose deliveries, Irfan will be a much better choice, it doesn't matter if we play 3 swing bowlers as long as they can be more effective.

If Yadav picks up wickets, I wouldn't mind him going for 6-7 runs per over. Irfan, Zaheer and Praveen are pretty much too close in terms of the average speed that they bowl, and also that all three are swing bowlers. At least one guy from our three seamers in the XI should be a fast bloke who can hurry the batsman and also use the bouncer effectively on such hard pitches. If Aaron was available, I would have picked Aaron so that Yadav can be preserved. But now that Aaron isnt available, Yadav needs to play.

You'd say the same about Lee and Johnson, but they were both far better in ODIs.

Don't think Lee lacks control,
and Johnson bowls with a much different approach in ODIs, he adapts really well to the shorter formats,
on the other hand, Yadav is too raw at the moment and he leaks way too many runs compared to someone like Johnson, he has struggled even in the domestic limited overs matches, picking him just because he bowls quicker wouldn't make sense.

Johnson's only been better in ODIs this last year, before that his best was always seen in Tests. Anyway, Lee and Johnson have different roles. Lee bowls with the new ball when the field is up, Johnson bowls first change with the field back. Old Brett Lee used to spray them around, but he made up for that his pace and if his first spell was 4 overs 1/30 then that was fine. New Brett Lee is much better with his control.

So if Yadav bowls first change (after Ashwin?) then he'll get the protection he needs and it will let him bowl as a mid overs strike bowler, like Mitch J has done for Australia in the last couple of years. Depends who he plays with really as to whether that will fit in with India's plans.

There is no harm in playing 3 swing bowlers if they are good enough.
Yadav isn't even ready for international cricket, he might have bowled a couple of good spells in the tests, but he still needs time. Atleast he should have a reasonable amount of control to be selected in the shorter formats.

Yadav, Ishant and Shreeshanth should be kept away from ODIs and later on even ZAK!
But he is much economical than those 3.

WHAT??? Not ready for international cricket? This attitude has not let us develop true genuine fast bowlers. Going behind control with such stubborn-ness is not good. Yadav has shown immense potential in the recent two test series he has played (against WI and in Australia). And he is not going to improve by playing matches in domestic cricket. Our domestic system only helps identify players. It does not improve players because of the gulf between our domestic and international cricket.

And, how many bowlers can we preserve for test cricket? We need ODI bowlers too, and some really quick ones at that. Tomorrow if Varun Aaron has a good time in test cricket, will you say Varun Aaron also has to be preserved for tests? Some guys can handle all formats. We just have to try them out. Yadav did well in the ODI's against WI at home on subcontinent wickets. I expect him to do better in the ODI's in Australia on livelier wickets.

^Agree.

Just been watching a bit of the women's match happening as a curtain raiser to the main one. Pitch looks a bit slow and the outfield is pretty damp because it was raining earlier today, and for the last few days. Worth trying the 2 spinners for the Aussies if you ask me, and use M.Marsh/Christian as your 3rd seamer. Wet outfield may be a turn off for spin though, we'll see. Be interesting to see how they fit Warner/S.Marsh/Finch/Birt/D.Hussey into the top 4. On form, Marsh misses out, but I think he deserves a go here, maybe rest D.Hussey because if 2 spinners are played then his bowling possibly won't be needed much - plus Hussey will get his chances in the ODI series too unlike S.Marsh. Then your 5/6/7 has to be Bailey, M.Marsh/Christian, Wade.

India win the loss and elect to bowl first, the mistakes just continue to pile up.
