Commonwealth Bank Series Feb-Mar 2011/12

I agree with Sai. India should go with two spinners. By the way, last game was fantastic one and I honestly felt, Mathews should have been awarded Man of the Match award as he scored more runs and also took 2 very important wickets. Why would Clarke be given the award, Just because his team won? Aah, ICC should be more practical in awarding such awards.

India's big problem is batting. They need to be making good scores, or be confident of it. However, Tiwary is really the only one left to offer and you could make a case that Pathan can't bat any worse than the middle order has done so far. If it's anticipated that Raina will succumb to short pitched bowling, you could maybe drop him and move Jadeja up. Don't move Dhoni up because it's just so awful to watch him try to bat responsibly.

However, Pathan is a very sideways trade for Vinay Kumar and while Jadeja might fit in the middle, it would seem a bit forced to use Pathan as anything more than a pinch hitter (Though I guess it would be even more ridiculous to use Jadeja as a pinch hitter). What's more is that Vinnie is as yet the only bowler to get wickets in all matches; some guys have had a good one and a bad one, so he's earned his third game better than most. The turmoil of turning the side inside out in search of the right balance might also be counter-productive; better to make subtle changes.

If the bowling really needs anything, I would say it's the pace of Yadav. Indeed such a side might best rely on six decent bowlers.

I would play this lineup for the next match

V.Sehwag
S.Tendulkar
G.Gambhir
V.Kohli
R.Sharma
M.S.Dhoni
I.Pathan
R.Ashwin
U.Yadav
Z.Khan
P.Kumar

I would play 5 specialist bowlers with Pathan and Ashwin able to bat when needed. Vinay Kumar has done a pretty good job and I would rest him for the next 2 matches

I know it's a little bit late, but with regards to the Brett Lee injury - he's 35 years old, I reckon it's time to say thanks for your wonderful service this past decade, but there's no point in holding the younger fellas back any longer.

With our depth of fasting bowling talent, is it really worth keeping Brett Lee around after his injury? Me thinks not.

That is so not going to be Dhoni's Playing XI. I don't think removing Vinay would be a fair call, he bowled better than PK in both the ODIs

I don't think they are going to change winning side. We might go with the same team.

Feels good to be able to sit back and not give a damn who's picked or rested for Australia, while your opponents scramble to put together a team capable of winning.

In saying that, I wouldn't mind Forrest coming in for Punter, M. Marsh for Dave and maybe Hilfy for Harris. 1 or 2 of the 3 should happen anyways.

I feel runs coming from Warners bat tomorrow.i hope he'll do better
India well beat SL it may have given some confidence but SL aren't seem to be adjusted here right now.India's batting is still a concern after watching their batsmen throwing wickets away when they were top on the game,it could had ended the opposite way.Australia are again gonna be a difficult team to beat for India as indian batsmen haven't been comfortable against them

I think the reason for Lee remaining is that the other young bowlers aren't really proven ODI bowlers yet. Talking Pattinson, Cummins, Hilf, Siddle here. None of those guys have done anything much of note in ODI cricket and you could argue that they shouldn't even play limited overs cricket at this stage - to preserve themselves for Tests and make sure they aren't wasting their time learning to bowl slower balls, containing lengths etc.

It can be argued that there are other young bowlers that could play instead of Lee eg. McDermott, Coulter-Nile, Faulkner etc. but how many young bowlers does Australia need? What is the ultimate aim here? Because I think Lee's still a better bowler than any of those guys.

Resting Sachin is a double edged sword. The best chance for him to get into his best flow is to play matches. But resting him now and not during the final stages of the league stage is also important.

Yeah there's plenty of arguments floating around about this rotation thing. Basically if your team loses people hate it, but if your team wins then it's genius. Same as usual... I see a great amount of good to be gained from playing the younger guys. There aren't many chances for Indians to play in Australia and this is a good one to learn about Australian grounds, pitches, outfields, crowds etc. I'd be rotating the old guys out as much as I dared if I were Fletcher. I think though with 8 games before the finals, EVERY player could get 2 or 3 games off and you're still playing plenty of cricket.

The 12 has already been named. Hilfy's been sent home, and Mr Cricket is resting. So it's 11 of: Warner, Wade, Ponting, Clarke, D.Hussey, Forrest, Christian, M.Marsh, Harris, McKay, Starc and Doherty. One of those first 8 to miss out: so it's Forrest vs M.Marsh to take Mike Hussey's spot for the day.

Yeah Hilfy might've missed his chance with the ryobi cup and shield games for Tassie coming up. Still an opportunity to play the last 3 games before the finals, but probably not unless there's an injury.

I figured Marsh, Dave and Christian would all be fighting for two spots. Christian deserves another game and he should know Adelaide well. Dave's part time spin could come in handy, but I don't see Marsh missing out somehow.

Reading the discussions of Australian fans talking about test bowlers being preserved for tests and using different containing bowlers for ODI's, I think India should adopt a similar route and try to find bowlers who can bowl specifically for ODI's and preserve the test bowlers purely for the tests. I would say Zaheer Khan is one guy who needs to be preserved completely for the tests. He is such a lynchpin of our test attack. Same with Ishant Sharma which our selectors are rightly doing by not including him in the ODI's and T20's. Maybe preserve Yadav too for tests, also Sreesanth. I think Varun Aaron can be a good ODI bowler. Saw him bowl in a few IPL games and he seemed to have the skill to tie batsmen down with his bowling. Vinay Kumar if used should be purely an ODI/T20 bowler. With Praveen Kumar, I am confused. If its conditions like England, take him for the tests too. Else, keep him just for the ODI's. He can keep the runs down, bowl tight and also pick wickets when conditions help him.

Our test fast bowling pool - Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, S Sreesanth

Our ODI/T20 fast bowling pool - Praveen Kumar, Varun Aaron, Vinay Kumar, Irfan Pathan

Find one more guy for both sides and we can have seperate fast bowling pools for different formats. And maybe do the same with spinners. Keep Ashwin and Jadeja for the ODI and T20 formats. And have Harbhajan and Ojha for test format.

Makes no sense to name MM and Forrest in the squad only to not play them. So I'm guessing Christian will make way for MM and Forrest will take Hussey spot.

Sai, there's also Munaf Patel who's been bowling excellently in ODIs over the past 2 years.

I dont want him anywhere near the team because of his attitude on the field and towards fielding. He is such a lazy nut and it spreads around the team when he plays. Even in our current team, we have some slackers like Zaheer and Ashwin but these guys dont give away a body language of being slack. They make their earnest attempt and yet fail. But Munaf most often shows lack of concern and the attitude of not caring about his weakness on the field.

Yeah I was thinking Mitch and Dave might edge Christian out anyways and now I see that SA has a shield game starting tomorrow, so probably more reason to leave him out as has been the trend recently.
