Michael Hussey was born on May 27,1975

Ashes Stats:

1304 runs at the average of 54.33

Michael Hussey aka Mr Cricket. The first to practice and the last to leave, Hussey certainly gave himself every chance of doing well.In just 166 days he become the fastest player to 1000 Test runs.In Ashes 2010-11 he was the only player alongside Cook who scored more than 500 runs but his effort went into vain as Australia lost the series by the margin of 3-1.Hussey scored 4 centuries against England and two of came in his last ever Ashes Series, He also scored his career best in The Ashes 2010 and was unlucky to miss out on his first double century.

Michael Clarke

Michael Clarke was born on April 2,1981

Ashes Stats:

1746 runs at the average of 40.60

Michael Clarke made his debut for New South Wales as an 18 year old boy.He made his Ashes debut on 2nd July 2005.Clarke form was very poor in The Ashes 2005 but in The Ashes 2006/07 he scored 389 runs at the average of 77.80 and he also scored 2 centuries as Australia whitewashed England. In The Ashes 2009 he was the highest run scorer for Australia but his effort went in vain as Australia lost the series. When Punter stood down from the captaincy of the Australian Test Side after the 2011 World Cup,Clarke was appointed as his permanent replacement. He is currently the only batsman in Australian Cricket Team having a 50 average in test cricket.

I had him in my mind....

haha oops

I absolutely loved watching him as I grew up (a keeper batsman myself) and it wasn't because he was the best behind the stumps or the most fluent with the bat, it's because he was the grittiest cricketer I've ever seen. Never say die!

The thing which made me not pick him was his Ashes stats although I loved watching him too and as far as I know , he did opened the innings with Gooch.

OK so we've had a server wipe :( Anything in the last day or 2 hasn't been saved. But I can update everyone, all is not lost!

Samuels picked John Edrich & Johnny Briggs
Sulaiman picked Bob Cowper and tried to pick John Edrich again :lol So we need one more player from him.

After we get that mystery player from Sulaiman, then it'll be Fenil's turn, as I think KrishnamurthiN won't be participating from here on out. Don't wait for him anyway.

If anyone has something they've written, but lost, try typing draft ashes history into google, along with the name of the player you wrote about. From the google results, you should be able to access the cached page - and hopefully it's got what you posted! I did that with my Monty Noble and Wilfred Rhodes writeups, and I'll add them back shortly.

I did pick someone but now I don't remember who it was....:(

Oh Bob Simpson it is. :D

My players: Bob Cowper & Bob Simpson

Bob Cowper

Ashes stats : Batting average 49.00, Mathces 9 , Runs 686 , wickets 10, BBI 4/48 , bowling average 31.70

Bob_Cowper_Graph.png

Bob Cowper , one of the most under rated Aussie player , although he had a massive batting average as he played only 27 test matches in his brief career. He was an awe-inspiring all rounder , a man who was fit in every condition , not only he was a magnificent player but a ravishing captain as well.

*He had 82.16 batting average in Australia, his home.

Bob Simpson

049866.jpg

Ashes stats: Matches 19 , runs 1405 , highest score 311 , Bat Av 50.17.

The average speaks of itself , he's one of the guys who come after Sir Don Bradman , he had achieved everything. He was a magnificent opener and a vice-captain , he was a bowlers nightmare , a pure classy batsman , he was a magnificent captain too (not only vice-captain probably). He was a very slow player , wasn't too eager and was resistant to any mistakes but he sometimes got unlucky.

1. Geoff Boycott
2. Bob Sipmson
3. Allan Border
4.
5. Bob Cowper
6.
7.
8.
9. Sydney Barnes
10. Dennis Lillee
11. George Lohmann

I'll pick the two legends known for completely different playing style. While one was named by a journalist as a corpse with pads on for being the most rigidly self-denying batsman of his generation, the other might not have the greatest of Ashes records but he was certainly one of the best ever batsmen. They are: Bill Lawry and Kunwar Shri Ranjitsinhji.

----------

My lineup looks pretty solid now.

Herbert Sutcliffe
Bill Lawry
KS Ranji
?
Steve Waugh :c:
?
Keith Miller
?
Fred Trueman
Bob Willis
?

That's a very steady opening combination Fenil :p Some might say sleep inducing :D Would be tough to get out though, Lawry's done some great work vs England.

Only 1 bowler picked this round...a run on batsmen.

----------------------------------------------
:eng: Derek Underwood
Bowling speared-in spinners, Derek Underwood was, on a helpful wicket, "Deadly". When conditions weren't in his favour, he was merely excellent. In 86 Test matches, he claimed nearly three hundred wickets, and 88 of those wickets were against the old enemy. He is arguably the best left-arm spinner the world has ever seen, and some of his best performances have come in Ashes Tests. He is another unique bowler to sit alongside Jeff Thompson as a strike spearhead.
----------------------------------------------
:aus: Mark Taylor
"Tubby" Taylor was not a legendary batsman. He did not play with the assurance of Bradman or the panache of Sobers. What he was was dependable. In Ashes Tests, he scored a fifty one in three times that he went out to bat, and he, not Steve Waugh, was the real man for a crisis in Australian cricket. He was a truly selfless cricketer, who once declared the innings to stop himself getting a record that he believed belonged to Don Bradman. He is exactly the man who will make my team hard to beat.
----------------------------------------------

I will go for Justing Langer and Les Ames. Will do the writing later. Just for a tease, this is how my line-up looks so far.

:aus: Justin Langer

justin-langer-batting-at-taunton.jpg

Ashes Statistics: Matches: 21. Runs: 1658. Average: 50.24. Centuries: 5. Highest Ashes score: 250

Justin Langer was not one of the preatiest players to watch in the star studed Australian line-up. He was never a dashing stroke maker as his opening partner Matthew Hayden but he was a grafter. He knew how to fight hard and battle for his runs. Justin Langer made his Ashes debut in 1998/99 series in the very first test. He scored a decent half century in the 2nd inning. He also ended up as the 3rd highest run scorer for that series scoring 436 runs at an average of 48.44. This series also ended up as his best ashes series. Langer scored 423 runs at an average 52.87 in 2002/03 series. He ended his ashes career in 2007 ashes series after Australia whitewashed England.

Justing Langer's highest score in the test

Justing Langer's last hundred in tests

:eng: Les Ames

99920.jpg

99938.jpg

Ashes Statistics: Matches: 17. Runs:675. Average: 27. Centuries: 1. Highest Ashes score: 120

Les Ames has been described as the greatest-wicketkeeper batsman the game has ever seen. None of us have seen him bat live to decide how true it is. Especially when the comparison goes with Adam Gilchrist who is certainly the best wicketkeeper-batsman I have seen in my life. However Les Ames has a fantastic first class record to prove it. Les played 593 FC matches and scored overs 37000 runs. He has 102 centuries and 176 half centuries to go along with it. That is some serious run scoring. As a wicketkeeper, he also has 703 catches with 418 stumping. His international record was also decent but his ashes record is nothing special. He has only one century against Australia in his 17 matches against them. Although his record is not that great against Australia, you can't deny his batting ability.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo! There isn't any legendry wicket-keeper left. :rolleyes

Oh wait....I am wrong. -_-

Neil Harvey and Charles Macartney

cricketers-5.jpg

Harvey's Ashes record

Between scoring a hundred on his debut in the famous 1948, Leeds, Ashes test & scoring 154 in his penultimate test in the 192/63 Ashes - Harvey established himself as the premier AUS batsman of the immediate post war era.

And its not a over-exaggeration or insult to players like Border, Hill, Hayden, M Hussey, Langer, Lawry namely to say he is was easily the best of most stylish among the top left-handed batsman that AUS has ever produced.

250px-CGMacartney.jpg

Ashes record

Macartney is another example of a player whose worth is a bit forgotten over time. Called the "Governor general", 1922 wisden cricketer of the year, best friends with the legendary Vic Trumper and Bradman himself called him a inspiration growing up.

With 5 of of 7 test hundreds in Ashes battles, he stood up well vs the old enemy. One of those hundreds in the 1926 ashes, 151 in 172 minutes is ranked as one of the most brutal Ashes hundreds - Big-time brutality

Some more good names disappearing...was hoping Tubby Taylor might fly under the radar. His 1989 series was fantastic. Even if most of his other series weren't nearly as successful, he still goes down as an important part of Ashes history in my book. He's a bit little Alastair Cook in that way - one big Ashes series, average in the other ones.

I notice everyone has at least 2 pre-WW2 players in their team thus far, so we should all be able to reach 3 by the time 11 players are picked.

And keep the writeups coming, I always learn something from these draft threads :thumbs
