Glenn Mcgrath, one of the best pace bowler to have ever played. He didn't have the speed to terrorize the batsman but he had just enough in him to trouble all the batsmen he played against. His World cup stats say it all,

Over-all World Cup Stats:

Mat: 39
Wickets: 71 (Highest Wicket taker in World cup History)
Bowl Avg: 18.19
Bowl S/R: 27.5
BBI: 7/15 (World Record)
E/R: 3.96
5w: 1

In the game which is batsmen friendly, Mcgrath not only picked up wickets but also controlled scoring from one end. He was also awarded the Man of the tournament in 2007 World cup for his splendid contribution in Australia's Hattrick World Cup Title.

My World Cup XI:

1.Rameez Raja
2.Stephen Fleming
3.Mahela Jayawardene

Matthew Hayden

Not a tired, old man surely. One of the most feared batsmen and can destroy any bowling attack at will. An average of almost 52 in all his WC innings along with a fearsome strike rate of 93 makes Hayden deadly dangerous at the top of the order. No wonder he joins my team as an opener.

Lol, you can't find a more mis-leading pic of Hayden. He looks like a tired, old man kneeling in a fetal position. The truth is the complete opposite :D

Very nice pick in Glenn McGrath, obvious first pick among bowlers.

Agree - in fact I would argue McGrath is the best World Cup player ever. He's the first guy I'd pick in an open draft. He's won 3 of them for starters, has the most wickets, hasn't inflated his record by doing disproportionately well against the minnows, and he's stepped up in some big moments. What more do you want?

^ A couple of 100's :p

@mohit 7/15 is World Cup record, not the World Record

We're not going to finish before the World Cup anyways. I think that was always wishful thinking. However, Gazza (and Cricketman before him) has been holding up this draft. If he doesn't have enough time, he should take himself out and give his place to someone who does.

Gazza's got 4hrs 17mins to make a pick, then the line starts moving again with shravi.

I pick the masterful Shane Warne as he is the best spinner left without having to settle for less. I could have gone for another Australian spinner but he supported, rather than lead the attack. Warne has 4 four-fors compared to his 2 (and Warne has bowled in 3 less innings than him). The Australian round is a hard one because there are so many choices but I went with Warne to plan ahead and I'm sure that there will be some very good or even excellent Australian cricketers left behind for the best of the rest round, so it's fine. Now, getting to his stats. In 17 matches, he took 32 wickets at 19.50 with 4 four-fors, going at 3.83RPO (which is pretty damn good for a leg spinner). He reached 2 World Cup finals and was on the winning side in one of them.

Glenn Turner ('75, '79, '83- 612 runs, 61 average, 2 hundreds, 2 fifties)
Marvan Atapattu ('99, '03- 521 runs, 43 average, 2 hundreds, 3 fifties)

* Imran Khan ('75, '79, '83, '87, '92- 666 runs @ 35, 34 wickets @ 19)
Shane Warne ('96, '99- 32 wickets at 19.50)

Yeah - Warne DEFINITELY. As you say he carried a lot of the attack and performed in the really big games: the 2 semi finals and the final v Pakistan. 3 MOMs from those 3 games.

And like you say, I think you need to take a good spinner while you can, there might be a few floating around in round 11 but I wouldn't want to bank on it. Makes it a bit tricky to plan ahead really. Taking a keeper somewhere is the one I can't decide on yet.
