Draft time: World Cup history - ALL FINISHED!!

you're welcome to join, this will be a good way to get you more informed about the great history of cricket :thumbs

But Mohit has already taken player 4, so please choose another.

I've been thinking about my possible team combination - is it ok if I move to no.2?

Have to make it difficult don't ya :D As Angry says though, no one else has claimed #2 yet so that's fine. It means the player 3 slot will now be available again for anyone else who wants it.

And I believe we now have our 10 players, which means that we can get started - HUZZAH! We know who's got the first 2 picks: riz7khan12, then Papa_Smurf. But until those picks are made, if you have a preference for where you'd like to fit in the draft order you can still let me know. Players 3,5,7,8,9 & 10 are still available. Right now the #3 pick is vacant, so if the first 2 picks are made and no one has chosen that #3 position, then I'll just assign the rest of the player numbers randomly.

That would be right. Assign them the slots randomly who havent chose yet. I want this to start soon.... :p

OK so we can officially start this. I'll fill in the rest of the picking order as we go, but for now riz7khan12 has the first pick in the New Zealand round!

And while I'm at it, by way of introduction for Round 1 how about a little spiel about New Zealand's World Cup history?

New Zealand have competed in all 9 World Cups and have made it to the semi-finals an impressive 5 times. In fact, only Australia has made more World Cup semi-finals (6), although a couple of other teams have also made 5 semis. But as all Kiwi fans know, unfortunately NZ has lost everyone of those 5 semis. Here are the details of how they have fared in each World Cup:
1975 - Semi Finalist (beaten by West Indies)
1979 - Semi Finalist (beaten by England)
1983 - Eliminated in 1st round
1987 - Eliminated in 1st round
1992 - Semi Finalist (beaten by Pakistan)
1996 - Quarter Finalist (beaten by Australia)
1999 - Semi Finalist (beaten by Pakistan)
2003 - Eliminated in Super Sixes round
2007 - Semi Finalist (beaten by Sri Lanka)

I guess you are targeting "Sir Vivian Richard" :spy

Nah - it wasn't him specifically, just that having the first Windies pick would really help - especially considering it's one of the later rounds.

Another reason was that I'm so excited to start, I wanted to be one of the first ones to start the draft :D

So come on rizzy - get us started!

I knew that both the Aussies and the Kiwi's led the race in the semi-final berths, but who else has reached the semi's 5 times? I'm guessing the Windies are one of them.

Wow, had no idea Windies was behind Pak at that particular aspect. Interesting thing to note - Aus is the only one who has won every single semi they've ever been in. I guess champs are champs.

Where are you riz... Lets get the party started :P

Martin Crowe

Arguably one of the best batsmen New Zealand has ever produced and a great leader of men. He was influential in NZ getting to the semis in the 1992 world cup where they only lost one group game and unfortunately the semi-final. He ended up being the highest run scorer on 456 runs at a average of 114 and a impressive strike-rate of 90.83. All this in nine matches. He'll be a handy batsman to have at the number 4 spot in my side.

4. Martin Crowe
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
10.
11.

I also found out that he scored a 97 (118) in his first world cup match against England in 1983 and a 91 (83) in his last world cup match against Pakistan in 1992.

Great pick Riz... You did some nice research :thumbs

Yeah I think Crowe's clearly the best World Cup player they've had. As an Aussie fan, he was a real thorn in my side back in that '92 World Cup. I couldn't believe we were sucking yet the Kiwis were going well. I think he was the official Player of the Tournament in '92 as well.

Papa_Smurf, now's your chance to shine mate!

EDIT: Just updated the first post after randomly assigning the rest of the spots. If any of the 5 of you (Cricketman, shravi, User2010, AkshayS and ZoraxDoom) still want a particular position you can claim it before the person you'd like to swap with makes his first pick. But of course you can't have the spots that have already been claimed by the other 4 players. Oh and you can swap with me too if you like - I don't care. Just thought I'd offer everyone the option. So that means I've got User2010 currently having the 3rd pick in this round.

Alright with number 3. Good pick there Riz, Crowe was one I was looking for hoping no one else picks him. :p Have some other Kiwis in mind though.
