Dipak Patel

Dipak Patel

Like rizzy, my Kiwi pick is also from the 1992 NZ squad. A right-arm offie, he surprised the world during the cup by opening the bowling for NZ, and he was sensational at it. His stats are decent for that cup - 8 wickets at an average of 30, but it was his economy rate that was outstanding considering he was bowling with the new ball - 3.60. Here's a list of his figures for each match during that WC:

:thumbs Nice pick Rizzy - I knew you were going to for him as he is undoubtedly NZ's best performer during the 92 WC. Not only an outsanding batsman, he was an amazing captain - without a doubt the best captain of the 92 WC, along with Imran.

dipak patel was probably my second choice pick too, from what i've heard he was exceptional in that worldcup. :yes

Hmmm....better players/performers for NZ in WC that Patel out there, wouldn't have gone for him if I had an early pick myself.

Shane Bond

Second highest wicket taker for the Kiwis (and 13th overall) in World Cup matches behind Chris Harris with 30 wickets in 16 innings at an average of 17.26 is Shane Bond. His economy of just 3.50 is fantastic for a fast bowler. Strike Rate of 2 wickets per 59 balls during World Cup matches and overall career strike rate of 29.2 makes him one of the best bowlers in the history of One Day Cricket. Had he not been hit by so many injuries, we could have seen much more of this great fast bowler.

His 6 for 23 in a super six match against Australia is best by any New Zealand bowler in a World Cup match. The result of that match though isn't the one to discuss for a Kiwi fan. Spearhead of my bowling attack, Shane Edward Bond.

Hmm, I'm not sure I'd have picked Patel either, but he certainly was a nagging bowler and REALLY nagging in that World Cup. And it also shows the beauty of the World Cup (and this draft), highlighting players who had their brief moments in the sun.

Oh and Shane Bond.... very nice.

Also shows my limited knowledge. I was like 'who?' when I saw that post. :p Surely will be a nice thing this draft for me.

Shane Bond - brilliant pick :thumbs One of the greatest express bowlers of all time - ahead of Lee and Akhtar in my book.

I'm sticking with my pick of Patel - even though he was a very average bowler and didn't do too much in his career outside that WC - he was outstanding in it. And after all, this is a WC draft, and on that WC form I picked him.

Plus he gives me more variety in my attack - not bad having a spinner in your attack that you know can be brought in the first 10 overs and do a brilliant job in case the quicks are being smacked all over.

Lot of spinners from other nations too. Bond would have been one name I'd have taken over Patel - took wickets as well as keeping the runs down

Yes, this is a very good point. Though I know next to nothing about him but with the little bit of description you wrote about him seems to be a good bowler or may I say a good World Cup bowler.

Absolutely right about the WC form.

Jeetan Patel's father, I think ?

Hang on, I was certain he was Jeetan Patels father. Cricinfo says they're no relation. Can someone confirm for me, I'm confused about this.

They aren't related. Patel is a very common last name. Sure they could be like 4th cousins or something, but no direct relation.

They're not father/son, maybe uncle/nephew, but I'm not too sure.

Sifter, will it be possible for you to link the 'pick' post too in the first post? I mean just after the player name, it will be interesting to read a bit about what others pick.
