Draft time: World Cup history - ALL FINISHED!!

They're not father/son, maybe uncle/nephew, but I'm not too sure.
Okay, I just thought I heard commentators mention that they were some relation many times. I was absolutely certain they were related.

I guess I can learn a thing or two from this draft too then.

Lot of spinners from other nations too.

Yeah, but were they deadly at opening the bowling, at a WC? My team, my rules :D

----------

As far as my knowledge goes, Patel doesn't have any relatives involved in cricket. This draft is going nicely - first 3 picks picked already.

Mohit - you're up!

Grrh... Bond gone too :p Anyway i was way too optimistic to think that 5 other people would somehow miss or forget Bond :D

Can anyone tell me how to filter world cup stats in stats guru? Or you guys are using something else

never mind found it

Stephen Fleming

Stephen Fleming is not only the most successful captain of New Zealand but also the most successful batsman for New Zealand at World cup, The only New Zealand batsman to score 1000+ runs in the prestigious tournament and also features in the top 10 scorers at WC. He captained New Zealand for a world record 218 ODI's & lead the team to semi-finals of World cup in 2007. He has often lead the team from front, He played one of his fabulous knock in the World cup against SA where he scored 134.Certainly one of the most stylish openers to have played.

Nice pick that mate. I saw it coming as Fleming (as you said) has been brilliant in WC matches. Plus, he's a captaincy material.

Nice pick but i didnt want him... Targeting someone else :p
Just Akshay left before i could pick my player.

I had three players in mind, Bond obviously and Crowe. One more who has been very good for NZ during WC. Hasn't been picked yet.

Chris Harris - brilliant athlete

Chris Harris

Had to say, he was one of the finest cricketers NZ have ever produced, a quality allrounder and a brilliant athlete to say the least. He was comfortable batting anywhere from 5-7.
He was a accumulator with the bat, picking gaps at will and slog it hard when needed. And his nagging spells were more than handy for any batsmen. His scintillating 130 vs Australia is still afresh in the minds of cricket lovers, that was one of the best innings of the tournament, though NZ lost the match but Harris won.
Just look at his record and it tells you that he has been consistent with both bat and bowl, though he contributed much more with the bowl instead of bat.
He took 32 wickets @26 and with a strike rate of 36(enough for a fifth bowler).IIRC, the highest wicket taker for NZ in World cup.

To add to it, he was a brilliant athlete, as fast as lightning on the field.

And my pick is....

Scott Styris

article-1029291-01BDC7B000000578-198_468x561.jpg

Arguably one of the most underrated Kiwi player. Originally a seamer, a knee injury forced him to take his batting more seriously, and he switched from being a bowler who can bat into being a batsman who occasionally bowls. I was tempted to pick either Richard Hadley or Chris Cairns to fill the allrounder spot but when i compared the WC performances surprisingly Scott was a ahead by a mile.

In his 18 WC games he has scored 767 runs at an average of 70. he has 2 hundreds to his name. His top score 141 came against Srilanka at Bloemfontein in 2003 in a losing cause where next best score form a kiwi batsman was 32 by Chris Cairns. And the next best was extras that is 15.
Who can forget his thrilling 101 that came in the huge chase of 332 against Australia.
He took 13 wickets at an average of 32 with a best of 4/43.
On the field he's not too bad either and he held the record for best bowling in ODI (6/25) for some time before Shane Bond took over....

Very good pick, must say. Provides an all round option and has been very good for Kiwis in WC in both bowling and batting departments.

----------

Though mine above post holds good for both picks but, that is for Harris. Angry, this was my third option. Would have picked him based on his past WC performances but, just went for Bond at the last minute. Not sure about no. 7 for him though.

I might move him up the order depending upon how the draft goes. I would have picked Bond too if he wasnt picked already. A fit Bond is one of most deadly bowler who has played the game. Oh boy, there would be a lot of picks from Australia. Everyone would leave happy i guess. They have so many good WC players ;)

Sifter, will it be possible for you to link the 'pick' post too in the first post? I mean just after the player name, it will be interesting to read a bit about what others pick.

Nice idea, and I've put the links in the first post now. Should be working.

Yeah, but were they deadly at opening the bowling, at a WC? My team, my rules :D

Exactly mate. Don't let anyone else tell you how to pick :thumbs But that said, I'm glad you didn't pick my guy :p

Styris = EXCELLENT pick. He was the 3rd Kiwi I would have gone for after Crowe and Bond. Not just because he has a great WC record, but as you would know, he balances your team nicely. I don't think his bowling was that great - solid, but nothing special, so I wouldn't rely on him for 10 overs everytime. He'd be my 6th bowler and his batting in World Cups was easily good enough to bat higher than #7.

And it's always nice to wake up and see a few picks have been made. Lets try and keep the good progress up.

Well there are still a lot of good kewi's left
