Draft time: World Cup history - ALL FINISHED!!

Whoa, had no idea Hadlee was so economical. Now that I think about it, it might have a lot to do with the fact that the opposition might have just decided to leave Hadlee alone and attack from the other end.

But definitley a good pick :thumbs

You're next Jason - can't wait to see who your guy is.

Yeah, 24 hours might be too long - the draft has slowed down since yesterday. How about 12-18 hours - that's reasonable :thumbs

Sifter told me to make his pick in a PM if he wasn't on by this time so here goes.

Sifter picks...

Geoff Allott!

I will let him do the write up.

He was my next pick if someone else picked Styris before. Brilliant bowler but suffered from "Bond-Syndrome" :p I guess enough said..

Shravi you are up next.. Whats your pick :spy

Was Allot or Hadlee for me. Thought the extra batting might prove useful. Plus, how can you ignore a guy with an economy of 2.88 :p

Shravi is taking his time :p Thats understandable, there are not a lot of good player left. He might go with this guy --> :spy

Writeup added for Chris Harris.

Thanks for that mate. Harris was one of those great guys who could fill the gaps in your team. Bat, ball or field. You pointed out that awesome 130 he made v Aus. That was a legendary attack he belted up that day.

That's basically EXACTLY what I was thinking. I'll have to watch you :p Had Hadlee as my first preference for the ability to bat a bit higher, and plus he's a bit more of a legendary name than Allott. There wasn't much in it though because Allott's 1999 was fantastic, so I'm certainly happy to him.

Thanks for posting the pick shravi - saved a couple of hours I guess :D You can edit/delete that post if you want to.

So to do it officially...I'm picking Geoff Allott!

Who is he? Well Allott only played one World Cup tournament (1999), but he dominated for the Kiwis with his left arm swing bowling. A bit like Dipak Patel, Allott was basically a one-tournament-wonder. He only played 31 ODIs in his entire career, but always battled injuries and never found that zing he had in 1999.

World Cup Stats:
Matches: 9
Wickets: 20
Average: 16.25
Economy: 3.70
Best Bowling: 4/37 (10 overs) v Australia
Man of the Match awards: 1 for his 3/15 (10 overs) v Scotland

Oh you mean "Harry Potter" and "Castle " :p

If Cricketman comes online now then we would be able to move to 6th pick of 2nd round quickly. Next round is : Cricketman,Shravi,Sifter,Zorax,Angrypixel,. Except him all of us are online.:noway

wtf are you on about?

Can't say the name of the remaining players here. :p So just indirectly posting them.
Who in the Kiwi team has something in common with Harry potter. What would be Castle - "C" ;)

I thought of going for one of the great modern all rounders but his record in World Cups was nothing special. While his batting average was decent his bowling was nothing special as he was neither economical nor a wicket taking threat in World Cups.

Instead I chose a stable opening batsman who has a phenomenal World Cup record. In 14 matches he scored 612 runs at an average of 61 which included 2 centuries and 2 fifties. While some may say his strike rate may prove to be an issue one must take into consideration that his strike rate was the norm for his era. ODI cricket has evolved so much over the years that there are always going to be minor discrepancies when scrutinizing someone's stats as closely as that.

I think Turner will prove to be a very valuable asset and get this hypothetical team off to a very steady start and protect me from too many early wickets falling. In World Cups he has a highest score of 171* showing that he can bat through an entire innings if needed.

Well done shravi - Turner is very well regarded in Kiwi history I believe. And as you say economy rates and strike rates from the past are always going to be a little off. My rule of thumb would be to add around 1 RPO for bowlers or about 16 to the S/R for batsmen. Adding 16 to Turner's World Cup S/R of 64 would get him up around 80, which in the modern game is fine. If not pretty good.

RPO should be increased more. This is what i'm thinking :

Economy = original economy X (Highest team total of recent WC/Highest Team total of the WC from which player belongs)

let us suppose that our bowler belongs to a world cup where highest team total was 300 and his economy was 3.2 . Highest team total in a recent WC was 414(i could be wrong, this is just an example)

Economy= 3.2 X (414/300)= 3.2 X 1.38 = 4.416

Thus we can get a reasonably result which would be indication of quality of batting in that world cup and pitches.

I would have preferred to use the average score of the world cup but couldn't find it. If someone finds it then we could use that to get more accurate results.
