Draft time: World Cup history - ALL FINISHED!!

I guess you are right.. No need to make things any more complex :p

Great pick in Allot mate :thumbs I was going to go for either him or Patel - lucky for you I picked the spinner :p

----------

Whoa, those are amazing stats for Turner, shravi. Never seen him play, but those numbers suggest he was a hell of a WC opener. Excellent pick :thumbs

Tick-tock Cricketman - hurry up! :p

24 hours is too long - the draft has come to a complete stand-still. 2 hours left for Cricketman - what happens if he doesn't post?

^ And who that might be....

----------

Just 20 minutes left..

Cricketman's profile says he's currently online and I've just sent him a PM telling him to get over here and make his picks. If he doesn't show up then it's his PAKISTAN pick that gets delayed. He's holding up the Pakistan round, not the NZ one. He can make the NZ one anytime, since there's no other people who need to pick a NZ player.

----------

Yeah so in 5 minutes shravi will be within his rights to make a pick.

To get back in, Cricketman will have to announce that he's here and ready to pick. Then he'll get to go after whoever is currently picking. He can make the NZ pick whenever he likes. And if he doesn't show up, we replace him.

----------

OK so by my watch it is now shravi's pick. Even if Cricketman turns up in the next 5 minutes, he must wait for shravi to pick.

Well, this was a really tough one as there have been some great performers for Pakistan in World Cups with both bat and ball and it's unfortunate that I can't go for all of them. I looked at the rounds after this and I'm not exactly in the best position to go for an all rounder of a similar class so I'm going to go for it now.

Imran Khan was an inspirational leader, lionhearted batsman and supremely talent bowler. In 28 world cup matches (24 innings) he scored 666 runs at an average of 35 with 1 century and 4 fifties. In 19 innings as a bowler, he took 34 wickets at an average of 19 with a quite phenomenal strike rate of 29.9. He is Pakistan's second highest wicket taker in World Cups although he played in 10 less matches and bowled in 17 less innings than the leader. He also has a superior average and strike rate to the leader so I think he betters him or worst case, is even with him. He is also the fifth highest run scorer for Pakistan in World Cups and he is in some quite illustrious company so it's quite an achievement to be that high up.

I haven't even mentioned his captaincy yet. It was truly sensational and it's no wonder that he's the face of Pakistan cricket. He's idolized amongst his peers and his people and is truly one of the great captains in cricketing history. He had an unmatched eye for talent, lead from the front and was very astute. I don't think I need to tell you about the 1992 World Cup as that is forever etched in history as one of the most magical World Cup victories, both for the final and everything leading upto it. It's no surprise then that Imran Khan walks into my side with consummate ease as captain at number 8.

Yup, pretty straight-forward. Looking good with Turner and Khan in your team shravi. Am slightly jealous :p

Agree with you shravi. Imran's was my first choice too, but not by a lot. It's his all-round ability that makes him #1 I think.

Anyway, since Cricketman's AWOL I get the next pick.

I've chosen...Abdul Qadir!
Abdul+Qadir+accuses+ICC+of+double+standards.jpg

Abdul Qadir

A good World Cup spinner is not the easiest thing to find and when I made a quick list of spinners that I wanted in this draft there was only one guy I could find that I wanted more than Qadir - and there's no way he'll fall to my pick. So Abdul Qadir it is!

Who is Abdul Qadir? He's a Pakistani leg-spinner who played in the 1983 and 1987 World Cups. The 1983 World Cup was his ODI debut in fact. All the more significant since in those days, a) there were hardly any leg spinners around, and b) leg spinners were thought of being too expensive to play in ODI cricket. But the selectors soon found he was good enough to be fairly miserly AND to attack constantly. As a leggie he had all the variations, packaged in a fast, hard to read action. There was too many variations sometimes as every ball was different it seemed. But because of that action and his different deliveries, batsmen rarely ever felt comfortable against him.

How did he go in World Cups? Very well, thanks for asking. His overall record is good, but it is the stamp he put on individual games that impress me. For example, his 5/44 vs Sri Lanka came when Sri Lanka were cruising to victory at 2/162 chasing 236. Then Qadir came on and ripped out a 5fer to get Pakistan home by 11 runs.

World Cup Stats:
Matches: 13
Wickets: 24
Average: 21.08
Economy: 3.72
Best Bowling: 5/44 (12 overs) v Sri Lanka, 1983
3 Man of the Match awards: 4/21 (12 overs) v New Zealand, 1983; 5/44 (12 overs) v Sri Lanka, 1983; and 4/31 (10 overs) v England, 1987.

And a word on his batting: Qadir usually batted at #9 for Pakistan, but his record with the bat in World Cups is a little better than that. In his 9 knocks, he was only dismissed twice and both were run outs! All those NOs left Qadir with a World Cup average of 59.00, with a HS of 41* v NZ. But his more famous innings was 16* v West Indies in 1987, where he took 14 off the last over of the match bowled by Courtney Walsh to get Pakistan a last ball win with only 1 wicket in hand. I think that deserves a promotion to #8 at this stage - depending on who else I pick of course.

So in summary, you could argue there have been other World Cup spinners who have been more consistent than Qadir, but not as many who have been able to produce brilliant spells that turn and win matches. That's why he's in my team - to win me matches and to be a constant menace for opposing batsmen in those middle overs for the Sifter XI.

Awesome pick mate :thumbs The googly master. I remember reading somewhere the reason why he had so many different googlies - he had a very unusual grip for a leggie. Spun the ball the using his index finger rather than the third and fourth. Awesome bowler.

Darn. Wanted to steal Qadir, his batting was surprisingly good :p

Imran was obvious for me cause good captains are rare. Anyways...

Saeed Anwar

Matches Played: 21
Runs Scored: 915
Average: 53.82
Strike Rate: 79.08
50s/100s: 3/3

Elegant and destructive, Saeed Anwar was an opener of the highest quality, especially in World Cups. Also a veteran of 3 different tourneys (96, 99 and 03) he picked up centuries against NZ, Zimbabwe and old foes India, taking his average in WCs well above his career number (39.21).

1996 was by far his best tournament, recording a string of scores that read 40*(50), 83*(92), 25(30), 71(72), 62(67) and 48(32). Brilliant. He followed that up with 2 centuries in 1999, and after a slow start in 2003 ended with 101 against India and an unbeaten 40 against Zimbabwe as Pak batted first in a rained-off match which ended Pak's WC campaign.

Zorax's World Cup XI
Saeed Anwar (Pak '96, '99 and '03) (915 runs @ 53.82)
Sir Richard Hadlee (NZ, '75 '79 and '83) (22 wickets @ 19.13, 149 runs @ 16.55)

Hmm, outstanding opener no doubt - just not someone I would've gone for personally if I had one of the first picks, espeically considering he hasn't been picked yet.

But good choice nonetheless :thumbs
