Oooh, close match there Rizzy. Magnificent Martin to the rescue, as usual. Did you use the WC averages? Cos your sim is more realistic than mine - Abbas gets to bowl 4-5 overs while Patel hardly any when I sim :p Good job :thumbs

Yeah, it's fun :D I'm sure we can get some sort of All-Time Sim WC going - anyone got any ideas on the format?

nope, this is where my experience with cricksim comes in handy :p dipak's bowling is rated at 35 and most of the batsmen's ratings have been decreased by a few points from both teams. As a general rule you cant open with a spinner if you have atleast 2 fast bowlers in the side and even if they aren't some random batsman might end up opening bowling. so dipak wont be opening the bowling sadly :(

I think we should all make our own teams and mail them to someone biased to adjust the ratings, is chewie still doing this? if not maybe someone else from the leagues section could help.

Yeah, it's fun I'm sure we can get some sort of All-Time Sim WC going - anyone got any ideas on the format?

some sort of knockout tournament or if you want a longer format a single round robin followed by semis/final should do.

Not a lot of good players left so i have to shuffle some of my players and get a middle order batsman. My pick is Dean Jones. He avg 57 in 4 matches he's played in the middle order. Detailed writeup later.

Angrypixel's WC XI

1. Sachin Tendulkar(C)
2. Sanath Jayasuriya
3. Mark Waugh
4. Dean Jones
5. Scott Styris
6. Andy Flower(WK)
7. Ryan Ten Doeschate
8. Andrew Flintoff
9. Wasim Akram
10.Joel Garner
11.Allan Donald

Now we have all of the teams, someone should start a thread in the leagues section. We would love to play a world cup there:yes

  9. Shoaib Akhtar
  10. Shane Bond
  11. Mushtaq Ahmed

Excellent bowling attack. Facing both Shoaib and Bond will be a nightmare for any line-up. Mushy's an excellent spinner and Streak and Blain are decent back-ups. Batting line-up's decent, with Clive coming in at 6. Good captain as well, but personally would've given it to Lloyd.

  11. Waqar Younis

Some great picks in there, considering when you had to pick them. I would argue that you have the strongest bowling attack - Lee was outstanding in 03, Murali is Murali and Waqar makes an excellent death bowler. And with players like Dev, Hamilton, Harris and Symonds to back-up, there is no shortage of options. Batting-line up looks a little suspect, but you've got an excellent anchor in Gooch and the x-factor in Symonds. A very deadly XI indeed.

Bowling's quite good - McGrath's probably the best WC bowler in history, and with the likes of Kumble, Roberts, Bichel and Klusner, you've got a very potent attack. The only worry might be the lack of part-timers, who could chip in if any of the main have an off day. Both openers were brilliant during WC's, and in Klusner, you've got the best finisher in the business. The middle order looks a little fragile, however.

Riz7Khan12
  1. Virender Sehwag
  2. Grant Flower
  3. Ricky Ponting
  4. Martin Crowe (*)
  5. Javed Miandad
  6. AB de Villiers (+)
  7. Shakib Al Hasan
  8. Trent Johnston
  9. Phil DeFreitas
  10. Lasith Malinga
  11. Michael Holding

That middle-order just screams out at you. Ponting, Crowe, Miandad, Devilliers, Al-Hasan - you've got the strongest batting-line up, no contest. Openers complement each other - Flower can play a very good supporting role for Sehwag's destructiveness. Actually, both can afford to go all-out, considering who's coming in after them. Bowling's ok - Holding makes for a lethal spearhead, while Malinga gives you that x-factor. DeFreitas has experience, while Shakib and Johnson make for excellent back-ups. But it's not too special as compared to the others. No 2nd spinner either might be a concern, but with that batting-line up, the bowling's more than enough.

AngryPixel
  1. Sachin Tendulkar (*)
  2. Sanath Jayasuriya
  3. Mark Waugh
  4. Dean Jones
  5. Scott Styris
  6. Andy Flower (+)
  7. Ryan Ten Doeschate
  8. Andrew Flintoff
  9. Wasim Akram
  10. Joel Garner
  11. Allan Donald

This is has to be the Star XI. Just look at the names - Jaysuriya, Waugh, Tendulkar, Donald, Akram, Garner, Flintoff. But one has to question whether those names actually shone at the WC as much as the names would suggest. Flintoff in particular was a pick I didn't agree with. But there's no doubt at the quality of those names. But the side's let down by some strange picks - Ryan Doeschate and Jones hardly played at the WC. No proper spinner either, and considering you could've picked a handful of quality ones at the last round (like Saqlain), the side lacks balance. A dangerous XI, but might be a little mecurial. Might have made Wasim captain instead as well, more successful than Sachin.

Shravi
  1. Glenn Turner
  2. Marvan Atapattu
  3. Kevin Pietersen
  4. Herschelle Gibbs
  5. Navjot Singh Sidhu
  6. Mark Boucher (+)
  7. Imran Khan (*)
  8. Thomas Odoyo
  9. Shane Warne
  10. Boyd Rankin
  11. Courtney Walsh

I like this, I really do. Some really good picks in there - Turner, Khan, Warne, Walsh. But it doesn't stand out. Both batting and bowling are good, and captaincy's brilliant. It's a really good side, will be very consistent. But while it is a good side, it's not exceptional.

ZoraxDoom
  1. Saeed Anwar
  2. Jan-Berrie Burger
  3. Graeme Smith
  4. Rahul Dravid (+)
  5. Steve Waugh (*)
  6. Ramnaresh Sarwan
  7. Steve Tikolo
  8. Brad Hogg
  9. Chaminda Vaas
  10. Richard Hadlee
  11. Chris Old

I'm guessing this will be your final batting order. If it isn't, it just proves how versatile it is. The opening pair of Old and Hadlee makes for a very economical partnership that can take wickets while keeping things quiet. Vaas adds experience and variation with the left-arm, and there's no questioning Hogg's brilliance. Anwar makes for an excellent opener, while Burger can give an aggressive start. Middle order's pretty soild, and with Hadlee coming in at 10, there's a lot of depth to the batting. All in all, a very balanced side - there's no weak point. Will be highly efficient.

Sifter132
  1. David Boon
  2. Neil Johnson
  3. Brian Lara
  4. Aravinda de Silva
  5. Mohammad Azharuddin (*)
  6. Niall O'Brien (+)
  7. Jonty Rhodes
  8. Sir Ian Botham
  9. Abdul Qadir
  10. Craig McDermott
  11. Geoff Allott

This has to be my favourite XI. I just love this side, especially the Boon pick. Middle-order is solid, the bowling attack has variety, Neil's a great all-rounder and Jonty adds value. My only concern is that while the tail (up tp Qadir) can add runs, you don't really have someone who can finish things off properly. Botham might, but his average isn't too great. But it is a side that you can just tell people would love to support.

Papa_Smurf
  1. Adam Gilchrist (+)
  2. John Davison
  3. Viv Richards (*)
  4. Zaheer Abbas
  5. Arjuna Ranatunga
  6. Michael Bevan
  7. Shaun Pollock
  8. Paul Strang
  9. Dipak Patel
  10. Bob Willis
  11. Javagal Srinath

Not much to say here. As good as the other XI's are, there's no arguing that this side is going to end up as champions.

Nice Write up papa. I agree with you that Ryan has barely played in WC but again it was the minnows round. Dean Jones played 16 WC games. That is not barely. I guess you got confused with the stat i posted. Its about how many times he played between 4-7. Overall he's played 16 games at avg of 47

----------

I didnt picked a spinner for two reasons :
1) Jayasurya is a handy part timer and he,styris,Ryan can fill in as 5th bowler.
2) I though Saqlain was already picked but it was Mushtaq Ahmed :facepalm. Otherwise i would have picked him...

P.S: Can i drop Jones and Pick Saqlain now?:p

Yeah knock yourself out mate - take Saqlain if you want, no one else wants him :p

I like your summary Papa_Smurf - seems pretty good. You spotted my team's weakness, the lower order batting which was where I tried to hide my weaker players (O'Brien and Rhodes).

I did a bit of analysis of my own style this morning, see what you think...I didn't include myself but I think my team would be up there for middle order ability, spin + support bowling, as well as fielding, balance, authenticy and you could argue for openers too, since I'm the only pair that has both averaging over 50 at WCs.

Important categories:
Best openers
Winner: AngryPixel - Tendulkar/Jayasuriya
Runner up: User2010 - Hayden/Ganguly

Best middle order 3-5
Winner: riz7khan - Ponting/Crowe/Miandad
Runner up: Papa_Smurf - Richards/Abbas/Ranatunga

Best pace trio
Winner: ZoraxDoom - Vaas/Hadlee/Old
Runner up: AngryPixel - Donald/Garner/Akram

Best spin + allrounder bowlers
Winner: shravi - Warne/Imran Khan/Odoyo
Runner up: AkshayS - Murali/Kapil Dev/Harris

Bonus categories:
Best lower order 6-8
Winner: mohit_dude - Odumbe/Klusener/Bichel
Runner up: AkshayS - Kapil Dev/Harris/Hamilton

Best fielding
Winner: AkshayS - Symonds, Harris and Lee all excellent fielders. Kapil Dev took one of the great WC catches in the 1983 final.
Runner up: AngryPixel - if he keeps Dean Jones maybe even the best. Waugh, Jones, ten Doeschate and Donald are all good fielders.

Best balance
Winners: mohit_dude, ZoraxDoom & AkshayS. What is balance? To me generally it's a good batting keeper in the top 6, 3 all-rounders at 6,7 & 8. Of course it can vary a bit...Also, a mix of pace and spin. Basically 6 bowling options with variety and good lower order batting is good balance.

Best authenticity
Winners for having their batsmen in the right spots and for picking the right guys for the jobs they actually did in World Cups: shravi, Papa_Smurf, User2010, mohit_dude and ZoraxDoom

So making a crude scoring system by giving out 2 points for winning the main 4 categories (1 for runner up), and 1 each for winning the lesser categories (0.5 for runner up), I end up with this:
4 - ZoraxDoom
3.5 - AkshayS
3.5 - AngryPixel
3 - mohit_dude
3 - shravi
2 - riz7khan
2 - Papa_Smurf
2 - User2010

In summary, not much between the teams really. I'd probably have Angry's team MARGINALLY ahead of Zorax, Akshay and mohit if I had to pick one with a gun to my head. But even the teams I haven't lauded are all quite well made, so hats off to everyone - it's been a fine example of drafting :thumbs

Nice Write up's.

Best Openers: Angry beats everyone by miles. With Sachin and Jayasuriya opening it can be nightmare for any bowlers. Sanath who fires right from the word go and Sachin who likes to play big innings. Also the Left/Right combination can annoy the bowlers.

Best Middle Order: I couldn't pick one from the 3 of them so listing them all. First Riz7Khan12 has the best middle order i think, Ponting has been really successful and with Crowe, Miandad and Devilliers to follow they can really prove to be difficult for any team. Sifter132 also has a really good middle order with the legendary Lara followed by Arvinda De silva and Azharuddin and Last but not the least PapaSmurf's middle order stacked with legends like Richards, Abhas and Ranatunga.

Best Bowling attack: AkshayS has probably the best bowling attack, With Lee and Waqar who are one of the best new/old ball bowlers + Muralitharan the best spinner around and Kapil Dev and Harris to round up the bowling attack. It can prove to be very devastating for the opposition teams.

Best All Rounders: Shravi - Having Imran Khan, Odoyo and Warne at 7,8,9 it really makes the batting order a bit too long for any oppositions liking.
Zorax- Here again with Tikolo, Vaas and Hogg they can really annoy the opposition team by adding valuable runs to the total.

Most Balanced Team: Personally i feel User's team is more balanced than any other, Dashing openers who've done really good at World cup for their teams and with Kallis leading the middle order makes it really strong batting line up and about bowlers, well with the likes of Akhtar and Bond they can scare the best of the bests with Mushtaq quietly controlling and chipping in with wickets in the middle overs.

But yeah still none of them ain't good enough to beat my team :p JK

Would have loved to have him if actually played in a WC :p

So how about the simming guys? Any of you experienced simmers want to do it? I personally wouldn't mind doing it, but it would be based on just WC averages.

if everyone or a few of you can make the database for your own team and send them into me i would edit the ratings as required and get the league underway :thumbs
