Pura Cup ? Game 4
Victorian Bushrangers Vs New South Wales Blues
The MCG, Melbourne
29th November 2006

The boys took the field after losing the toss with confidence that a bowling attack which has been performing well so far this season could steam roll the cellar dwellers of NSW for under 200. Pat?s on the back came early as Greg Mail was caught and bowler by Harwood for a modest 9 to make the score 1/16.

Shane Harwood says somthing along the lines of "thank's for coming"

The Victorian?s were just getting warmed up and soon had the Blues at 2/22 when Phelps stepped to far across his stumps and got trapped LBW for 12. Just the start the home side were looking for as experienced campaigners Katich and Thornely found themselves at the crease without much time in the dressing room to catch up on bed time reading from the night before.

Phelps hits a few nice shots and then gets trapped

Australian representative Simon Katich and Domenic Thornely set about getting the winless Blues back in the match with a slow partnership that worked towards steadying the ship. The 50 partnership came up as Cameron White made bowling changes looking for the breakthrough but it didn?t come. White finally turned to his 16 year old medium fast bowler and asked him to have a bowl with the Katich and Thornely partnership standing at an unbeaten 96.

Another unsuccessful Vitorian bowler

Blues are in control of this first inngins. Slater needs to be introduced. I want NSW to win because I am from NSW, but I want Victoria to win because of Slats. Excellent work as always. :cheers

EDIT: Cricket_60, I am NSW through and through. Not having to be involved in State of Origin wouldn't be the same.

The easy solution is to go for the Warriors :D

Slats should be handed the ball soon

Being introduced into the attack after 40 overs gives the vibe of you?re the last option as is the case for me who now faces to set batsman that are nearing a 100 run partnership that has the Blues well on the front foot for the moment.

There are two things that can happen in this situation. Either I come on and get a wicket early or the recognized part time bowler gets the hammer and goes for runs as the established batsman look to up the ante.

After just two overs Cameron White gave me the bad news that I was off as ?We couldn?t afford to give away runs at the moment?. A partnership that the commentators up in the box are describing as the best of the season so far has the Blues clearly on top at the moment as they have momentum and control of the match.

No recall into the attack looked likely as the front line bowlers battled away at the MCG. Soon after the bowling change the Katich and Thornely was broken as the skipper did it himself having Katich caught Klinger who was followed by Thornely who was run out to make it 4/179.

Cameron White picks up a icket and a run out single
handedly getting the Vic's back in the 1st innings. Again.

Another steadying partnership wasn?t far away as O?Brien and Lambert got the score to 5/233 when O?Brien hit one to mid off from the bowling of Moss. Enter Brad Haddin who looked good at the start but fell for 28 followed by Lambert for 48 and then the all rounder Bradstreet for 19 to bring the score along to 8/318.

Aaron O'Brien is always a danger man

The final two wickets knocked up a nice 20 odd to frustrate the Victorian bowlers before Bollinger was the last man out caught Slatter for a single. Mick Lewis the pick of the bowlers as he battled away and finished with a bag of 4 as the rest of the wicket takers only managed singles.

A tough challenge awaits the Victorians when they take the field in 10 minutes time to start there first innings in front of a home crowd 344 runs behind the NSW Blues just 20 minutes into the second days play. The Blues pushed hard all innings despite losing wickets once partnership had been established. A good contest awaits here as the Victorian batting line-up will be no push over for the Blues

Nice stuff, disappointing from NSW. Should have made 400 by this point.

A warm applause from the home fans welcomed Michael Klinger and Jason Arnberger back onto the MCG for the start of the Victorian reply to a strong NSW total which could of possibly been even more then it was if some of there batsman had of made the most of their starts.

Dont they make a great couple?

A solid start once again from the Victorian pair which seem to be taking a liking to runs for the opening wicket in this Pura Cup competition as they took the home side up to and past 0/50. It took some inspired bowling from Nicholson to remove Klinger for 20, which brought the score to 1/65.

Kling only made it to 20 this time

Jon Moss who has recently fit a small purple patch after struggling in his first few innings of the season came to the crease and took over from Klinger as Arnberger reached 50. In a partnership of 57 the pair showed just how good they are before Moss was caught off the bowling of Bollinger for 31.

Mossy. Still in form?

Brad Hodge then made his way the out of the dressing rooms and again a partnership formed. Arnberger this time taking part in a 70 run stand with Hodge which included a well-deserved century including 14 boundaries and 2 that went all the way. It was Hodge who made a mistake against Nicholson on 27 and gave Aaron O?Brien catching practice at 3/192

Cheesy reaches three figures

I now had the pads on as the next man in and it didn?t take long for Arnberger to get ahead of himself, which contributed to the fall of his wicket without anymore runs added to the team total brining it to 4/192. It?s now up to me to see the team to tea which is just around the corner and avoid collapsing still a long way behind the NSW first innings total. It will take some work to stop the visitors from knocking up their first innings points of the season as anything can happen from here.

Victorian Bushrangers 4/192
3:22pm ? Day 2

56.2 overs

Arnberger 104(182)
Hussey 0(2)*

Nicholson 2/40
Bollinger
1/42
Bradstreet 0/40
Krejza 1/56
Katich 0/11

Victorian Bushrangers trail by 152 runs

Yes, just a mistake. But the story has to be one of the best so far, Short Leg. Keep it up.

Slats got a punishing. Victoria is batting average at the moment and unless Slats turns it around NSW are going to win this comfortably.

:cheers,
Leftie
