England in Australia limited overs series

Utterly ridiculous taking him home, it seems quite clear now that he was never going to get a game all tour. They should have sent him on the lions tour, im sick of the way players keep getting thrown in at the deep end, get ruined, and then get discarded.

Compton, Kerrigan, woakes, finn arguably Root, bairstow, carberry, Rankin, bopara, morgan and tremlett too. Disgraceful really, the selectors must know the best 15 players in the country. Enough for all conditions but they seem clueless.

Surely they must know that the batsmen is 5/6 of

Root
Cook
Compton
Trott
Bell
Pietersen
Ballance
Stokes

Keeper is Prior/??

Bowlers are

Anderson
Broad
Finn
Bresnan
Onions
Panesar
Borthwick

Now just keep picking from that group and we will win cricket matches

It's hardly a surprise if Finn is struggling, given that he's been around the England team for the last couple of years, hardly playing. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he's suffering from a loss of confidence, because clearly nobody in the England set up rates him. My main issue though are these 'technical issues'. As I said he's been around the squad and Saker for long enough, that surely he should have been given the right advice by now? There's been no mention of him not putting in the effort or following advice, so it must be a case of Saker not doing enough to help him.

We're led to believe that Saker is one of the best bowling coaches around, hence why he's in the job. So why then has he not achieved anything with Finn, yet he's been released back to Middlesex, essentially to inferior coaching. It's baffling.

What the hell have they done to Finn! :facepalm

Finn's great problem is that he's just not the hero England wants. That's why England picked Bresnan to bowl 75 mph. Finn is easily ahead of Bresnan on wicket-taking, but they want a bowler who keeps the runs down. They love accuracy and prefer skiddy seamers at home. Their whole game plan is to accumulate runs and bowl dry. Finn is tall, fast, a bit loose and probably not at his best when he pushes the ball up full. I suspect Saker knows Finn's strengths, but it is the England camp who don't.

I think you've nailed it. With a quality trio of Anderson/Broad/Swann your 4th bowler could be almost anyone, but its clear that Cook and Flower have preferred Bresnan's control over Finn's ability to strike. Finn just didn't fit their ideal. Now with Swann gone the issue is going to rise again, what type of bowler does England need to complement the two spearheads?

interesting you mention Cooley, since he also got a lot of credit when we had Harmison, Hoggard, Flintoff and Jones all firing and everyone forgets he all but destroyed Jimmy Anderson. When he came on the scene Anderson was a Steyn type bowler, not quite as fast but regularly high 80s and capable of breaching 90mph when everything clicked plus a lot of swing. Because he had an idiosyncratic delivery where his head wasn't looking at the pitch, Cooley decided to remodel his action and we nearly lost him altogether. For a few years he was a glorified drinks waiter, following the England team, rarely playing and having his head filled with technical rubbish.

Good reminder mate, had forgotten a bit about Jimmy's early career struggles. You always wonder about how much impact these bowling coaches really have, and Cooley was a guy I thought was quite a bit overrated.

So I see England smashed the PMs XI the other night. First win on tour for a while :cheers

Allrounder to miss more ODI matches

Would have preferred M Marsh to be called up instead of Christian TBH

Shane Watson missing more ODIs isn't a big deal because he isn't in the best of form and a break might do him some good.

The replacement for Shane Watson is an interesting one. James Faulkner is the best replacement in my opinion but he is already in the team as a bowler, but he could be used as an all-rounder. The selectors have gone with a fairly safe option in Daniel Christian because of his form in the Big Bash League. Mitch Marsh has also preformed well in the Big Bash League and with him only being 22 this could of been a good chance to reintroduce him to the national scene. If Shane Watson and Nathan Coulter-Nile go out of the team and Mitchell Johnson and James Pattinson replace them Daniel Christian might not get a game in the team straight up.

The team I would go with:

1. David Warner
2. Aaron Finch
3. George Bailey (Bailey or Clarke bats at 3)
4. Michael Clarke
5. Glenn Maxwell
6. Brad Haddin.
7. James Faulkner (James Faulkner used as the all-rounder)
8. Mitchell Johnson
9. James Pattinson
10. Clint McKay
11. Xavier Doherty

Could be a bit of 'lets not pick him until x-y-z behaviour improves' happening for Mitch Marsh. Not that Christian is an angel either, but I'm guessing those off-field incidents are still talked about. Or...don't look past the political factors either. Picking Marsh after having his brother in the squad doesn't help the Scorchers BBL campaign much, while Darren Lehmann's old Heat would have kept Christian. Could have been seen as some favouritism.

I'll be interested to see Australia's balance. That team you suggested Spickery is certainly a good option, especially on a pitch that will offer a bit for spinners because you can play Doherty and Maxwell. Coulter-Nile's chances of playing would go up in that case too since he's a good lower order bat. But so are Johnson/Pattinson I guess... The other option is drop Doherty, keep Faulkner at #8 and rely on Maxwell and maybe Finch for the other 10 overs. Brisbane and Perth would be most likely for a team like that. Keeping Doherty, but dropping a fast bowler while keeping Faulkner at #8 would mean 20 overs of spin - not the Australian way...Or just play Christian at 7 and move everyone up a spot, that would work too. Would give Haddin the chance for a bat then, and it's important to see what he's got in the short form stuff.

Better from England, could just about break the 300 mark (EDIT : not quite).

Shows what happens when you get off to a decent start and someone makes a start count. 59/1 off 12 overs, although Root doesn't look as if he's ODI material at the moment, maybe a knock on from being dropped in the Tests.

Fell away a bit in the next six overs, 80/3 after 18 overs. But then Morgan found his range, with Bell then Bopara he carried England to 162/4 off 35 overs leaving a platform from which England could score 134 off the last 15 overs - and the score was more than doubled from 139/4 after 30 overs.

But England have left a window open again, Rankin and Jordan are inexperienced, Stokes not much more and that leaves Bresnan the only one of the four main bowlers with much experience. The aussies should fancy their chances, get off to a decent start and then just work out which of the 3-4 potential/actual weak links they can target and pick off

Oh and fair play to Buttler for a second consecutive good effort, coming in with 12 overs to go not the worst position to face, but we still needed runs and support for Morgan which he provided falling 10 overs later

Spickery are you a selector

Wow wow wow, what an innings by Faulkner, quickly making a name for himself for finishing. Would be tempted playing him in the top 7 and get another bowler.

Indeed, his potential is the real deal. Drop Bailey, bat Haddin @ 6 on current form. This way maybe we could let Watson bat more & more less, to see if it helps him score more consistently @ # 3.

Why drop Bailey anyway James Jimmy The Great Faulkner

What an unbelievable finish, amazing from Faulkner he definitely has something special about him to be able to win games like that when his team is pretty much done. It has to be said though what were England doing at the end there? I mean Stokes and Bresnan couldn't have bowled any worse, it was the exact place where Faulkner wanted it pretty much every ball. I just can't comprehend how bad some of these bowlers are bowling at the death lately.
