England in India - Oct to Jan 2012/13

what has MSD done that he's even remotely close to being dropped?

ok, you can debate the merits of his captaincy but his batting? even in tests, his weaker format, he was still better than tendulkar, sehwag and gambhir last year.

eXACTLY STINKY, MSD has been by far the standout keeper-batsman for 2012, he did better than the Sangakaras/Wades. His captaincy is questionable though but he is the only man who can lead India out of this rot, NO ONE CAN DROP MSD!

And comparing MSD with the likes of Karthik, Patel and Saha is the biggest joke ever.

I just don't see the need to complicate Buttler's game. Anyone at Somerset has seen him take apart every bowling attack in the country. The guy has ability and batting behind Morgan, I think we could have something special with those two. He's a decent keeper at County level and as I said, you can get away with that in the T20s, but just let the guy be a batsman, he's damn good at it.

I hear what you are saying. Keeping can affect players in their role as batsman. However its still an unknown, if he can combine both in odi's it would clearly add another dynamic to the odi team.

My thoughts on KP and Bell taking over from Kieswetter are the same as they always have been. Kieswetter wasn't allowed to take his time and score big runs (like he did during his first ton) he was expected to go out and score quickly. Suddenly though, Bell and KP are allowed to take their time and score at their own pace, yet Kieswetter got written off before he had that chance. Again, he's another batsman who's been scoring runs for fun domestically, he's good enough, sure he's had a few bad patches, but that's to be expected. He'll be back for me and he should not be written off at this stage. With Buttler and Baitstow not needing to 'keep to get in the side, Kieswetter is the best we have and that's not a bad thing, that's a good thing.

Sort of agree that it seems at times Kieswetter has sometimes seems unsure of his role, especially when he was openign in odi's since he is a superb talent. But fact is in sport sometimes the player needs to step up, especially when the competition is so tight with Buttler & Bairstown right on his toes.

The India series now is make of break for him.

Think Woakes is a good shout, but I honestly believe his batting is better than his bowling, so would bump him up to 7. With this team, Trego would have to bowl his 10 overs the majority of the time, unless you want to see KP or trotty getting smacked. Don't think Trego would be up to that against some of the better batsman around the world.

Cook
Bell
Pietersen
Trott
Morgan
Prior
Woakes
Broad
Swann
Finn
Anderson

I think this would be a side I would be looking towards playing at the world cup. With the two new balls rule now in place, I think that you want 4 proper opening bowlers to take advantage.

Others that I'd want around the squad in the coming years would be Buttler, Topley, Stokes, Billings, Meaker, Bairstow, Briggs, Roland-Jones, Hales and Ballance.

Ye nice team, especially the two new-balls point, but i would still have Trego as part of the back-up options.

Squad: MS Dhoni (capt.), Cheteshwar Pujara, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Ashok Dinda, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shami Ahmed, Amit Mishra

It is fantastic to see Pujara in there. I agree Rohit Sharma shouldn't be in there and would have loved Rayudu to be in the squad. But, still I am happy with the squad. We have got two genuine swing bowlers now in Kumar and Ahmed and these both do bowl quicker than Praveen. And, then we have Yadav who is unfit atm but, is the future leader of the attack. Ishant is coming back into his own as well. Bowling unit of Yadav, Aaron, Ishant, B Kumar, Ahmed looks fine with Dinda, Awana as backups. We need to use B Kumar and Ahmed cunningly though as Kumar didn't look too good on a track which wasn't helpful. Don't know anything about Ahmed though. It's good to see Mishra and not Chawla there. If we need a leggie, it has to be Mishra and not Chawla.

Agree to every of bit Gaurav's post. Pujara is one man who can hold one end and looking at the dismal performance of our batters against Pakistan, it is great move to add him to the squad. I'd love to see him bat at #3 with Kohli opening the innings or even Jadeja for that matter as the latter will get ample time to get settled and there won't be a hurry to score runs thick and fast which I think suits his game and he can be utilized in the best manner in that position. Kohli can bat at #4.

Its heartening to see the selectors giving chances to young players. One man that is not selected yet is Ishwar Pandey, a tall right arm pacer from MP who has lots of wickets at FC level. It won't be a bad idea to try him out too.

I like the fact that Cheteshwar has been selected. I do hope he is given a chance to play. Going by our recent team selections, I wont be surprised if he is left out.
Pujara can be a solid No.3 and I would hate to see him bat as an opener. Clearly the toss up will be between Pujara and Rahane. Ideally,a mid-order player could make way for him. [Rohit/RJ].

The rest of the squad. A bit disappointed that Manoj is still injured. Else he would have taken the place of Rohit.Rohit Sharma's place-highly debatable ,since the fella has been given a decent run in cricket. TBH, he would be better off playing for Mumbai and learning from the likes of SRT and Wasim Jaffer. Have no issues with the bowlers as they did put up a decent performance vs Pakistan.

The problem here is - Pujara, Rahane and Kohli, all of them should bat in the Top 3. Which leaves Gambhir out of the Top 3. Kohli hasn't shown that he can accelerate very easily.

So I think Gambhir should be dropped and we should open with Kohli and Rahane, with Pujara at No.3. Kohli should take responsibility of the opening slot. A certain Sachin Tendulkar took responsibility voluntarily of that spot against New Zealand, and he smashed 82 off 49 balls and the rest is history! But Pujara and Rahane should get their chances and should be allowed to settle down in the side. I am hopeful that we might find our replacements for Dravid, Tendulkar and Ganguly (in ODI's) with Pujara, Kohli and Rahane respectively.

What are the alternatives to Bresnan? Thought he was a weak-link in the last ODI series in India.

Broad/Swann pretty much. Former's playing only the last two one dayers, while the latter's been rested for the entire tour.

Right now, England are helpless and have no other go but to start Bresnan at #8. Don't at all rate him, but here's to hoping he proves me wrong, and justifies his rather hyped "all-rounder" tag.
