England in India - Oct to Jan 2012/13

I second that.

Oh, and another thing, if Gambhir doesn't get going in this series and Rahane does, I'd like to see Gambhir dropped and Mukund brought in.

Mukund ? Dhawan has been pushing his case for quite some time. But,as the case goes with Indian selections, any one can make the side. Mukund should ideally not have captained India A in NZL ,but still got the nod to so. Shikhar would be a better choice.

Losing is one thing, that personally, I can handle for a warm up match. As an England fan, the much more worrying aspect is that they keep on playing Samit Patel in the top order batting wise. :facepalm

I assume he is only batting up there because of illness and resting of players who would normally bat there. Presumably he'll go back down to no higher than 6. If he plays that is.

It's irrelevant who comes in, we just have to make sure Gambhir goes out, if he fails to make a mark that is.

I would definitely have Kohli, Rahane and Pujara for the top three spots. These 3 definitely have to bat there. I don't want them any lower because these three are innings builders and need to bat at the top. If Gambhir fails, Kohli should move in as opener. If he refuses it, Pujara should be tried. You don't really need specialist openers in ODI cricket. Ganguly and Tendulkar weren't specialist openers when they started opening in ODI cricket. Yet they are probably the most successful opening pair in ODI cricket.

I would never move Virat from No 3 now. He has been so successful there, why would you want to move him to open the inning? I would rather have Pujara as an opener with Rahane. I posted this team couple of pages back and I think it's the best team we can have for this series.

Rahane
Pujara
Kohli
Yuvraj
Dhoni
Raina
Jadeja
Ashwin
Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Ishant Sharma
Shami Ahmed

Well a lefty among the right-handers wouldn't be so bad...

Interesting thing is that the match was played at Delhi where one would expect the ball to do something given the weather. Especially from bowlers like Finn. Maybe that wasn't the case. It's great to see Dhawan scoring all these runs. He is one of my favorites and I've been waiting to see him get a long run for India. Hopefully, these performances push his case given how poor Sehwag/Gambhir have been. Rahane/Dhawan will make a solid opening pair, I am sure.

Feroz shah kotla? Those are dead pitches normally. Let me guess Finn and co bowled a bit short on that track?

I agree. I wouldn't read too much into losing a tour match, not a one day match especially with players coming to the country and that is a practice match, but I'd expect a bit more from some of the players.

Patel 4 & 3, 1/21 (3 overs) and 0/41 (7 overs)
Finn 0/42 & 0/47 (15 overs combined)
Woakes 0/40 & 0/45 (13 overs combined)

Having posted near 300 England should really have defended it, Meaker's 0/55 begging the question why we're again going in with only one specialist spinner in India, did we learn nothing from the Test series?!?!?

In neither innings was our 7-11 strong enough for ODIs :

43 : Woakes 3, Bresnan 22, Tredwell 0, Finn 15, Dernbach 3no
3 : Woakes 3no, Tredwell, Meaker, Finn, Dernbach

I also have to ask why relatively inexperienced players are picked for tours so often, and question if giving everyone a go in warm ups is the way to go?

Virat Kohli has been previously tried out as an opener in the tri-series in Zimbabwe[India under Raina]. I don't mind him opening and he has done so. Wait, I remember yet another instance- the tri series in SRL. Getting Virat to open is not a bad idea.

This though would come if GG screws up. What Gambhir needs is a break and I am surprised that he did no ask the BCCI to give him some rest. Agreed he has been failing, but he is still a good opener. Just needs to iron out some chinks in his technique-esp against the rising delivery.

Pujara is my man at No.3. Somehow,he reminds me so much of Rahul Dravid, really don't want him to move form that position.

Ajinkya 'Jinx' Rahane needs to get over the MSD jinx and must be tried out on a longer duration. I'd believe in the doctrine- I'd Rohit can get so many, so can I'.

He is going to be tried out for a longer duration, now that Sehwag has been disposed...

Fixed.

So I am predicting a 4-1 win for England!

Most likely would be a high scoring series.

During World CUp on Indian pitches, captains had tried to give very 1st over to spinners... why it is not happening now???

It would be surprising weapon to attack opening batsman... I would be really happy if Dhoni give 1st over to Ashwin against Cook & Bell :thumbs

And yes, I will stick with the same team as No Pujara tomorrow :cheers

Let's be honest, if Dhoni had much sense, he'd just bowl 50 overs of spin, because that's the best way to stop us from scoring.

Unless of course KP goes on a blitz.

Unchanged XI from the recently concluded Pakistan match, whatever, just win.
