England in India - Oct to Jan 2012/13

Is the BCCI punishing Ambati Rayudu for having chosen the ICL once upon a time? Then why did they give him an IPL chance? Rayudu can be a good makeshift keeping option when Dhoni gets injured. And Rayudu is 100x better than Rohit Sharma.

Sehwag should ideally be on the brink of having his entire career close to being OVER. He has been worser in tests, and when his hand-eye co-ordination doesn't work (it is bound to not work as you get old), he is a sitting duck waiting to be slaughtered, in any conditions. He might still have a few years of test career if he moves down the order. Hope Viru does not bow out like this.

EngXI 175 (36.0 ov, JW Dernbach 3*, MM Sharma 2/55) - Match over | Live Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo

LoL.

Anyway this'd be my XI

1. Cook*
2. Pietersen (6)
3. Bell
4. Morgan
5. Buttler
6. Root
7. Woakes (5)
8. Bresnan (3)
9. Tredwell (4)
10. Finn (1)
11. Meaker (2)

OUT: Briggs, Patel, Dernbach, Broad (plays only the final two ODIs), Kieswetter

Dont think root is an odi player to be honest. I suspect the selectors just threw him into the odi team mainly on the back of his debut test performance & the fact that bairstow ruled himself out of these odi's.

I would have called up james hildreth.

What are the alternatives to Bresnan? Thought he was a weak-link in the last ODI series in India.

Chris Woakes & Peter Trego for me.

Bresnan sadly since his elbow injury is in a sleep decline in his effectiveness sadly & is not the kind of all-rounder england thought he could be in tests & odi's after his impressive 2010/11 series vs india & australia.

I like the fact that Cheteshwar has been selected. I do hope he is given a chance to play. Going by our recent team selections, I wont be surprised if he is left out.
Pujara can be a solid No.3 and I would hate to see him bat as an opener. Clearly the toss up will be between Pujara and Rahane. Ideally,a mid-order player could make way for him. [Rohit/RJ].

Considering that we need a solid bat in the middler order and that Yuvraj plays a bit too aggressive for a #4 batsman, in my opinion, Kohli should be the best bet at #4. He is the one who can play both defensively and aggressively which makes him a very good #4. Pujara at #3 without a doubt and Gambhir (C'mon, he hasn't done so very bad) and Rahane to open.

Gauram Gambhir
Ajinkya Rahane/Ravindra Jadeja (Won't mind Jadeja opening. He if of no use in slog overs anyways. Its better to send him as an opener and try and get a steady start)
Cheteshwar Pujara
Virat Kohli
Yuvraj Singh
Mahendra Dhoni (I don't know why he is batting lower than Raina when he is technically superior than Suresh)
Suresh Raina
Ravichandran Ashwin
Bhuvaneshwar Kumar
Isshannt Sharma
Shami Ahmad

Bhuvi Kumar, for some reason, wasn't bowling as quick in the last two ODIs against Pakistan as he started off. I hope he gets back his pace 'cause the Britishers are certainly far better players of pace bowling.

Ideally, you would want the men in form to be out there. If for some apparent reason MSD decides to drop Gambhir, the batting line-up could look like this:

Virat
Rahane
Pujara
MSD
Yuvraj
Raina

That makes it 6 batsmen, with the option of playing RJ too. If Gambhir plays, then there is a slight selection headache. Though in that case, I'd consider a toss up between Yuvi and RJ.

What I really want to see is Amit Mishra in the bowling line up. Remember England are not that strong against leg-spin.

I would like to stick with the same team which was there in 3rd ODI against PAK, but with slight change in order ;)

Gambhir
Rahane
Raina
Virat
Yuvraj
Dhoni
Jadeja
Ashwin
Bhuvan
Ishant
Shami

I think Raina is feeling the big pressure at no. 6, he comes when India is 4-down, he has proved his worth at no. 3, so send him up the order, he will blast there :thumbs

Pujara has to play, no matter what. Give him time, and give him time to fail. India should play Yuvraj, Raina and Kohli as the fifth bowler.

Gambhir
Rahane
Pujara
Virat
Yuvraj
Dhoni
Raina
Ashwin/Mishra
Bhuvaneshwar
Dinda
Shami

No way! Pujara has to play, and Gambhir/Rahane/Pujara/Virat have to bat no lower than the Top 4. And you can't keep Yuvraj and Dhoni also too low down the order. There is no spot for Raina higher than No.6

There is two teams that prioritised test cricket. Currently they are ranked no.1 and 2 in test and ODI cricket. They also made sure that most of their batsman do not play in their T20 teams. Because T20 is going to mess up your test cricket. T20 is for clubbers. Where is all the old traditional style batsman who uses timing rather than power like VVS Laxman in India these days? You will note most of the clubbers avg around 30 to 40 in cricket where the guys who uses timing avg around 50. Go have a look.

Interesting thing is that the match was played at Delhi where one would expect the ball to do something given the weather. Especially from bowlers like Finn. Maybe that wasn't the case. It's great to see Dhawan scoring all these runs. He is one of my favorites and I've been waiting to see him get a long run for India. Hopefully, these performances push his case given how poor Sehwag/Gambhir have been. Rahane/Dhawan will make a solid opening pair, I am sure.
