The only reason England got more wickets than India is because India were trying to give the crowd some entertainment towards the end. If England were that confident of their greatness, they should have declared earlier and backed themselves to get 10 Indian wickets in a reasonable time frame. The truth is that they realized that the Indian batting collapse of the first innings is not a regular occurrence, and that they would rather have a drawn match with a slight chance of victory than a drawn match with a slight chance of a loss.
I think England have gained any psychological edge that is to be gained from this game, because they came in with a depleted side. They are also considered underdogs in India. But I don't think this match will have too large an effect on what follows in the series. This pitch was pretty slow and got slower. It didn't really offer anything for the spinners, at all.
Now, Panesar is an interesting prospect. I don't think he has been tested yet. It was obviously his debut match and he was trying to gain confidence by not giving away too many runs. The wickets he got were good, and definitely must have added to his confidence. However, I believe Panesar is lucky that England's pacemen removed Sehwag early on in both innings. An over or two of Sehwag vs. Panesar would have made a large difference in the performance of this young spinner in this match and the rest of the series.
In the next match, I think India are going to drop Kaif and bring Yuvraj in. I'd rather see Laxman dropped, but he is a specialist test player--and didn't really get a chance to prove himself in this game. Also, with Bhajji out, we will probably bring Munaf in, and not Chawla. I think we are saving Chawla for the third test--which'll probably be played in a dustbowl in the ****hede.
3 spinners + Irfan, similar to what we did against Australia last year.
