Laxman is a much better player of pace compared to Ganguly. England depend on their pace attack. Ganguly for the past couple of years has been getting out to short balls popping catches closing is eyes and trying to protect is face or mishooking. You rarely seen Laxman do that. Australia used to have the best pace attack and Laxman has a much better record against Australia than Ganguly.

England scored more runs, lost fewer wickets and picked more wickets than the home side. Also it was England who declared with seven wickets in hand, to try and get a result.

The way in which Dravid and Gambhir were batting in the morning clearly showed that India were playing for the draw. It was only after that became almost certain did they go for the flashy shots in that final session.

England have the edge imo.

Congratulations to England on a superb performance! I don't know why so many people just expected India to show up and win. I have always been saying that England has the best pace attack in the world. The Cricket is going to be competitive in this series. Cook and Panesar stepped up to the plate big time. Atherton expected Panesar to get whacked by Tendulkar, but Monty got Sachin and even Dravid out instead.

Great job by Wasim Jaffer and Kaif, he should open India's innings with Gambhir or Chopra. Sehwag Should Not Open and play at No.4 or 5. High time to bring Yuvraj and Kaif in for good. Thank You very much Ganguly and Laxman for your tremendous service to India and the game.

Indian Bowling in Tests, still needs work. The Spin Doctors Kumble & Harbhajan almost always need a Crumb Cake of a Pitch to run thru sides. India's Seam Team is a work-in-progress. Good batting by India, we expect them to play well, no surprises there.

I won't be surprised if England win at Mohali and India win at Bombay. Looking forward to great cricket though.

The only reason England got more wickets than India is because India were trying to give the crowd some entertainment towards the end. If England were that confident of their greatness, they should have declared earlier and backed themselves to get 10 Indian wickets in a reasonable time frame. The truth is that they realized that the Indian batting collapse of the first innings is not a regular occurrence, and that they would rather have a drawn match with a slight chance of victory than a drawn match with a slight chance of a loss.

I think England have gained any psychological edge that is to be gained from this game, because they came in with a depleted side. They are also considered underdogs in India. But I don't think this match will have too large an effect on what follows in the series. This pitch was pretty slow and got slower. It didn't really offer anything for the spinners, at all.

Now, Panesar is an interesting prospect. I don't think he has been tested yet. It was obviously his debut match and he was trying to gain confidence by not giving away too many runs. The wickets he got were good, and definitely must have added to his confidence. However, I believe Panesar is lucky that England's pacemen removed Sehwag early on in both innings. An over or two of Sehwag vs. Panesar would have made a large difference in the performance of this young spinner in this match and the rest of the series.

In the next match, I think India are going to drop Kaif and bring Yuvraj in. I'd rather see Laxman dropped, but he is a specialist test player--and didn't really get a chance to prove himself in this game. Also, with Bhajji out, we will probably bring Munaf in, and not Chawla. I think we are saving Chawla for the third test--which'll probably be played in a dustbowl in the ****hede. :) 3 spinners + Irfan, similar to what we did against Australia last year.

Can England bowl out India twice?I think it will be tough for them.

couldn't the same question be aimed at India's bowling attack? (690 runs for 13 wickets)

Mohali wicket will bring a result.

You don't drop catches everyday(5 on a single day).Compared to the English, the home team is better equipped to play in these conditions. On the Nagpur pitch the ball wasn't doing a lot.Mohali eventhough traditionally favouring the pacers does have a good record for the spinners in the recent years. So far England haven't been tested against spin on a turner of 4th or 5th day.Harbhajan has a good record on this ground.

Simple.

India are playing at home, where they always have been a force.
India are at full strength while England are rocked with injuries to several key players.
India have a world class spinner in Anil Kumble, and England usually struggle against spun.
The wickets in India usually assist the batsmen more, and India have a better batting lineup.

Hence the advantage is clearly with the home side. But thats just on paper. It is a completely different thing translating on-paper form to on-field performance. That is where England beat India in the first test.

I don't know about the next match but I feel we definitely have a good chance of winning the 3rd test. I agree with sohum... 3 spinners: Chawla, Bhajji and Kumble with I Pathan is going to rock the English line-up just like we did to the Aussie in 2004, I think. It's going to be difficult to score even 200 on that pitch I think.

Do you really read and understand what I am trying to say? Ganguly's form is definitely good at the moment. and his experience is surpassed only by two players in the team - dravid and tendulkar (in the batting!). he is definitely muvch more better when compared to VVS Laxman or Virender Sehwag.

Ganguly is better than Laxman and Sehwag... what did u smoke???.

How many innings to really remember(Please dont go counting his centuries) has Ganguly had in test cricket. The only ones I remember are on debut and that one in Australia) How many does Laxman and Sehwag does. The fact of the matter is that Ganguly was never a good Test player. If you remove his home record against newzealand and srilanka, the guy doesnt even average 35.

But I agree that he was a great ODI player. Majority of his great innings are in ODI cricket. He has hit quite a number of centuries and won matches for India. But in the end his slow batting( talking about recent times) has cost India some matches. So he doesnt deserve a place at all.

And you keep calling the selection committee names.... Do you realize why they are never gonna pick him again. Its because they never wanted to pick him for the Pakistan tour. They wanted to pick him if and only if he performed in the domestic competition. But that was not the case. The fact is Ganguly as usual played petty politics and forced the selectors to pick him. They did it but but not because of their own liking....

Once the political pressure weakened( I think it was just agrement between pawar and Ganguly for the tour to pakistan), they hated the guy for forcing that decision on them. So they decided not to pick him again. as he did not make anything that special on the tour to pak.

Instead you go on blaming chapell. Can you tell me why the selection committee would listen blindly and be prepared to come under a lot of flak just because the 'coach said so'. Lets face it, Chapell has no political lobby in India. Nobody will do such a thing because Chapell wanted it so. The coach has never had much of a say in team selection in India.

Hoggard looks cool on that. Is that for the man of the mach? Because in Paktel Cup Pakistan gave a bike but not as good looking as this one to the Man of the series. I think the tournament was in Pakistan 2004. Anyway, Hoggard really deserved the man of the match. He bowled really well!
