Story England in the 1980s

Excellent - don't forget to increase pace slider when batting for added realism ;)

Well I didn't up the pace slider but I upped batting difficulty from medium to hard. Played the first ODI of the West Indies Tour of England 1980... this is gonna be an interesting series!!

Huge difference in the timing of the length indicator, which obviously has the same effect as increased pace as you're seeing it later. I'm really looking forward to it

And my word the England team!! Imagine playing an ODI with a top 3 of Boycott, Willey and Tavare!!

Ah cannot wait. Playing against imo best team of all time so think justified in increasing batting difficulty etc. I am old enough to remember Willey and tavare :D

Come on England!!

Do you think you will do one of these of England in the 90's?

If I get to the end of the 80s yeah i'll certainly carry on. Actually the 90s was more my era as i was only born at the end of 1980 and only really remember from 87-onwards. (The mike gatting shakoor rana controversy is the first cricket thing I can properly remember and the 88 home series vs the windies the first series I have a proper memory of.)

Yeah i was born in 80 as well but didn't get into cricket until 90's. Would be fun to see how you get on with Atherton,Thorpe and 9 club standard cricketers against the might of 90's Australia!

As mentioned, up next for England was a home series vs the mighty West Indies - 2 ODIs followed by a 5-test series. (ODIs played as a custom 25 overs a side format)

In ODI 1 at Headingley, West Indies win the toss and bat first. A brilliant, brutal 75 from Gordon Greenidge leads the West Indies up to a commanding 167/9, with England grateful to 5-36 from Dilley to keep them from a monster score.

In reply, after an uncharacteristically aggressive 35 from Boycott England struggled to maintain momentum and lost regular wickets, relying on a 30 down the order from Dilley to get up to 144 all out, to give the West Indies a comfortable 23 run victory.

(I forgot to change kits and format so this is played with a white ball in the WSC kits with coloured pads. In reality it would have been red ball and standard whites.)

Can safely say that being the sad sack I am that was best seven minutes of DBC 17 I have ever seen or played in. Greenidge batted just like Greenidge did. Viv Richards certainly didn't ;)
As expected I enjoyed watching Windies bowl more. Boycott never batted like that against them :p. They often were unplayable as no limit on bouncers etc. Richards did his usual trick of taking wickets as batsman go after him as get some respite

Mate wait until I get to the first test! It's been epic so far.

Oh you tease :D

i'm into the evening session in day 3 in real time. i'll try and post reports and vids for the first 2 days later plus the 2nd ODI.

this test has shown me the genius and the tragedy of DBC17, which i'll expand on later.

Ok cool sounds intriguing, sounds like you are overall having fun which of course is the main thing

2nd ODI at Lords (May 30 1980)

England lose the toss and find themselves inserted on a tricky looking pitch, and manage the fairly staggering acheivement of losing their first 3 wickets without a run. From there, it's a semi-recovery to post 95 all out in 16.1 overs, keeper Bairstow top scoring with 25.

It never looked likely to be enough and so it proved, West Indies reaching the target for the loss of 4 wickets in just 14.3 overs, a fine unbeaten 35 from 28 ball by Viv Richards leading the Windies to a 6 wicket victory and a 2-0 clean sweep of the ODI series.
