England National football team thread

Well I obviously can't say either way, but he rarely does TV interviews, he keeps himself to himself, and he has had quite a few moments in his career where his performances just seem to drop off for no discernible reason. He also goes missing in most massive games, and always gives the impression he doesn't like pressure on him. Add to the fact he never shoots

Fact is, if he has suffered, than he will always suffer. It'll always be an issue, which is my point really

I've got a much more likely reason. He's a crap player.

So if there was any doubt that Rio omission wasn't due to "footballing reasons" that's gone now.

Yea we always knew that, but to be fair to Hodgson it was always an impossible situation to handle between Terry and Ferdinand, given how he was parachuted into the job at the last minute.

If it was Terry he had left out, we would have been hearing talk about people treating him as guilty over his accusation.

However the FA public relations and Hodgson hasn't helped the situation by giving the frivolous reason of "football reasons" for leaving Rio out.

But its very complicated and i'm not sure if their was anything decision they could have made that would enabled them to avoid criticism in this Terry/Ferdinand fiasco.

What did you make of Stevie G's performance vs Belgium? I've only heard good things but didn't get the chance to watch the match. If the things I'm hearing and reading are true then it augurs well for Liverpool next season with a 4-2-3-1 formation in mind. I don't think Gerrard has the energy or fitness to play as an attacking midfielder or in the hole if he wants to play a significant amount of games per season anymore. I always knew he could adapt to a slightly more disciplined role if asked to do so because he's a top class player but it's always good to get some confirmation.

so is defoe our of the euros?

this is beginning to get like Mr Burns' softball team in that episode of the simpsons.

Planning for World Cup 2014

Well it begins now. Key things Hodgson has to dow:

- Fight for a winter break to be implemented
- Stop playing 4-4-2
- Make sure Gerrard is their in the next world cup

Goal-keepers:

Well in Hart we have the best keeper since Seaman. Green, Ruddy and maybe Foster if he wants to play for England again will remain understudies.

Defense:

The Terry/Lescott partnership although it was solid, won't last until the 2014 world cup.

They are a bit too slow as a pairing and i reckon Gary Cahill has to come in. Terry presuming he isn't found guilty in that court case won't last until 2014 either, so it will interesting to see how much longer Hodgson uses him.

Although he will be 33 in 2014, Terry pace will be too much of a liability despite his excellent reading of the game by then. Ferdinand who is 33 now and although he has lost some pace is now depending on positioning to get him through games.

Johnson has improved a bit defensively at right-back no doubt. However he will do well to keep his position with Richards, Walker and Kelly around.

Would back Ash Cole to stay # 1 until 2014, even with Baines around.

Big two seasons for Michael Dawson and Chris Smalling.

Mid-field:

Along with Gerrard, the development of Wilshire and Cleverly will be important. They are next new Gerrard/Lampard of the next 10 years and they have the skills to bring to much needed flair to England's mid-field.

Carrick could also be a key part of helping the mid-field improve in the future if he stops acting like a baby and commits to England even if he isn't guaranteed a starting place. I don't see Cesc Fabregas complaining because he isn't guaranteed first team opportunities for Spain.

This is why i will always respect Beckham despite his celebrity stardom. He even after he was dropped after W Cup 2006, worked hard to make the team back and made tiring trips between his MLS team Galaxy and Serie A AC Milan to make the W Cup 2010 squad. Yet still would play for England today if the improbably happened and his services were seeked.

Phil Jones need evolve from being a jack of all trades and a master of some position in the next two years also. Or even prove to be good enough to play all three positions - that would give England great flexibility.

Jack Rodwell also needs to stay fit, could be a key player for 2014 also.

Strikers:

Carroll needs to build on end of season and EURO form be the man for Liverpool and Welbeck needs to keep building on his encouraging season for United.

Dependency on Rooney as the main goal-scoring threat needs to be decreased, as the case was with Michael Owen circa 2003.

Initially however once all are fit, i would like to see this team for the opening two world cup qualifiers in September vs Moldova and Ukraine.

----------------------------Hart-------------------------

Johnson/Richards/Walker--Terry------Cahill---------Cole

-----------Wilshire-------Gerrard------Cleverley-----------

Young-------------------Carroll/Welbeck------Roooney-----

Did you see my post in the Euros thread about what needs to be done? You and me, let's go run the FA. We'll win the World Cup by... 2040? :D

Ha ye i saw it. Gotta get Burton up and running soon, replicating what Germany did post their 2000 EURO disaster should not be that hard to do.

The Premier League has so much power, the FA needs to start demanding stuff in the interest of the national team.

I really can't continue to accept England have a quality league, but a national team that is always technically inferior to the top European and world teams technically in major tournaments.
