England National football team thread

you cannot even be remotely serious with the line up, right?

Essentially yea. What's up don't you think England have the players to a Juventus style 3-5-2 formation?

----------

not sure it's quite as rosey in other countries as you're painting, war.

here in scotland, rangers and celtic fans take their club over country every day of the week. (and we've been blighted by players constantly refusing to play for our national team, steven fletcher being a good example) in spain barcelona are the symbol of catalunya and many of their fans are catalan nationalists that don't even consider themselves spanish, same with Deportivo and celta vigo fans (galician) and of course, atletico bilbao fans (basques).

I'm sorta aware of what happens in Scotland. Which is why i didn't mention them in my example since they are not a football super-power.

Its funny how countries in football who sorta don't have success @ the international stage, sorta have issues with players at times not wanting to play for the national team.

I know of the Basque and Catalonia situation in Spain. However i'm not sure how much of an issue it had, on influencing Spanish players decisions to not play for their country during their underachieving years.

Recently before the EUROs i know a bit of bad blood between the real and barca camps had to be eased, by Casillas and Xavi talking to a few of the players.

It's nowhere near as simple an issue as saying petty tribalism is why nobody seems to care about england.

There are probably hundreds of contributing facts. I think a lot of people feel uneasy with patriotism , some sort of post-colonialist guilt makes some people feel uneasy about the line between patriotism and jingoism.

Certainly they are many contributing factors. As i said before, the years of poor performances have left fans disenchanted. But based on my years of going to premier league games in London and Manchester mainly - the tribalism is definitely one of the top reasons IMO.

I know about being @ Old Trafford amongst Liverpool fans (being a neutral) and hearing some of passionate vitriol being shouted at English players like Rooney etc. Those fans hate him - its way beyond friendly banter. This happens everywhere as we all know.

I'm not personally big with too much patriotism myself as a mixed race Englishman with strong Caribbean roots. Many traditional English things i don't like and subscribe to.

But i struggle to see why playing for England (players) and wanting to see England win a tournament over your premiership club win the league etc - wouldn't be the pinnacle for fans and players in this country.

I spend every day of the year supporting my club, but only 2 weeks every 2 years supporting my country. There's a much smaller number of fans of my club than there are my country so it is easier to feel connected to my club.

Gotta say this Shelvey fella looks the real deal, as I only really watch Chelsea matches I ain't really got a clue on the up coming talent,

Love his confidence and how he was demanding the ball,

actually, on second thoughts, I'm deleting that post.

the english national team has done about the same for the last 30 years. pointless reading too much into it.

Weird.

England will be the only country in the world which'll be doing that, if it does occur. Still its worth it, if British football improves.

Yea they probably don't have a choice, after facing up with the harsh realities that the premier league is owned by foreigners now.

If they can use the vasts funds gained from the league TV leagues to make managers play more English players - get it done.

Premier League considering taking winter break - Telegraph

Just hurry up and get this winter break implemented and stop and all crying about who needs to give up something. England is bloody important.

Otherwise wit all the rumours that England may 6 changes 2moro, i really hope one of those changes isn't Milner. Much rather Jonjo Shelvey get a look it.

This would be my preferred starting line-up although i suspect Hodgson may go a bit differently:

------------------------------Hart-----------------------------

Walker-------------Jagielka----------Cahill-----------------Cole

------------Gerrard----------Carrick-------Cleverley-------------

-----------------------------Rooney-----------------------------

---------------Welbeck--------------------Defoe-----------------

I'd be totally against a winter break. It's bad enough international breaks meaning a 2 week gap between league games, a month would be horrible.

Well obviously club football is played more than international football. But i don't understand why the amount of time you spend supporting your club, should influence a fans decision making process, as to how you support your country when they come together for major tournaments, qualifiers.

No my friend. The call for a winter is not to cater to fans in England who care more about their clubs more than the national team, who tend to get sick during the international break gaps.

It a case of implementing a simple league break that other successful Europe nations such as Spain, Germany, Italy have had for years. Which aids in giving your national players mainly a decent mental and physically break during a long season. Instead of slogging out for 10 non-stop months without any break as they do in the premiership.

Yes but as has been shown I and quite a lot of my compatriots couldn't give a toss about England's national side.

I wouldn't mind a break considering the injuries we get. No other reason though.

Don't give a crap about England, and surely most people are like that. I'm sure any change they make won't be received all that well.

I'm not English but would welcome a winter break and the scrapping of the Carling Cup. Would ultimately help Liverpool as well because less games would be played and hence less fatigue and injuries. Really, it's the best of both worlds. Go for it, I say.
