England National football team thread

Yeah but soldiers are brave, loyal and willing to die for their country, something our footballers could only dream of having in their DNA

Our footballers really should never be put in the same breath as that,

:lol no need to be so harsh on our national players mr lee, regardless of how frustrating they have been in 3 lions outfits.

Perhaps he'll be a Utd player by then. :)

Ye it seems so, looks like the nani replacement. I have been very pleased at least in recent transfer dealing as to how ferguson & few of the big clubs in england (except for city & chelsea) in recent premier league weekends have been buying & starting a vast amount of english players in their teams.

Liverpool had a good set vs norwich & the united vs spurs game was full of english players on view this weekend

Of course i have watched england long enough not to get carried away, but if all are come the next round of world cup qualifiers in march - hodgson has a lot of solid options to choose from.

Possible starting xi: (4-3-1-2)

--------------------------Hart---------------------

G Johnson------Smalling--------Ferdinand-----A Cole

---------Osman-------Carrick-----Wilshire----------

----------------------Gerrard----------------------

-------------Rooney-----------Defoe---------------

squad back-ups: Forster, Ruddy, Cahill, Richards, Baines, Cleverley, Lampard, Young, Lennon, Walcott, Welbeck, Sturridge

close outsiders: Caulkner, Dawson, Shawcross, Jones, Jaigelka, Walker, Gibbs, Kelly, Bertrand, Rose, Jenkinson, Parker, Henderson, Shelvey, Sterling, A Johnson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Milner, Lallana, J Cole, Zaha, Carroll

Certainly not a lack of talent anyway you look at it.

It is a lack of talent when you look at other top national teams;).

Zaha is your typical risky signing, he may be a gem but atm he is so damn overrated. May not be a big player for England in the future.

Well yea of course Spain, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Holland, France Belgium are obviously better in most area's in defense, mid-field, attack.

But as we see in the ongoing qualifiers England have struggled to put away mid-level teams such as poland & ukraine, which for the players at their disposal - that really shouldn't be case & is why people get irritated by England.

England have often struggled to put away 'smaller' teams, but the thing that's worrying me now is we no longer seem able to raise our game against the bigger teams: twice in a row now, we have been completely outplayed - by Germany and then Italy. Before the Germany game, you could've counted on England to put on a real good showing, before losing on penalties of course but now there is a worrying trend of us simply being completely and utterly found out by any team that's half decent.

Regarding Zaha, of course he's a risk. So was Bale - but by God could we have done with winning that bidding battle (Utd did put in a bid for him as far as I remember) - he's a ready made replacement for Giggs! Doesn't look like Palace will settle for a ?10m bid though.

And when you look at past England teams - Euro 96 for example. Names like Seaman, Neville, Adams, Southgate, Pearce, Anderton, Gascoigne, Ince, Shearer, Sheringham (apologies to any I've missed out). Or the team from 86 or 1990, with Lineker, Barnes, Waddle, Hoddle and so on. Both those teams had numerous match winners in them. Even 1998 - Owen, Scholes, Beckham etc, etc. The names we have now just don't have the same threat to them; remember that Scholes was widely regarded by some of the best midfielders around as one of the best on the planet?

Where are our matchwinners now? Rooney was supposed to be 'the Man', but his potential at International level has sadly not yet been fulfilled and even at club level - I don't know - he seems to find it hard to beat people now. Remember when he first burst on the scene? Portugal did not know what to do with him and it's not unfair to say that had he not broken his foot in the very same game, we could well have won that match and maybe even the whole tournament. After he went off, Portugal were far more comfortable.

Ye Zaha is a risk, dont have much of view on him really. Could be a good or a flop. But we all know in Ferguson history most of the time he gets it right when spotting young talent & given he is potentially giving a young talent Englishman this chance instead a young Spaniard, Brazilian etc is a encouraging at least in the mean time.

Rooney hasn't certainly lost that great pace of that he came on the scene with in the last season of two for sure. But in a way i don't think that's a bad thing, he looks more better this season playing role as the playmaker in the "hole" & at times playing deeper in mid-field sending some brilliant long passes that would make Scholes at his youthful peak proud.

His problem still is when he has a bad game, for a top player that he is, it is unusually bad compared to other top players who may have poor games.

That's a very good point: when he has a bad game, it's generally a real stinker! Perhaps his future does lie in midfield - freeing RvP and Hernandez/Welbeck up front. Speaking of whom (Welbeck), he's been immense for Utd over the past few games.

BBC Sport - Chelsea's Ashley Cole set for 100th international cap

Pretty much the best squad except the continued unfortunate exclusion of Ferdinand. Sir Roy isn't doing himself much favours with such a decision, especially when he keeps picking Lescott who doesn't even start for city anymore.

I'm presuming Caulkner is injured or has some sort of niggle, since he was on the bench for spurs vs norwich.

Presuming no one gets injured during the weekend clashes, i'm hoping this line-up ends up starting. 4-3-1-2:

Hart

johnson smalling cahill cole

gerrard carrick wishire

rooney

walcott defoe
