Story England: The New Breed! Kev Mead Called Up and Deputises as Skipper (ICC 06)

Shocking News out of Kent

Pinchy McPinch has been sacked today as Kent's vice captain and has been demoted to vice vice captain the new vice captain is Lee Payne there latest signing Lee Payne is a young pace bowler who has done well to this point and time in his career and is makeing his long awaited debut for England today The Kent Board have made this decision because they believe Payne can inspire the boys to win the County Championship and Twenty Over Cup and to gain Promotion in the Pro 40's though with being shocked with the decision Pinchy McPinch is happy that someone with the qualities such as Payne has the job as he said 'I could not handle the job and lack the skills required and since being the vice captain it has caused a decrease in my performance whist playing the game i love'

Hello, and thanks for joining me and the rest of the Channel 4 CricNews team. Im Simon Barrow and lets head straight down to see the coin toss once again!

The Sri Lankan captain won the toss and elected to bat, this looks to be a glorious batting track but if the England lads can keep the ball in good areas it could just have somthing in it for them, days 4 and 5 will see spinners have alot of turn, you mark my words here, i love this ground and as Mark said, it was the historic scene of Englands ashes win!

This is the team sheet,

Remember to be back here tonight at 9.30pm to see highlights from the days play and predictions from some of the commentary team, plus we will have an exclusive interview with Englands new coach Matthew Roberts, Join us then at 9.30, Channel 4.

The captain strikes early

Geraint Jones: Sri Lanka's makeshift opener Kumar Sangakkara was craftily disposed of by Usy Gee in this over. The Sri Lankan wicket-keeper was hit twice in teh precious over by debutant Lee Payne, and Gee bowled a beautiful in-swinger that got the thinnest of edges and England keeper Ahmad made no mistake.

Dean Jones: Well it was a beautiful delivery wasn't it Geraint? Sangakkara was clearly unsettled by Lee Payne, and Gee kept him on the backfoot, and England have the early breakthrough they wanted.

Tharanga Steadies the Ship

Mike Haysman: Ever since Sri Lanka lost Sangakkara early, Upal Tharanga has played some fantastic shots and has taken the Sri Lankan total beyond 50.

Geoffrey Boycott: Well England have bowled great this morning, but Tharanga has played superbly; His cover driving has been superb.
