Story Englands attempts to become the best (ICC2006 Ashes Edition)

And Plunkett took a 3-for in the 1st innings so he's not doing that bad with the ball.

So for the Victoria 3 day friendly game I change the side around (with the 7 players who didn't play in either test playing).

Key
Strauss
Shah
Bell
Collingwood
Prior
Read
Rashid
Plunkett
Mahmood
Anderson

We lost the toss on a decent batting track and were put in to field. Victoria got off to a good start with Arnberger hitting 122 the highest score of the innings. Mash was the second highest scorer with 71. There wasn't much else and the tail crumbled with Victoria finishing on 314. Anderson 3-41, Mahmood 3-69, Plunkett 1-33, Collingwood 3-53, Rashid bowled 27 overs for 119!

We got off to a good start losing our first wicket in the 100s. Key went for 57. Strauss supported him well and then supported Shah until he got himself out for 59. Shah and Bell made a good partnership before Bell fell for 44, then Shah followed shortly for 62. Prior fell for 17, bringing two new men to the crease. Collingwood and Read put on over 160 together before Read went for a brilliant 91, Rashid supported Colly for a 40 run partnership before he went for 14. Collingwood finally fell for 141. Plunkett (6) and Mahmood (14) didn't need too much to do before I declared on 536-9.

In Victoria's 2nd innings and with only 3 hours of Cricket to play there wasn't much in the game bar a slim chance of an England victory. Rashid bowled well on a turning pitch taking 3-29 to reduce Victoria to 125-5 at the end of the days and games play. Plunkett and Anderson getting the other wickets.

I've worked out that Fred might be back for the finals of the CB Series but that is unlikely.

A interesting game and with Collys performance he is almost certainly going to replace Freddie. Though it depends on conditions and pitch. Saj bowled well and had 13 near misses (ie, lbw appeals, dropped catches, play and misses, etc). Plunkett again didn't bowl well but he has offered me some runs at 8.

Onto the keeping position. Prior hasn't done alot with the bat in the tests and this game. Read made an impressive 91 and is of course reliable with the gloves. So do I change them?

I have to make 1 change, will I make any more?

Good to see Colly getting involved. Jimmy as well certainly staking his claims for a possible place ahead of Plunkers? Read and Prior is a tough one, if Priors been keeping well for you then he's probably the right choice, but if not Read will barely drop anything.

I will go with Read... He can be useful with bat! Rashid is shaping up well too! Btw, a very good read mate!

Thanks.

I can't see Anderson coming in for Plunkett due to having to play someone like Harmison at 8! Rashid didn't do anything with the ball in the first innings but had a great 2nd innings. Huge game and at Perth so I might play two spinners!

I'm off to play that test and should be updated again by half five.

Playing two spinners might be a gamble unless conditions favours! In Australia, i think England might utilise an extra spinner option ( 2nd spinner ) to something different..... May be Jimmy & Plunkett both playing!

But again all depends on the conditions! :)

So after judging pitch conditions and weighing up players form I decided to bring in Collingwood for the injured Flintoff and Read in for Prior.

We lost the toss yet again and as normal Australia decided to bat. We grab two early wickets of Hussey and Ponting but then Jaques (119) and Hayden (76) put on a big partnership. Australia didn't get much from any ot the other batsman making only 282 thanks to some very good bowling from Plunkett (5-64) and Panesar (4-68) Harmison took the other wicket.

We got off to a good start before Tres fell when 52 runs were on the board. He was the lowest scorer of the top six with 26. Cook went on to make a huge innings and carried his bat through for 153*! Bell made 48, KP 43, Strauss 38 and Collingwood 30. Read only made 4 but got out to a great catch by Ponting off of the bowling of Warne. Warne finished with figures of 6-112 and Lee had figures of 2-61. We ended up on 380, Plunkett didn't make many runs like all of 7-11.

With a 98 run lead we had a fantastic start with Hoggard and Harmison taking very early wickets to leave them 20-2. But then yet again Jaques (124) and Hayden (64) made good contributions, Langer made 37. Harmison was the pick of the bowlers with 4-54 and Collingwood with 3-30. Panesar got the other wicket. The last wicket to fall was McGrath who had to retire hurt after a Harmison bouncer!

Chasing 172 we got off to a good start with Trescothick and Strauss making a 40 run partnership before Strauss fell for 15. Tres and Cook (26) got us up to 120 before Cook fell. Tres went on to make 99 before getting out. We had a bit of a mini collapse with Tres, Bell (3) and Collingwood (golden duck) all falling quickly. KP (15*) and Read (7*) finished off the innings with Read hitting the winning runs. Gillespie 3-41 and Warne 2-45 gave me a bit of a fright.

2-1 up with 2 to play plus McGrath is injured but I don't know how long for.

The faith kept in Plunkett paid off, Collingwood took 3 very important wickets along with a decent first innings 30. Read didn't do much, didn't drop anything but made only 11 runs, though with the 2nd innings being a) a small target and b) having only 20 runs needed when he came out I can't judge him too much. He'll get another chance in the Boxing day test.

Not dropping anything's pretty key against that Aussie lineup, certainly helps to restrict them to as low a score as possible :)

Funny that Colly seems to be doing the job with the ball after Freddie was doing it with the bat! Nice to see Harmy taking revenge on the Aussies for injuring his best mate :p

Its a nice win but pity that KP didn't get anything big! Read must be proud to get the winning runs :D

also did Rashid play?

Nice story ss.

Are you using any patches?

Have you seen a variety of dismissals so far?

He's playing on ICC.

That's gonna be very, very difficult for Australia to regain the Ashes now. Definitely a good move to play Read in the Boxing Day test, if he hasn't dropped anything and he was not out in one innings then he deserves another chance.
